right now at noon, irma is a tropical storm, but still delivering a punch to georgia. it is responsible for more than 30 deaths, seven in the caribbean, five in florida. chief meteorologist doug hill is here with a look at its path. doug: the storm is powerful. the spread. hundreds of miles wide, way out in the atlantic ocean. bands of showers and thunderstorms producing coastal tornadoes still. and give you the official information as far as the hurricane center briefing. justenter of the storm is in the tallahassee area and moving north-northwest about 70 miles or hour. to the north and east, we still have torrential rain. flooding a concern across georgia and parts of north carolina.

this high wind is producing tornadoes. the track will be a steady diminishing of intensity, but capablehuge cloud mass of producing a lot of rain. much of the rain is moving this way, not so much west. itself drawn toward the mid-atlantic friday into saturday morning. we could get some showers and thunderstorms at that point. but that is a long way down the road. for this day, we are at the northern edges of circulation. showsite radar clearly everything circulating through the atlantic and headed northwest. futurecast gives you an indication of high cloudiness moving across the area. wind coming east. this is a combination of high pressure to the north and circulation to the south. it is driving easterly wind. we get through tonight and

some of the showers over the northern fringes will get up to virginia and possibly even to our area here. also, a quick word on hurricane jose. it is the real deal. a looks like it will do little loop in the next four or five days, turn and come back. in the meantime, let's find out what is happening in tampa, florida. brad bell has a look at conditions there. >> at this hour in tampa, there is a very real sense that irma could have been a lot worse. i will start with the good news. the wind blew and blew mightily for a long time. we were out in it all night long. as you can see, the trees are still standing. the construction cranes are still standing. additional good news. take a look at the hillsborough river. yesterday, we were

to you. the water levels were way down. the concern was on the backside of the storm there would be a storm surge, the water rushing back and getting to flood level. ite, the water is high, but is not endangering this area in downtown tampa. that said, there are problems, a large number. almost 40% of customers are without power in this community. there are trees down, roads blocked, and there will be minor flooding. a concern is how much rain fell up river from here. some of the low-lying communities, especially later today, are going to be dealing with that flooding. the bottom line is, irma took a route that took it east of this city and as you can see, not even this sign blew down. tampa is going to be ok. it's a different story in

and what isn't actually true. this was the scene at a shoe store. looters. we saw people stealing sneakers. situation in miami and orlando, miami police tweeting this picture. they caught several of the looters are across the state. 32 people have been caught. finally, i want to touch on this. this was an unbelievable scene all day long. planes over the entire state of florida. compare that with the entire state. the airports are closed. at the earliest, most of the airports will likely begin operations tomorrow. still, airports have to get planes down through florida and they have to wait for ground crews and aircr

so far, no motive has been announced. we are still tracking tropical storm irma. the hurricane was downgraded this morning. it is still considered very dangerous. the death toll in florida is at least 32. are in these deaths caribbean, were thousands of americans are still trapped. >> our first look at the devastation in the u.s. virgin islands on the ground. u.s. coast guard team is doing an aide job, bringing everything from generators to food, water, clothing, and law enforcement personnel to help with the security situation. as we drove through the streets, utility poles and power lines down everywhere. trees stripped there. this once a lush landscape now looks like this. windows blown

adrianna: this is a special edition of abc 7 news -- tracking irma. we are tracking tropical storm irma, not only the damage she is claiming but also the damage she has left behind. to doug hill. doug: at 11:00 this morning, the national hurricane center in miami downgraded the storm to tropical storm status. wind at 65 miles per hour. the center of the circulation is very wide and moving north-northwest at 17 miles per hour. still strong gust at 75, but they are removed from the center. most along the coastline. thunderstorms moving in. some small, spin up tornadoes. the track looks like this in the first part, from tallahassee today to birmingham, alabama, east of memphis by wednesday. beyond that, the energy that is

, and possibly later in the week having an effect in our area. weigh on the fringes, sometime late tomorrow or wednesday, parts of our viewing area could see rain showers. it could be saturday morning before the remnants get close enough to give us pop-up showers and thunderstorms. we are not expecting damaging winds, flooding, anything like that. but we could see rain and showers. nothing of the cope we are seeing over part of the southeast -- scope we are seeing over part of the southeast. right now, georgia and south carolina getting the worst of the wind and the rain. when that storm blew through tampa, the wind and rain was fierce, but now that the storm has moved out, things are starting to dry out. brad bell with a look at how things are now.

those damaged by irma. >> we are inside the disaster operation coordination center of the american red cross in fairfax county. this is where they are keeping a watchful eye of -- on what remains of hurricane irma. the storm has left around 160,000 people in shelters and more than 4 million people without power. teams headingn be to florida. they are awaiting orders and then volunteers will get a deployment briefing before heading back. our emergency response crews will be moving supplies. as soon as it is safe, they will taking meals into the impacted community, going house by house. >> officials say they are prepared for a long-term operation in houston and florida.

adrianna: live pictures over miami right now. what would normally be a packed highway on monday at lunchtime is not packed at all. a lot of people not moving through the area. they had some pictures earlier of miami international airport. no aircraft at the airport. todayrport is closed for as well as likely tomorrow until crews can assess the damage. this area, not much flooding, of thisn, the point footage is to show you that there is not a lot of traffic on the roads. two major airports in florida are closed indefinitely.
