earthquake. right now the focus is on hunting for survivors in the rubble. this is clearly the wrong video here. but this is back breaking work. they are digging into what is left of schools. you can see not much there. but in that rubble there is a little girl trapped inside. that as we learn at this hour at least 225 people are now confirmed dead. thousands more have no home left with hundreds of thousands without power and afraid of what could come next. >> i still don't feel safe. michelle: in a mexican state alone 44 buildings collapsed. we are monitoring rescue efforts and we will bring you updates about what happened. alison: virginia elite tars one team is standing by now to help those who rescued in mexico. that is despite all the images taken in the past week of the task force one helping victims of

northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg is the only reporter with task force one tonight. they have spent all day preparing to be ready to go if they are needed. jeff: they were ready and they wanted to go. seven members of the team were told the fly to mexico but in the last hour and a half they were told to stand down. federal government is sending a medium size team from los angeles down to mexico. probably in large part because so many members of the bigger team in virginia are already deployed elsewhere. the images of the destruction out of mexico leave even experienced first responders worrying about the impact. >> it's heart breaking. it looks like there is a lot of damage, a lot of life lost. >> members of the virginia task force one were set to travel to mexico to assist with earthquake relief efforts. but got called off at the last minute. so last month have been extremely busy for the fairfax

rescue teams. members responded to texas following hurricane harvey. then the u.s. virgin islands after hurricane irma and now puerto rico for hurricane maria. 80 members of the team rode out the storm today in san juan. >> they are doing great. they are anxious to get to work. they are wet. >> assistant chief chuck ryan says the team is gathering the marching orders from fema. ready to conduct whatever search and rescue efforts are needed, wherever they are needed. >> the team is tired but excited. this is what we train to do. this is why people join the team. this is a competitive process. we are excited to be where we are. we really are. jeff: no question they are ready to go at all times. last year, the team was sent to haiti for the aftermath of hurricane matthew where they saw incredible and sad property destruction. many of the members we spok

to say they fear the situation in mexico could be similar. live in chantilly, jeff goldberg, abc7 news. michelle: thank you. now to the hurricane that was keeping us all on our toes. hurricane maria, which is leaving devastation in the path across puerto rico. maria is the most powerful storm to strike the island in 90 years. the territory's governor says the island is deavor stated with power knocked out for pretty much everyone there. >> we have not experienced the event of the magnitude in modern history. >> at least nine people have been killed in the storm. puerto rico has 500 shelters open across the island. alison: massachusetts is bracing for tropical storm jose as the storm churns north. there are concerns now on cape cod, nantucket, martha's vineyard of severe flooding.

banks. they have all taken a beating from this. host and maria keeping the stormwatch7 weather team busy. i'm with josh knight now. josh, i know you have to keep a close eye on maria to see where it goes next. josh: we have between the two of them, jose barely wants to move at all and maria is more than likely going to follow a similar path. bringing the storm close to the coastline as well. so one after another really creating the erosion along a lot of the beaches. talk about the latest with maria. we now have a category two storm. but it's right on the edge of still being category three. now that it is back over water more than likely we will see strengthening again. so here we are with winds of 110 miles per hour gusting up to 130. as it does, work its way past the dominican republic and watching it go back to category three storm. major hurricane with the winds of 115 and then 120. it does look like it will stay east of the majority of the bahamas going close

but what we will have to watch is where it goes after that. you have to look at the hole cone to put it close to outer banks. keeping an eye on that storm. it will want to follow the same path that jose did. jose creates that path of the least resistance for the storm to follow. speaking of jose. 70 miles per hour winds now. again while we are cloud free bringing a lot of the wet weather to the new england coast. look what happens. it goes east and it starts to drift back farther west. that can impact our weather early next week. we take a closer look at that in ten minutes. alison: we will see you then. look at this. this here is a preschool roof that collapsed in the middle of the school day. as a strong storm whipped across brentwood, tennessee. we are told the teachers managed to get all 100 students out unharmed. a building next door took them all in until the storm passed. michelle: amazing work. update now on

investigation in to a sexual assault in college park. a woman says a man broke into her home on guilford road early saturday morning. tonight, more people are coming forward saying they believe the same man entered their home. near the university of maryland campus. police say over the past two weeks two women reported a man inside their home or looking in their windows. another homeowner believes they stole two computers and an x-box. they have not made any arrest. alison: more than $500 million is what the pentagon says it would cost to repair and modernize the two navy destroyers. they say it would cost $600 million to make the uss fitzgerald and the john s. mccain sea worthy again. the ships were damaged in separate collisions that claim lives of 17 sailors. the cost of a new destroyer would be nearly $2 billion. michelle: the longest serving director of the

michelle: the driver forgot to put down the truck's bed and slammed in the overpass. no one was hurt and it was back open for the morning rush. alison: look at this. the minnesota state patrol spotted a giant panda riding a motorcycle down the interstate. the first time he was spotted he was weaving through traffic and riding with no hands. he got away from the police. so the trooper saw him a second time. they pulled him over and confiscatedded the panda head and ticketed him for reckless driving and he told him he was trying to make videos that would go viral. of course. michelle: giving pandas a bad rap. people who

pandas and other animals at the national zoo know parking can be a hassle. now there is a plan to add a parking deck. mike carter-conneen is live at the zoo with the plan and the response that it is getting so far. mike: some cannot wait for parking. with 888 spaces across all the zoo surface lock they could use more parking according to some. 100 days out of year the lots reach capacity by midday. this means many search for parking in surrounding neighborhood, frustrating the nearby residents. the zoo added plans for more than 1,000 spaces. that would replace lot "c," the biggest lot. but the critics point out
