this morning on "world news now," conflicting reports are coming from the white house, and top democrats after a bipartisan dinner with president trump. we'll tell you what the two sides are saying. and from natural disaster to criminal investigation. eight patients dead at a nursing home after the stifling heat, and that number could rise. several more in critical condition this morning. and a troubling incident in new hampshire. >> a biracial boy's family is saying he was attacked by a group of teenagers and nearly hanged. the case under investigation. and sean spicer, live on late night. >> he sat down with jimmy kimmel who asked about melissa mccarthy's impression of him.

mockery. in "the skinny" on this thursday, september 14th. from abc news, this is "world news now." and we can say good morning to you, everybody. we're going to start with the white house, where there was a nice dinner that took place last night. there was probably ice cream, you know, dinner with the democrats and the president. both sides describing the talks in positive terms, but walking away with two different versions of what happened. >> the democrat leaders, chuck schumer and nancy pelosi say they reached an agreement to protect young immigrants, d.r.e.a.m.ers, excluding the wall. but the white house disputes that. earlier, abc's mary bruce asked the white house about the pivot to bipartisanship. >> the president has called chuck schu

recognize that he needs them. how does that work? what changed? >> i think it's less about him needing them but more as the president wanting to work with them and wanting to move this country forward. >> does he view schumer and pelosi as equal allies on the hill? >> this president has done more for bipartisanship in the last eight days than obama did in eight years. >> well, after the meeting, sarah sanders made it clear that the border wall was not off the table. tweeting, while daca and border security were both discussed, excluding the wall was certainly not agreed to. and an investigation is under way in hollywood, florida after eight senior citizens died in a nursing home left without air conditioning from irma. >> they were evacuated across the street. but they were already dead and five more died at the hospital. many are wondering why they weren't transferred earlier. the governor calls the situation unfathomable. as president trump heads to florida, search and rescue teams are going door to door in the keys looking for anyone who may

or may not have survived. some families who rode out the storm in the most devastated areas are lining up for food and water flown in by the military. utility crews are working round the clock to try to restore power and water. millions are still without electricity. and the storm is now being blamed for at least 30 deaths. one church leader in the u.s. virgin islands says the territory is still a destruction zone more than a week after irma hit. it could be several weeks before full water and power is restored and there's growing criticism about the response to the storm. erielle reshef has details. >> reporter: hurricane irma unleashing fury in the virgin islands. dealt a catastrophic blow. the damage so devastating, residents of st. john painfully deciding whether to rebuild. >> my home, my business, both my vehicles, everything is gone. >> reporter: days after the storm, locals describing

and crisis. >> our government did nothing. nothing. people coming out here with machetes, offering bullets, saying there's more for you. breaking into houses, hurting people. >> reporter: some federal assistance filtering in from fema in the form of food, water, tarps and toddler kits. but across st. john and st. thomas, frustration. >> making lines for two or three hours for water. they don't get nothing from the city. >> reporter: more than 2,000 american tourists, ferried out on cruise ships and flown out on military planes. >> when they see the u.s. flag, it's like we're coming home. >> reporter: while the u.s. citizens who live on the islands say they feel abandoned. >> our hearts are looking for something, even the government, to do something, something positive. >> reporter: the department of defense has deployed more than 10,000 personnel to the u.s. virgin islands and puerto rico. president trump is expected to visit the islands in the coming days. and three businesses in

during hurricane harvey. a hotel allegedly charged three times its regular room rate during the storm. two gas station ownership groups are also charged. one of them is charged with selling fuel for almost $10 a gallon. those businesses could face stiff fines if found guilty. three teenagers are hospitalized after a shooting at their high school killed a fellow classmate. police say that student may have tried to talk his fellow classmate out of it, moments before he opened fire in the hallway. the suspect is described with being obsessed with previous school shootings and was armed with a pistol and rifle. >> he entered the school. he proceeded to take his weapons out. at that point, he attempted to fire one weapon. it jammed. he went to his next weapon.

and a student walked up to him, engaged him. and that student was shot. that student did not survive. >> the three injured students are hospitalized in serious condition. the suspect is now in custody. police have not released a possible motive but are reportedly speculating that he may have been bullied. a new hampshire mother says her 8-year-old son was brutally attacked for being biracial. some teenagers targeted her son swinging the boy with a rope around his neck. it is being investigated as a possible hate crime. >> reporter: the boy's mother's furious that this ever happened to her son. and police didn't take it seriously until people in the town of clairemont rallied to support her child. >> the fact that my boy is biracial and the others are of white descent. >> reporter: police say all the

responsible for the wounds to this 8-year-old boy are all under the age of 14 and because they're minors authorities aren't sharing their names. her son was over at a friend's house down the street on august 28th, with three older boys started teasing him and calling him racial slurs. she says her son was set up, convinced to wrap the tire swing ropes around his neck and they pushed him off a table. >> they made comments about white pride. even after the fact that they had hung my son. >> reporter: his 11-year-old sister was there watching and screaming. his family says he swung back and forth three times before he was able to remove the neck from the ropes. >> reporter: she says when they interviewed her son, they did so in front of the other kids. steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. >> our thanks to steve, graphic images in fact. and the former executive famous for raising the price of

an aids drug by 5,000 percent is back in jail. martin shkreli is awaiting sentencing. a judge revoked his bail after prosecutors argued that his out of court behavior posed a danger. he offered his facebook followers $5,000 to grab a strand of hillary clinton's hair during her book tour. shkreli argued it was satire. a wildfire in washington state has grown to more than 53 square miles. more than 800 crews are battling the jolly mountain fire that is 15% contained. it was sparked by lightning on august 11th. still no damaged homes and no serious injuries. so we all know when you have a question about anything these days, you ask google. >> now google is out with the list of the most popular questions we've been asking the past 13 years. coming in at number five, how to draw like a picture. >> number four. >> hmm.

fire officials are investigating what sparked this fire at a chemical plant outside kansas city that makes cleaning supplies. workers at the plant were reportedly transporting a flammable liquid from an outside storage plant. all of the 60 workers got out safely with one worker suffering burns on his arm. and next to london with a security scare at the school where prince george just started attending. has some people panicked. >> one woman was taken into custody accused of breaking into the school. terry moran has more. >> reporter: it was such a heartwarming image, six days ago. prince william and prince george on the first day of school meeting the headmistress

and the presence pal -- principal so proud of his new royal charge. >> to provide a safe and secure, happy environment where he feels supported by a kind and loving community. >> reporter: but now the arrest of a woman in her 40s who gained unlawful access to the school raising questions. prince george was apparently not present when the incident occurred. he goes only in the morning. police not releasing the intruder's name but the school's policies are under review. days before the school opened this video was posted by a local residence showing how she could walk into the school at night. the doors wide open. the woman intruder remains in custody. her motive unclear, and prince george is expected to return here to school in the morning. terry moran, abc news, london. >> there you have it. hopefully, they get it all squared away.
