in horror as the shots were fired. police say it could have been worse had it not been for one man. and if you've never been to a festival, you know two things. security is tight, and the drinks are expensive and watered down. so one genius figured out he'd buck the system, marking out his spot before the festival began. how it turned out on this thursday, september 14. from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning to you all. we begin with a tragedy in the southflori florida nursing home. >> the storm knocked out air conditioning leaving several elderly patients in the sweltering facility even though there was a hospital feet away. the administrator of the nursing home said to be devas

tom llamas has more from hollywood, florida. >> reporter: from the air, a cruel scene, senior citizens still in their beds rushed to safety. doctors and nurses surrounding them. a life and death situation at this nursing home. the rehabilitation center and hollywood hills. the first sign of trouble, an emergency call about a heart attack. but it soon became clear it was much more serious. >> the facility called and said that incidents were kuoccurring. >> reporter: what came next, an all-out evacuation. >> the scene was chaotic. we had at least 115 patients that we were trying to evacuate and bring to safety. >> reporter: the scope of this tragedy heartbreaking. eight people dead, three at the nursing home and five more later at the hospital. the precise cause to be determined. several others in the er suffering from dehydration, respiratory conditions and heat exhaustion. the nursing home was runng

generators since hurricane irma hit. the lights on, but no air conditioning. this is the nursing home right here, and there's a large police presence. they've set up a command center over there. one of the first things we noticed when we got here is the heat. it's 90 degrees, but on our weather apps, the feels-like is 102 degrees. ellie peters came to visit mother mother. how hot did it feel? >> it felt like 110, 115 degrees in there. >> reporter: did you see the suffering? >> yes, i did, yes, i did. >> reporter: she says she called the power company several times and was told they would take care of it. what's more disturbing, the facility is yards away from one of the biggest medical facilities in the area. police are looking into whether some of the windows would not open. the health department had been in contact with the nursing home over the past three days and told them to call

had any reason to believe patients were at risk and still unclear, when did the first deaths occur? >> how did this happen? why weren't the patients transferred? >> well, you know, it's a sad state of affairs. we depend on those people in those facilities to care for our most vulnerable, elderly population. a >> reporter: and other nursing facilities now evacuating, after first responders are ordered to check every one in the area. we look into the history of this nursing home. health inspectors have cited it 11 times in the last three years. hollywood hills. the president is heading to florida today, stopping in naples and ft. myers. >> the president is steering clear of the hard-hit florida keys so he doesn't disrupt cleanup and recovery efforts. the u.s. death toll has now risen to at

millions still have no power. >> the military is flying into key west where residents remain isolated and with short supply of necessities. >> we got food and water so my son can eat. we should have evacuated. we thought we would be okay. but it's just -- i'm sorry. >> local officials are disputing fema's claim that 90% of homes were damaged, saying it's not as bad as it looks. seven people have died in that county that includes the keys, but it's not clear how many were storm-related deaths. conflicting reports are coming in from the white house and top democrats after a bipartisan dinner with president trump. chuck schumer and nancy pelosi announced they had reached a deal with the president to protect 800,000 illegal immigrants on the daca

during the incident and ordered him to surrender. and more than a dozen marines have been injured when an amphibious vehicle caught fire. eight were rushed to a burn center. the command is investigating the cause of the accident. and this will win for bizarre story. two babies born one day apart, delivered by the same people, outside the same burger king. it started on friday when a couple pulled up to this danville, new jersey burger king. realizing they would not make it to the hospital. >> they called 911. first respond oeers delivered tr new baby. >> the same responders got a call to the same parking lot. >> it was surreal. it doesn't happen every day here. it's something that a lot of people on this department have never experienced. >> they
