why, stephen paddock, the four years old, drove here, check into this hotel thursday night with more than 10 rifles and opened fire on 22,000 people. we have one bit of breaking news in regards to a statement that had been released, an fbi special agent says that law enforcement has made no connection to this terror group, no connection that he was in any way involved with isis, but it still leads to the question of what exactly his motivation was. president trump at the white house, addressing the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history. >> it was inactive. both. the fbi and the department of homeland security are working closely with local authorities in the investigation. >> the investigation just beginning a las vegas.

stephen paddock. checking into the mandalay bay resort once a temper 28. in his room, at least 10 rifles. last night, just after 10 p.m., he fired from the 32nd floor into a crowd of about 22,000 concertgoers. police believe that he shot and killed himself prior to their entry into his hotel room. describing a terrifying scene on the ground. >> no matter the direction or where you to cover, there were bodies as part of it and you didn't know where you were safe. cohost of the concert said that his first thought was pyrotechnics. instead it was gunshots >> it seemed like he just wanted to hit that group, as many of them as possible. >> and he succeeded, that was his goal. we know now that there are at least 58 people dead

to assist with the investigation and they will provide updates as to the investigation and how it develops. i want to thank the las vegas metropolitan police department. and all of the first responders for their courageous efforts and for helping to save the lives of so many. actedeed with which they his miraculous. and it prevented further loss of life. to have found the shooter so quickly after the first shots were fired is something for which we will always be thankful and grateful. it shows what true professionalism is all about. hundreds of our fellow citizens are now morning the sudden loss of a loved one. a parent, a child, a brother or sister.

his home in mesquite, nevada is now being searched. still trying to figure out what motivated the attack. as we said, this is now the deadliest shooting in u.s. history, with 58 people killed. 49 people were killed at the pulse nightclub last year. the third deadliest shooting was virginia tech in april of 2007. the government killed 33 people before killing himself and the fourth deadliest shooting happened in sandy hook back in december of 2012, where the shooter bear killed 27 people. >> some were falling, some were screaming and yelling. were in a tower up on top and everyone said to hit the floor, so everyone is laying on top of each other trying to get out of the way. the shots just kept coming. >> some incredib

overnight. ryan hughes is live in the newsroom with three action from social media. has been pouring in all morning long. let's start with muriel bowser, who says we are all praying for las vegas. that hearts go out to the family and friends of the victims in the first responders who rushed to their aid. you overheard the president thanking those first responders for saving so many people. larry hogan, maryland governor, said the first lady and i are "praying. god bless the first responders." remember gabrielle giffords, who survived an assassination attempt in 2011? she's praying for everyone involved. "no person should endure the horror the las vegas experience last night." then there is mike pence, who said to the family of victims

thehearts and prayers of american people are with you, you have our condolences and sympathy." former president barack obama expressing condolences and offering prayers to the victims. so much reaction pouring in, so many praying for everyone involved. as you mentioned, the deadliest mass shooting in history of the u.s.. thank you, ryan. the airport in las vegas was forced to close but earlier this morning the airport did reopen and flights left, some bound for our area. suzanne kennedy reports from dulles. was a long flight home back here to dulles international airport for leave lastrying to vegas overnight. they arrived just after dawn and learned of the extent of what happened as they were trying to take off. julia lily had been at the concert on friday night.

[gunfire] [shouting] brian: the sounds -- adrianna: the sounds of rapid gunfire, absolutely bone chilling, people scrambling for their lives in las vegas at a country music concert. so many have given their firsthand accounts of that shooting there. robin roberts spoke with one person who is at the jason aldean concert and thought they would not make it out alive. >> the hardest moment for me was i saw six young women, they were maybe 20, 22, they were all crying on the ground. [crying] to be cool, but at the moment i thought of this orlando shooting, we were in a room w

stage as far as the vantage point that this shooter would have from the 32nd floor of mandalay bay? how close are we talking to where you have got those 10,000 people crammed into a small space? >> of the mandalay bay is behind where the stage is. when we play, we don't see it. anything that was coming down from the 32nd floor is coming from not only up high, but also from behind as well. when we were on stage, we didn't see the hotel. they don't see a gun coming to them because it is coming from behind and over the top. autria: just absolute sitting ducks, there. i've been following all morning long on twitter. you are plugged into the country music scene, like you said. i understand that somebody backstage got struck and that there were bullet holes in the bus. >> oh, i can tell you that, the country music
