689 the first few seconds, many people thought the shots were fireworks. part of the show. but then chaos ensued. people ducked, scrambled, trying to figure out where the bullets were coming from. nowhere to hide. in seconds, bodies litter the ground. >> we have multiple casualties. multiple casualties. >> less than a minute after the shooting start, police move in. >> upstairs at mandalay bay. upstairs at mandalay bay. halfway up. i have seen the shots coming from mandalay bay. >> but still, no one knows where inside the mandalay bay the shooter is. the 64-year-old gunman reloads and keeps firing. >> people just started dropping around us. a lot of dead bodies. a lot of people were piling on top of whoever. even as they are pleading or not. >> the shooting lasts more than ten minutes. more than 500 people are down. >> i'm running out of blankets. >> nine minutes after the shots rang out,

command from police. >> we can't worry about victims. we need to stop the shooter. >> police pin down the shoot irlocation on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay hotel. s.w.a.t. teams move in with explosives. two hours after the gunman opened fire, police announced he is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. the big question right now what was the gunman's motive? that question is unclear. his brother says there were no warning signs. he had no political affiliations and didn't suffer from any apparent mental illness. he enjoyed gambling. was a millionaire and lived in a 55-plus retirement community. a lot of questions for federal and local investigators as they try to figure all of this out tonight. i'm sam sweeney, abc7 news. alison: wow! thank you. not long ago president trump led a moment of silence at the white house and he told reporters beforehand this has been a difficult day. when he addressed the nation

words about what happened. >> he brutally murdered more than 50 people. wounded hundreds more. it was an act of pure evil. it was our love that defines us today. and always will. larry: it was complete chaos for several minutes at bullets rain down on the concert field. one city that americans and all over the world seek out to have fun. but anything but that overnight. our sister station is there and nathan, describe the scene and what it's like there now. nathan: well, we are at the metro headquarters right now which is not near the strip. this is where we are waiting to hear from the sheriff to give an update on the investigation and the death toll that will happen in the next hour. we are expecting that to happen. as for the scene on the strip, there are still big sections of the s

bay that have been cordoned off and blocked off. it's an active investigation. police are in there to do what they have to do, documenting evidence, gathering it. even the concert venue we understand is going to be painstakingly very difficult task for investigators as they go there. trying to get the evidence. but also they are going to remove bodies from the scenes as well. a hard and a difficult reality for las vegas. this is nothing like we have seen before. ever want to see before. this is the self-proclaimed entertainment capital of the world. we were out there last night and there were people there all over. there were locals and out of state, out of country. this was an international incident. that is why we made international headlines. on top of the fact that this is now the deadliest mass shooting in modern history for the united states. we can tell you as far as las vegas, we are

no one has gone to sleep or has recovered from what has happened overnight. they are still trying to process it. a lot of people still asking why? larry: we will leave it there. thank you for that. reporting live for the sister station in las vegas. thank you for that. as the police search for a motive, they will look for clues to make this unique. one of them is gunman's age. nearly twice the age of the gunman in the nation's other deadliest shooting. in the three worst attacks before today the shooters were all in their 20's. jonathan elias in the abc7 satellite center with what we are learning about stephen paddock. jonathan: as the days go on we will learn more. what we know now is stephen paddock according to police had no international terror connections. his brother is speaking out about his brother. today stephen paddock's brother eric telling reporters he has no idea what it happened. >> he has no affiliation with anything as far as we know. >> stephen paddock was 64 ye

he had hunting and a fishing license that listed the home state as texas. he is reported to have grown up in sun valley, california. at this point he seems to have no connection with any terrorist groups or organizations. >> where did he get the machine guns? jonathan: paddock lived in mesquite, las vegas, 80 miles northeast of las vegas. more weapons and ammunition found inside the home by investigators. the f.a.a. said paddock had a pilot's license and is reported to have owned two airplanes. he had no apparent criminal record and his brother who helped him move in the house two years ago from melbourne, florida, says he had just a few guns. >> he might have had one long gun but he had them in a safe. he had no machine guns. jonathan: another brother bruce lives in california and says he hasn't talked to steveen in ten years and called him a laid back, never in a hurry guy. paddock's girlfriend marilou danley is in the pill feens and is not -- philippines and

paddock had been at the mandalay bay hotel since past thursday. he was found dead when the s.w.a.t. team entered the 32nd floor room where he opened fire. we are also hearing tonight that the shooter's brother described him as a multimillionaire real estate investor. as the day goes on we will learn more and perhaps a motive. in is satellite center, jonathan elias, abc7 news. alison: thank you. back to the victims. we are learning one of the victims at the massacre of the concert is from martinsburg area. having gone to the festival the past three years. tom roussey is there. tom, i know the community there is in shock tonight. tom: they are. they can't believe it because the concert was so far away, more than 2,000 miles. martinsburg is a small town. a lot of folks have connections to a lot of other families. this news is hitting the town throughout the day. victim comes from a family that is pretty well known

around here. >> anytime we lose someone like that, it's a sad time. tom: folks in martinsburg were stunned to learn one of their own died in the las vegas tragedy. >> to hear it was somebody close to her touches home. like you don't have to worry about other countries hurting us. we are you are theing ourselves. tom: throughout the day people learned through social media and local news about the death of denise who we are told grew up here and moved away with her military husband tony and moved back. the social media shows she was excited to be at the country concert. the twitter picture was posted a half hour before the shooting began. family gathered in the small town didn't want to say anything publicly other than to ask for prayers. they need to rally together for the family. >> we have a local family that lost someone near and dear to them and near and dear to our hearts to reach out to them in the days coming. tom: denise's husband survived

arms. >> you hear about it on the news and everything. but you don't think it could be somebody that they knew from the hometown. tom: travis bishop you heard from in story put his flag at half staff. according to the facebook page from denice she was born in hedgesville but lives currently in martinsburg. her family is well known around here. live in martinsburg, i'm tom roussey. alison: so sad. thank you. there has been an outpouring of support online. first daughter ivanka trump turning to twitter to say she found out about the shooting as she was waking opiating our collective hearts are breaking for the victims and their families. larry: former presidential candidate hillary clinton expressing the grief for the victims and making a call for stricter gun control laws. saying grief isn't enough. while calling out the n.r.a. alison: shared online today

selflessness. wait is as long as five hours to donate blood. people who couldn't wait that long were there to bring food and water for those who were able to get through. larry: one of the questions. how do you protect large crowds like this? abc7 chief political correspondent scott thuman on the hill. when you see a large crowd and how this happened, this has to be a worst case scenario that is impossible to plan for. scott: that is the difficulty. what we are talking about here is the difference between what is considered a hard target. something heavily protected that involves a lot of screening. something like inauguration or super bowl. versus something that is almost impossible to defend. under attack and nowhere to go. open air venues like the las vegas concert meant no warning and few options once it

marathon bombing. or the orlando nightclub attack. one thing in common, they are all considered soft targets. colin clark with the rand corporation has been studying the ultimate security challenges. >> i'm still amazed we haven't had more soft target attacks on shopping malls in this country. >> the number of the soft targets is countless versus the number of the hard targets, isn't it? >> it would be literally impossible to harden every soft target from terrorist attacks. >> clark says when the hard targets like the white house behind me continue to get more secure then soft targets become attractive options for attackers. >> the hard targets are so difficult to attack people may make calculation i'm never going to be able to do anything or i'll be stopped so let me target a shopping mall. >> we pray for the day when evil is vanished and the innocent are sa

alison: new reports say rock 'n' roll hall of famer tom petty is on life support. early reports he died but now he is still in the hospital. he is not expected to live through the day. he was rushed to the hospital sunday night in cardiac arrest. he was the lead singer of the heartbreakers and his career spanned decades. he was in the rock 'n' roll hall of fame in 2002. larry: opening statement for the accused mastermind of the attack in benghazi, libya. it killed four americans including ambassador chris stevens. this comes three years after they captured ahmed abu khattala. the trump administration vowed the future combatants will be dried in military court. alison: -- tried in military court. alison: supreme court is back in session. full bench of justices. among the cases heard this term are challenges related to the travel ban. immigration laws.

josh: some saw the 30's this morning. it's not around d.c. but as you get farther west chilly temperatures. tomorrow morning is a bit more mild. then we continue with the same trend as we work throughout the week. the temperatures go up for us. friday the morning low close to 60 degrees. from the 30's to the 60's. a big change. we have blue skies out there. wall-to-wall across the area. reagan national hitting 73 degrees. dew point what we used to measure how muggy the air is, starting to creep up. slowly. that is still low. that is dry air. one of the things we can do with the number is figure out how chilly it might get throughout overnight hours. the fact that the number is higher is a good sign temperatures won't be as cold as we work our way throughout the night. you want a jacket for later as you walk the dog. we are in the mid-50's but the temperatures will fall more slowly. it's not sunset.

it will happen more gradually. overnight lows in the 40's for some of it. we are hanging closer to 55 degrees in the d.c. area. a little more mild from last night and the same story. we carry on as we work through the week. tomorrow morning starting off again. 40s and 50's. by lunchtime 71 at 12:00 noon. 74 at 2:00. getting warmer. it will feel nicely for lunch. tomorrow is another day where the wind is not bad at all. feeling nice for you. as we get to the high tomorrow. 76 degrees. close to what is normal for this time of year. just a couple of degrees above. hanging on to the sunny skies. let's talk about the end of the week when the temperatures will continue to go up. look at the everything numbers. with the game at 7:30 for the nats, 77 at the first pitch. even on the way home it's 70 degrees. so partly cloudy, comfortable. nice weather as we head to the weekend. a few extra clouds for the weekend with the highs around

alison: this is voters being pulled from polling station amid chaos and clashes from police in spain's catalonia region, which includes barcelona. the country will not recognize the overwhelming vote to separate the region as an independent state. close to a thousand people were injured in the violent confrontations. they are urging a peaceful end to the division. larry: school permits revoked after the massive earthquake that killed hundreds of people. one collapsed killing 26 people last month and they are investigating the owners of the school as complaints have been filed against if government officials who

accused of ignoring construction at the site. alison: a plea to continue nonviolent form of protest. larry: today the religious leaders gathered at the martin luther king memorial as part of the anniversary for nonviolence and racial justice. sam ford is there with the message. sam: in a previously planned event they came together at the martin luther king memorial. black and white, catholic and evangelical to follow model of martin luther king who 60 years ago wrote the essay on non-violence and national justice. even as they also looked at the horrible situation in las vegas on which they offered prayers and questions of why people do such things. >> i really do believe that one of the barriers is we don't know each other well enough. >> we have to get to know each other. we will solve the problems. >> one

senseless tragedy of dr. king's day when they preached hope. >> when they murdered the girl in the birmingham church in 1963, king was able to speak to inexpressible grief an mourning and horror. sam: the ministers say they don't know what the las vegas shooter's motives are but it has to boil down to hate. that is what dr. martin luther king stood against. >> we reached a point in our society where people feel the only way to resolve problems is to resort to violence. >> the same spirit is the one that plays out in inner cities daily when young people kill each other on the street. they quoted dr. king's essay that hate cannot drive out hate only love with do that. in southwest washington, i'm sam ford, abc7 news. alison: o.j. simpson walked out of jail a free man this week
