coincidental names, they are now the talk of the town. but they're talking weather on this friday, september 8th. from abc news, this is "world news now." a good morning to you all. we begin with a new track for hurricane irma, less than 600 miles from miami. >> maximum winds are 165 miles per hour, less than they've been, but irma is still a very powerful storm. hurricane force winds extend out as much as 75 miles from the center. overnight the eye of the hurricane is expected to continue west towards the bahamas. it now appears on a path for a direct hit on miami, late saturday night or early sunday. >> irma has just passed turks and caicos, pummeling the islands and leaving new worries about flooding from the very high storm surge. meanwhile, in florida, 1.2 million people are under evacuation orders. all public schools and colleges are closed

to the storm. >> and airlines are flying larger planes in to help get more people out. abc's marci gonzalez is there. >> reporter: hurricane irma cutting a catastrophic path through the caribbean. >> how are we going to survive after this? >> reporter: the monstrous category five storm devastating st. martin, damaging nearly everything on the tiny island of barbuda. >> the entire country has been decimated. >> reporter: and leaving about half of puerto rico without power. >> we're praying. the whole time. >> reporter: still hospitals there taking in some of the injured rescued from making islands. now florida preparing for what the governor warned will likely be a historic disaster. >> remember hurricane andrew is one of the worst storms in the history of florida. this storm is much worse. >> reporter: from the gulf to atlantic coast, more than 1 million people in the sunshine state ordered to evacuate. >> i'm i have scared. so i'm just trying to get as far north as

>> reporter: airports overcrowded, traffic stretching for miles. the wait for gas hours long with stations running out. >> pretty much full, but i want to top off just in case. >> reporter: more lines for ply wod and essentials. >> i still have yet to find water. >> reporter: many store shelves left empty in the rush to get ahead of this deadly storm. >> i'm ready. all you can do is be prepared am be ready for it. >> reporter: and to give families time to prepare, classes at every public school in the state are canceled for today. nick and diane? >> marci, we're hearing a lot about being prepared, but how difficult is that at this point, given empty shelves and those long, long, long lines? >> reporter: oh, nick, it is definitely an exercise in patience. my parents live a town away from here. my dad spent seven hours in line just to get plywood and the lines and traffic are only expected to get worse today. back to you.

patience and are still taking all the proper precautions. stay safe. and as we mentioned, the predicted path for irma has changed a little bit. >> let's get an update from justin povick. morning, justin. >> nick and diane. hurricane irma here has grown more in size. not a small hurricane, but a rather large. you can see the ominous look here, the well-defined eye. the movement continues here off to the west-northwest, very high wind speeds. this remains a category five and very, very damaging, devastating impacts tonight throughout the southeastern bahamas, but also notice where we have hurricane warnings over southern florida. we're talking about big impacts throughout the bahamas, into cuba as we go throughout the day, and notice the onset of the hurricane force winds here as we get to the evening hours on saturday. this makes its move a sure, southern florida, south or southwest of miami as a category four. we're concerned about a damaging storm surge
