finish. and we do say good morning. we'll start with breaking news and the mon story storm, hurricane maria just hours from striking millions in puerto rico and the u.s. virgin islands. >> hurricane maria made landfall last night in dominica with sustained winds of 160 miles per hour. >> this new video from that island where the prime minister says the storm has caused widespread devastation. in a facebook post during the storm he summed it up with three cryptic words, rough, rough, rough. >> meanwhile, jose is moving just off the east coast of the u.s. and we are tracking both storms for you. overnight hurricane maria started its destructive path through the eastern caribbean. the powerful storm made landfall

there is widespread deaf staying and the mayor is writing on facebook, my roof is gone. i am at the complete mercy of the hurricane. house is flooding. then 20 mens later, i have been rescued. in puerto rico, people are preparing for the worst. the area could get a direct hit. just a week after irma brushed the island with 70-mile-per-hour winds. abc's rob marciano is in san juan. >> the last time we had a storm remotely of this strength was back in 1989. hewlett go, that storm did over a billion dollars in damage, 12 people died. maria is going to be a lot, lot stronger. >> reporter: along the eastern seaboard it is jose people are watching closely. it is just off the coast and kicking off surf from the outer banks to massachusetts. on the jersey shore, people are already seeing fast rising waters during high tide. >> my husband and my son just walked off the dock and it's -- the water is way up. it's just amazing how fast the tide came in. >> so what can

maria and jose in the next few hours? >> accuweather's paul williams takes us through the forecast. paul. >> good morning. we now have a new elevated threat with maria. now a category 5 hurricane expected to push across puerto rico as a category 4 and then downgraded to a 4 after that then moving to become a 3 as she moves into portions of the bahamas. now, as you take a look at that track direct hit of puerto rico expecting it to the north of hispaniola and jose, jose still threatening the east coast with heavy sea, return surf, coastal flooding, strong rip currents and gusty winds. i'm meteorologist paul williams. >> thanks. we have breaking news of a small earthquake in southern california. >> the magnitude 3.6 quake struck los angeles just before midnight local time but was centered near westwood and felt across l.a.'s west side and the san fernando valley. people throughout the area reported feeling strong shaking and many tweeting what they felt. no immediate reports of major

also new overnight violent scenes from the campus of georgia tech university in atlanta. >> at least three people were arrested after allegedly setting a cop car on fire. now, this was after a peaceful demonstration over the police shooting death of a 21-year-old student late saturday night. police say they opened fire when scout schultz kept advancing on officers while carrying a knife. a family attorney says schultz was suicidal and having a breakdown when he was killed. a large crowd gathered outside a jail in downtown st. louis demanding the release of demonstrate he arrested sunday but the fourth straight night of protests passed without violence. the demonstrations stem from friday's acquittal of a white former officer who shot and killed a black driver after a car chase. well, president trump will get a lot of attention as he addresses the united nations general assembly for the first time. >> the president is expected to urge world leaders to turn up the pressure on north korea and curb its rapidly advancing nuclear program.

>> reporter: president trump front and center at the united nations. set to deliver his first major speech to the world. the president previewed his message monday promising to make the united nations great. >> in recent years the united nations has not reached its full potential because of bureaucracy and mismanagement. >> reporter: in his first speech to the u.n. general assembly senior administration officials say the president will call out iran, north korea and venezuela by name for their threatening behavior. no issue is dominating more than north korea as the u.s. rallies support for tougher action against the regime. >> president do you have any comments about north korea? >> this will be a great week. we look forward to it. as far as north korea is concerned i think that most of you know how i feel. >> reporter: also in question, the fate of the iran nuclear deal negotiated by president obama. >> mr. president, do you plan to stay in the iranian nuclear

>> reporter: in a lighter moment as he met with the president of france, the commander in chief said he wants a grand military parade similar to the one he saw in paris on ba steel day. >> we may do something like that on july 4th in washington down pennsylvania avenue. >> reporter: when president trump takes the podium many u.s. allies will be seated in that hall but so will those adversary he's calling out by name. in fact, north korea's top diplomat has a front row seat for the president's speech. kendis and diane, we'll have to watch what that body language is like later this morning. >> we'll be able to. abc news will cover it live. thanks, arlette. special counsel robert mueller's team has threatened to indict paul manafort, president trump's former campaign chairman as the investigation continues into the russian election meddling and possible collusion sources tell "the new york times" that the warning was issued after federal agents raided manafort's home in july. legal experts say mueller is using shock and awe tactics to

telling the truth. and the "times" reporting the president's oldest son has given up his secret service protection. the paper reports donald trump jr. decided to drop his round the clock detail because he wanted more privacy. the change reportedly went into effect last week. but it's not clear if the decision applies to his wife and five children. now, for a look at your weather. it's beginning to look a lot like winter on mountainhood in oregon. snow in september when it's technically still summer. warm moisture headed to the northwest with more snow likely in the higher elevations. down below in portland the high temperature will only be 63, the same in salt lake city. albuquerque and kansas city will hit 87 but 8 will be the high in memphis and new orleans. new york will be ten degrees cooler.

neither has been charged as yet. the 18-year-old is a refugee from iraq. the 21-year-old, we're told from syria. police have been given a few extra days to question the pair. they are also searching the foster home where the two had lived. 30 people were injured in friday's attack but appears the device did not fully detonate. and two of the four boston college students attacked in france this past weekend are asking for prayers for their attacker. the women were sprayed with acid at the marseilles train station in the south of france. now french officials say the 41-year-old attacker suffers from mental illness and it was not a terror attack. the two students who posted on facebook say they plan to continue their studies abroad. jeffrey the giraffe may be out of work than to online shopping. yes, it's true. toys "r" us filed for bankruptcy late last night. just as the toy industry is gearing up for the holiday shopping season. toys "r" us is the larger

employees. the company reportedly expects most of its stores will be open for the holidays. and equifax reportedly suffered a security breach in march two months before the enormous breach that could affect as many as 143 million americans. the credit reporting agency says the march breach was not related to the bigger hack that's already been reported on. equifax has hired a security firm to investigate both incidents. well, iphone users will be getting a notification today that it's time to download the new ios 11. now, reviewers who have been using a beta version of apple's new operating system say it'll have a new control center and that siri will sound more natural and will be a little smarter. >> oh, really. >> yeah. i like siri the way she's. >> siri is pretty sassy. i don't know if i can handle a smarter siri. when we come back a tour bus plows into another bus. hear what investigators believe caused the

a seizure and it worked. >> so i started like slumped over to the left and started shaking. and people started to notice. and they were like, are you okay? are you okay? i was really scared. probably maybe the most scared i've ever been. >> police released this picture of who they think the suspect is. she has not been caught but investigators do believe the gun threat was probably a bluff. dragland says she may have come up with that idea, she says, she's not sure, but she may have seen it on an episode of "law & order." turning now to a deadly crash caught on camera in new york city. just as city bus makes a right turn a charter bus comes barreling through slamming into it. three people killed including the charter bus driver who used to drive for the city before he was fired. investigators believe speed was a factor. the buses collided with such force it completely destroyed a storefront. >>

fire that turns out could have been much worse. two boys made sure all the residents knew they had to evacuate. despite the smoke 10-year-old freddie king and 11-year-old r.j. stockton knocked on every single door. >> wow. >> like you said we were coming back from the park and we saw the fire and i thought we should go in and tell everybody to get out. >> first we saw the smoke. it didn't get this there first then we saw the fire then we was all yelling and saying, get out, get out. >> two heroes. they say they're glad everyone made it out safe. >> good for them, 10 and 11 years old, impressive. a football victory celebration almost two years in the making. it happened after austin peay state university out of tennessee wrapped up its first win in nearly two years. >> yep, this wasn't a championship or a playoff game. just a regular game but the victory was enough for fans to bring down both goalposts on saturday night. at least it was a big victory,

♪ it's time for your tuesday "pulse." we'll start with new details emerging leading up to sean spicer's surprise emmy appearance. >> it was a top secret mission. spicer tells "the new york times" that he wore a disguise as he traveled from washington to l.a. and he wouldn't say what that disguise was but a friend says it may have included fake facial hair. >> spicer said he did not give the president a heads-up about the skit which poked fun of himself and that, of course, now infamous press conference where he exaggerated the size of the inauguration crowd. you know, there were so many

a-list stars that were at the post-emmy parties. you know who was the number one guy? >> sean spicer? >> sean spicer. he actually couldn't finish his meal at the governors ball because people kept coming up with him and tooking selfies with him. >> who knew sean spicer would be the biggest hit at the emmys. a woman who resorted to extreme measures to finish a really fast marathon. so, there she is on the ground. barrel rolling the last few yards to the finish line. >> the 30-year-old woman went down and tried to crawl across the line but that apparently was too pain full, well, because of the gravel. so she just rolled in and even with that she still finished in just over 3:34. that, by the way, was good enough to qualify for the boston marathon which was her goal. >> okay. >> way to make her feel like a slacker. >> same approach at the boston marathon. worked out well. >> finish with two hours time this time. a scottish

a major announcement from a longtime toy retailer. "toys r us" has filed for bankruptcy. analysts say the retailer is almost 5 billion dollars in debt. the company has approximately

and "babies r us" stores around the world. a spokesperson says those stores will still operate as normal. and he added that this bankruptcy will ensure that the "toys r us" brand lives on for many generations. developing now neighbors demanding police take action to save lives on a dangerus stretch of road. triple a' says the prince george's county part of 210 is one of the deadliest roads in the d-c area.. over the last ten years about 6 people a year have died on that section of indian head highway. last night-- dozens of fort washington residents asked police to take action. they say drivers are going too fast, and are not focusing on the road. police say last police say last monday they pulled over 49 cars in 7 hours on that roadway-- most of them for speeding. organizers of the meeting called on more police enforcement and higher fines for traffic violations.

happening now - police are searching for the person who attacked a yoga instructor on a popular trail in montgomery county! the victim contacted police from the hospital - saying he was attacked last tuesday around midnight on the c-and-o canal towpath near glen echo. we don't have a description of the person who did it. we will stay on this story - and bring you new information as soon as it's avaiable. in california-- house minority leader nancy pelosi had some unexpected guests during a press conference about "dreamers". take a look. this is in san francisco. the protesters identified themselves as "undocumented youth." they hijacked the event to criticize the dream act for not doing anything to protect their parents. they also called for an end to deportations. pelosi tried regaining control several times- and was finally forced to leave the room without finishing the conference.

with a consumer alert now... new details about that massive breach impacting the equifax credit monitoring company. authorities are investigating whether three top company officials violated insider trading laws. according to bloomberg- the probe deals with the officials selling off company stock before the massive cyber breach went public. equifax said they didn't know about the hack at the time. that hack - impacted more than 140 million americans. it's xx and we're just getting started. breaking overnight-- hurricane maria downgraded-- after making landfall just hours ago into the caribbean. our stormwatch weather team is tracking it's path, as the powerful storm heads towards puerto rico.
