this morning on "world news now." the search for earthquake survivors is getting desperate. rescuers in mexico are jumping on any signs of life underneath the rubble as questions surface over the search for a missing schoolgirl who turned out not to exist. and we're getting new reports from puerto rico after hurricane maria tore through, leaving the island without electricity and very vulnerable now that food, fuel and supplies are running low. we'll keep an eye on where the storm is heading next. and new this half hour, more violent confrontations as people protest the turkish president here in the u.s. >> look at this. a man can be seen on video, getting punched and slammed as security rushes him away.

lines believed to have caused that explosion there. >> and a huge chandelier in a government building swayed and lost power as that quake hit, a magnitude 7.1. abc's carlos grande is in mexico city. >> reporter: days after a 7.1 earthquake rocked mexico city, many buildings here reduced to piles of debris. rescuers continue to pull survivors from the rubble. they pulled this woman out of a ceiling, her legs emerged first, then the rest of her body. more than 50 have been rescued so far. but for anxious family members desperate for news of missing loved ones, the wait has been agonizing. this woman saying i think that is what kills us the most. the desperation of not knowing. for days, searchers have focussed their attention on a ruined elementary school, painstakingly making their way through the rubble hoping to find anyone trapped inside. they signal for silence, listening tor signs of life. for some time believing a 12 year old girl was alive under that debris.

girl. all students had been accounted for, though 19 childrens and six teachers lost their lives there. thousands have been injured and the death toll now more than 270. rescue teams, first responders and thousands of volunteers doing all they can. >> we need to feel so good after 38 hours, continue to rescue people alive. >> reporter: a long road for recovery to that city and those who call it home. and mexican president nieto saying this work will continue as long as it takes and as long as they believe some people could be alive in the rubble. reporting from mexico city, carlos grande, abc news. and american experts, more than 60 members of the l.a. search and rescue team

they brought specialized equipment, some of which was developed after the 1985 quake in mexico city. search dogs are helping rescue dozens of people. one named frida has gone viral in her special booties and what they call doggles. frida has res queue -- rescued more than 50 people in disasters. now to the disaster of maria. winds are still topping out at 125 miles per hours. it's bearing down on the turks and caicos islands. which remain under a hurricane warning overnight. there's a tropical storm warning in the southeastern bahamas. the last target was the dominican republic, the country still being hit with torrential rains and high winds overnight. there have been gusts reported as high as 60 miles an hour. we're told it could be months before some people in puerto rico have power again. maria knocked out electricity to all 3.4 million americans living there. today fema is opening what it calls an air bridge to the island. military transports will bring in generators, water, food and temporary shelters

american airlines also plans to fly in supplies later today. and dominica's governor says they have no water, no power and no communications. roosevelt skerrit says there is almost complete devastation in some villages. at least is 5 peop15 people hav dominica so far. the prime minister was evacuated to antigua. the military launched an offensive days ago. iraq's military says they have taken back most of the country, about 90%, from terrorists. and in raqqah, the battle is in the final stages. that key city was once fully controlled by isis. coalition forces estimate that they have captured about 70% of the city. that has caused some isis fighters to simply surrender. the number of fighters still remaining in the city is less

it was about 3,000 when the offensive started in june. an ugly scene in new york city. new video showing protesters punched as they were thrown out of a speech by the turkish president. some demonstrators screamed that recep erdogan is a terrorist. and then they were grabbed by security. no arrests were made. part of his visit included a meeting with president trump. now the president described the two men as having a great friendship. thursday's protest comes four months after security officers attacked demonstrators outside the turkish embassy in washington, d.c. facebook has agreed to turn over more than 3,000 political ads to congress. the political ads were bought by a russian company and ran during the presidential campaign and

water crisis. as a judge decides whether the state's top health official should stand trial. health records show a dramatic drop in pregnancies and a spike in fetal deaths after the city changed the source of its drinking water which led to it bei being tainted by lead. babies born in flint were 5 ounces lighter than the state average. gatorade is being sued for being antiwater. the state of california filed suit over what's described as an antiwater video game. it featured usain bolt. he runs faster if he hits a gatorade icon but slows down if he hits a water droplet. gatorade has agreed to pay a $300,000 fine. interesting game there. and the drink from the death wish coffee company may actually cause death. the company has recalled cans of

>> reporter: the two people trapped inside this crashed and burning vehicle are alive, thanks to the quick work of these atlanta police officers. >> get out! >> people in there? are there people in there? >> yes. >> reporter: in their police body cams you see them running with small fire extinguishers, trying to put out the car before it explodes in flames. >> oh, my god, the car's in flame. oh, my god. >> reporter: the doors are locked. the fire department is still on the way, and the victims have broken bones and are screaming. the officers tried breaking windows. officers daniel mccall, skillman, brooks and valentine were able to put out the fire in time. this was the car after the fire department used the equipment to get them out. >> i signed up for this job to help people. i never second guessed. >> reporter: the city is celebrating these officers. the two victims are still hospitalized in serious condition.
