>> the prime minister of that island gave a terrifying account on facebook. the roof torn off his own home, at one point he posted this ominous message, rough, rough, rough. >> we saw these images of maria's ferocity on martinique. >> moving north, the u.s. virgin hin islands are preparing for its arrival. as much as 20 inches of rain could pound the island chain. >> maria is expected to arrive in puerto rico on wednesday, two weeks after hurricane irma killed at least three people there. >> and on the east coast of the united states, millions of americans are bracing for the effects of hurricane jose. >> right now it's category one, and its effects are felt in massachusetts, including those hit by hurricane sandy years ago. >> reporter: along the east coast, jose bringing angry surf and

>> i would stay out of the water today. the outgoing tide can suck you right out. >> reporter: the center of jose already offshore, already flooding roads in the outer banks. heavy equipment being used to build protective dunes. jose could bring winds topping 50 miles per hour and waves up to 15 feet to areas that were ravaged by superstorm sandy in 2012. >> we were concerned yesterday with just people walking along the shore line, be being hit bit shore break at high tide. >> reporter: many beaches banning swimming and surfing all together. >> you never know what kind of surprises are in store. we're going to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. >> reporter: another concern, beach erosion. the mayor here says this community and many others are in desperate need of more sand in torna order to protect homes and businesses. >> and hurricane maria is smaller than jose

potential for damage. >> the next few hours can be devastating for puerto rico. >> what we have now is a category five hurricane and maria. real quick note. maria was a category three and jumped from a three to a five, literally, within one cycle of information and we're expecting it to hit puerto rico as a category four at the very least. very strong winds accelerating beyond 156 miles per hour. so, as a category five, it will be downgraded to a category four as it moves across puerto rico. we're expecting a direct hit of puerto rico. we're expecting strong seas and gusty winds as a result of jose continuing to move to the north and will stay in the vicinity for the next few days. kendis, diane? >> we'll keep an eye on maria and jose. but next to

angry protests breaking out on the campus of georgia tech university. >> a police car was set on fire and two officers suffered minor injuries when a few dozen protesters marched to the school's police department. three were arrested. the violence followed a peaceful demonstration over the shooting death of scout schultz. that happened late saturday night. police say they opened fire when schultz refused to put down a knife and kept advancing on officers. a family attorney says schultz was having a break down and was suicidal at the time he was killed. and in st. louis a large group of protesters gathered outside a downtown jail demanding other dem stratders arrested on sunday night be released. there have been four straight nights of protests after the acquittal of a former police officer who shot and killed a black driver after a car chase. no word of arrests tonight. president trump is hours agr away from addressing the united nations general
