earthquakes in one week and four over the course of a month. moreeath toll now, 319, than half of those in mexico city. rescue teams are still racing against the clock to find any survivors. work now begins for some who hope to rebuild. turning now to our weather, another summerlike day as the sun sets over the dmv. molly cochran has a first look at your forecast. can we call it a heat wave? >> kimberly, certainly feeling like it. we did not break any records in the d.c. area. but we did make it into the low 90's in the d.c. area and we are already, still feeling much like it. temperatures right now, upper 80's to low 90's towards frederick. 87 in the district and annapolis . overnight the temperatures will stay above average. a few clouds, but other than

even into the early half of the week. we continue to track hurricane maria. you can see on satellite the eye. it is a category 2 storm. let's take a look at the track for the early half of the week. stormwatch 17, keeping a close eye on this. by tuesday, a category one storm just to the east of the outer banks, and then it will be heading out to sea, all due to a cold front moving through the d.c. area by the time we head into thursday and friday. impacts already being felt along the eastern seaboard in the way of rough surf and rip currents. we also have tropical storm watches in effect for north carolina. we will check in with those and watc have a look at your extended forecast. kimberly: engineers in puerto rico are investigating a dam in danger of collapsing and flooding an area already devastated by hurricane maria. the 90-year-old dam developed a crack after the storm dumped 15 inches of rain on the island.

a partially collapsed spillway. thousands of people living your the dam have been told to evacuate. much of the island remains without power, fresh water, or phone service. >> we never expected to have a lot of debris in the areas. a lot of roads are closed. others are just gone. people have been waiting in line for hours to buy more gas. red cross officials in our area are ramping up eight in the wake of hurricane maria, sending more volunteers to u.s. territories. they tell us, after weeks of back-to-back disasters, they are not worn thin. rather, they are expanding their capacity. melissa has more. i have been involved 35 years with the red cross. to have 30-some days, three name hurricanes come in, one right after the other, it has been a lot of volume and activity from a personal level, and from an

organizational level. melissa: volunteers are heading out to help in puerto rico and the virgin islands. >> in both of those territories, we have large relief operations and we are flying in additional staff and volunteers. melissa: the national capital region of the red cross is assessing disaster needs of the u.s. and its territories from center. jerry mcgraw is a 30 year volunteer. >> you meet the people personally, and, you know, it is the first day they have seen somebody, for a few days, and of course hear their stories, how they were rescued. melissa: he just returned from providing aid in texas after the destructive hurricane harvey. >> i have been back a week. it did take me a couple days of recovering, just emotionally. melissa: this weekend, the red cross has 5200 staff and volunteers spread out in texas, louisiana, florida

virgin islands, puerto rico, and the carolinas. they have served 1.8 million meals, 2 million snacks, and 1.3 million relief items. mcgraw and a handful of font tears are on a short list of folks who could be redeployed immediately. >> we have to be ready for the next disaster. kimberly: a homicide investigation is underway in prince george's county. police say two men were found shot inside an apartment on cherry hill road this morning. one later died at the hospital. we are told the other man is in critical condition. no other details are being released at this time. an abandoned home went up in flames in stafford, and it proved a difficult fight for firefighters. it broke out yesterday afternoon on my bro point road. oro point road. there were no hydrants in the area. we are told the home had been abandoned for many years. the fire marshal

kimberly: pretty big week ahead on capitol hill. congress is taking on health care again, as the white house deals with north korea, again. senate leaders plan to bring the graham cassidy health care bill to a vote this week. however, the bill to repeal and replace the a formal care act appears to be on life support. two republican senator say they plan to vote no. if a third gop senator votes no, the bill will fail. >> it is very difficult for me

kimberly: several dogs displaced by recent hurricanes have found their forever homes. more than 80 furry friends were up for adoption today at petco in rockville. >> i always like to see the families that they get adopted to. i really like the dogs. kimberly: just yesterday, 27 dogs from texas rescue during hurricane harvey arrived at lucky dog animal rescue in arlington. those dogs were also up for adoption today.

four or five hurricanes ago. because it was. 4 it really was -- molly: it really was. after maria we have lee, out to sea, and it will come down a little bit. kimberly: what about this heatwave? molly: it certainly is very warm for this time of year. temperatures tomorrow will still be in the upper 80's. i want to play a little game on the map. can you find the cold front? notice where temperatures are in the 50's, in rapid city. d.c. metro at 87, minneapolis at 90 degrees. that cold front will eventually get into the d.c. area by the later half of this upcoming week, but we are still going to be very mild into monday. overnight forecast, redskins game looking good to go. temperatures stay in the 70's under mainly clear skies. northerly winds running three to six miles per hour. tomorrow, if you are sending your kids back to school, it will be very quiet. plentyf

afternoon. building into the mid to upper 80's for the daytime high tomorrow. in addition, a code orange has been issued, so air pollution running a little on the high side. if you have asthma or heart or lung issues, wan limit your time outdoors. that does include much of the d.c. region. here is a look at hurricane maria. still a category two, maximum sustained winds gusts of 125 miles per hour. as we go into the early half of the week, by tuesday, it is expected to downgrade into a category 1. it is going to be running into cooler water. taking a track just east of the outer banks. definitely something to watch as we go through the early half of the week. the same cold front i was mentioning will help move it out to sea. impacts party being felt along -- already being felt on the eastern seaboard. we have tropical storm watches for much of the outer banks, much of the carolina coastline. by wednesday, we could be talk

an hour reaching the coast. in the d.c. area, maria will be impacting us with rough surf and rip currents along the eastern shore, and also a little breezy. by tuesday morning, wind speed in the teens, eastern shore looking at peak wind gusts in the 30's. also more cloud cover coming to our extended forecast. tomorrow, beautiful forecast. tuesday and wednesday, watching maria off the coast line, and by thursday that's when the cold front gets here. that will cool us off going into the weekend. mid 70's on friday, and not many chances for rain. maybe just a very spotty shower on tuesday, but for the most part it is a dry forecast. not until next weekend when we could be tracking a few showers. notice those highs back in the low 70's. kimberly: i am hearing a lot of people ready for fall about now. molly: me, too. kimberly: fall means football. let's go to fedex field live,
