for a second major hurricane in less than a month. start things off with doug hill on the latest where irma is and where she is moving. doug: the latest location is 190 miles northeast of cuba. 300 miles southeast of miami. top sustained winds 155 miles per hour. gusting to 190. it's slowed to 12 miles per hour. it's expected to have some interaction with the coast of cuba sometimes tomorrow. may temporarily weaken it a bit. but the forecasters think over the open warm waters it could reintensify to the category five status. later tomorrow afternoon and be a high end four or a low end five at the landfall. not sure where the landfall will be. it could hold off a bit. according to the western part of the line. if it stays out to shore a while longer. but the center area in southwest florida. it's not only the winds and the rain, it's the surge caused by the winds and the waves. that surge is profou

heads on shore during the day on sundays. hurricane warnings are up in effect. surge warnings up all over south florida. both sides of the coast and most of the state is going to wind up with hurricane conditions in the day on sunday. john? jonathan: thanks. dire warning from the florida governor to people still deciding if they will leave or not. you only have hours left to evacuate. the window is closing. if you are not on the road by midnight the governor says you will be stuck riding out the storm whether you want to or not. it's been a fury to prepare properties, boards are going up. shutters are put on. and people are deciding whether or not they are going to say. brad bell joining us live from delray beach. you have seen people hitting the road and other people wanting to ride it out. brad: that is right but there is a difference. we have seen the preparations farther in advance than in the past. locals telling us the same thing as well. it's still beautiful. winds picked up a little bit. there are people out enjoying

want to walk across here. the sun is difficult to deal with for the camera. across the way, you can see this restaurant. they have put sand bags up, plywood. they have a low wall that will hopefully keep the water out. we have others also seen people heading to the shelter. high school in del ray beach can handle 4200 people. what we saw today with the people flocking to that place. some of them bringing pillows and some bringing blankets and some bringing cots. we saw people come in, in wheelchairs including this woman who said she could not stay in her own home. >> i don't want to take the chance of accidentally getting stuck. and then having somebody rescue me in the storm. >> i have it shuttered up, boarded up. if the water comes, it comes. we have had the store for 38 years. hopefully another 38 more to come. brad: that gives you an idea of the two different mindsets we see here.

trapped going to the shelter, leaving the area and others who want to stay behind. they feel like they handle the storm fine. they have prepared for it and they have been through it before. at this point it's too late for people to hit the roads. so those that are here now are going to be here. we will be here with them as well. brad bell, abc7 news. back to you. jonathan: the difference is the woman who said she didn't want to be rescued in the storm. the governor made it clear anybody who says there will be no rescue. brad: people are aware of that. stern warning. you have to respect that lady because she said i'm not going to ask someone to do that. jonathan: all right. brad bell. be safe. thanks. michelle: many of those who are escaping irma are coming to our area. in fact the last scheduled flight out of miami took off three hours ago. air traffic at reagan national airport from that region has dwindled with the flights from miami, orlando and west palm beach canceled. ed collins and his wife were one of the few who got

>> bitter sweet. didn't want to be part of the devastation going on there. our daughter and her husband decided to hunker down there, they have our pet. our dog staying with them. hopefully everything will be okay. >> we have found a number of people who chose to drive from florida to our area. this week we have seen dozens of cars with the florida plates a it the rest stop off of i-59 in dale city. this will be the second major hurricane to strike the u.s. in less than a month. fema and the red cross are stretched thin after coordinating a response to harvey. jeff goldberg got in both organizations' command centers today and he continues our live team coverage with the details on how they are making it all work. jeff? jeff: yeah, fema says this is undeniably a difficult situation. they are definitely being stretched very thin but they can handle the two emergency disaster responses happening at once. more thn

workers are fanned out across the south dealing with the two hurricanes. while coordination efforts are happening here 24/7. inside fema national response coordination center the pace is quickening and the concern is growing as irma approaches florida. >> there is really no community in the country that is ready for that kind of disaster. it does not look very good. >> katie fox is the acting deputy administrator at fema where the federal workers and the volunteer groups are coordinating with the state and the local officials in florida and other southern states to determine where the resources will likely be needed after irma strikes. fox says in texas more than 600,000 people impacted by hurricane harvey are already receiving aid from fema. next up teams will fan out across florida to help victims of irma. >> we'll face challenges i'm sure with the impassable roads and infrastructure damaged and that sort of

four. the fluctuations are possible to continue. it won't weaken. jonathan: three, four and five are catastrophic. doug: five is catastrophic. a concern all over florida. josh knight is there and brad bell is there to give people here a feel for what it is like for us there. do it again, josh. josh: that is right, doug. a lot of people will prepare. that means we are closer to the stronger winds but of course we are at a better place from any storm surge. that is not an issue. what is an issue, show you behind the hotel. the lakes like this are really common all over parts of florida, especially south florida. we are expecting that chance to get 10 to 15 inches of rain. in a few areas

inches of rain. all of that has got to go somewhere. some of the small lakes could fill up quickly. even without the storm surge inland flooding is certainly a possibility. now a lot of people have been saying to us please be careful. be safe. i can't believe you are going down there. it might be more my mom. but we are staying at a hotel that is pretty much solid concrete. something we feel good about. feel safe about the building. as the storm does come through you can expect that safety is the number one priority. while we are getting you all the information out of south florida. brad: thanks, josh. give everybody if you're just joining us the top news of irma. still a category four. high-end category four storm. sustained winds 150 miles per hour. located 315 miles southeast of miami moving west at 12. later tonight it would have an interaction with the coast of cuba. it could disrupt it. forecasters will think it will get stronger. what will happen in the track as it makes

they expect it to be a five before landfall. if it makes landfall in southwest florida. close, four or five in that rain. travel up the state and weak on the the tropical storm status by the time it crosses the florida, georgia line and then an old fashioned rainstorm. but all across south florida is the big story for the next couple of days the wind, the rain, the inundation for the storm surge. power outages and the rest. there is no good end to the story anyway. the only thing that is shifted a bit here is it's now appearing that the biggest impacts are on the west coast, the southwest coast and not so much on the east coast. there will be the storm surge potential here. hurricane warnings, the biggest search that you think potential from jupiter and around to naples. this is the area with the most

that is where the highest concentration of the winds may be. it's subject to the storm surge. large portion. things will slowly improve at the storm slowly moves its way up florida. thundershowers of people on the west coast and millions on the east coast affected. here, sunshine. gorgeous string of days. 75 in washington now. go back to irma for a second. then off east is the hurricane jose. it has also 150 miles per hour winds. it may come close tomorrow for the northern islands and the antilles, barbuda, st. martin. under hurricane warnings and they could be hit again. overnight is clear. beyond that we have a great weekend here with the temperatures tomorrow for the susan g. komen race. only in the 50's to start. it
