a good good morning to you all. i'm diane macedo. >> and i'm gio benitez in for kendis gibson. we begin with new details in the las vegas shooting rampage. police say the shooter planned to escape and believe he had help so they're trying to track down possible accomplices. >> sources say the gunman had recently checked into several hotels and may have considered targeting a different concert a week earlier featuring lorde and chance the rapper. the shooter's girlfriend is talking to the fbi but insists she had no idea he was planning this attack and lana zak has more from las vegas. lana, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, gio and diane. so in addition to the suite that authorities say the shooter had here at the mandalay bay hotel, he had also reserved rooms in several other hotels and all of them overlook the concert venue. >> right here, come in here. >> reporter: in this newly released video you can see the heroism of ordinary americans in the worst of circumstances.

>> reporter: victims of the las vegas shooting being led into a vehicle before it sped off to the hospital. one of those victims andrea castilla was out celebrating with her sister athena. >> she deserved to chance to get help. she was -- i mean she was literally dying in my arms. >> reporter: trying to piece together his motive, authorities have been questioning the shooter's girlfriend marilou danley. these are her words as read by her attorney. >> it never occurred that he was planning violence against anyone. >> reporter: danley says when he sent her to the philippines she worried he was breaking up with her but in reality he had something truly evil planned. >> stephen paddock is a man who spent decades acquiring weapons and ammo and living a secret life. >> reporter: authorities say that in the day before his deadly assault he spent eight hours at the casino gambling. authorities now believe that paddock had planned to escape and despite few leads they question if he reall

alone. >> it's troublesome this individual was able to move this amount of gear into a hotel room unassisted. ♪ amazing grace >> reporter: meanwhile, the community, the survivors and the loved ones of the victims are all trying to heal. now law enforcement officials say there was no prior indication that paddock had suffered from any severe health and mental issues and as for the money that he wired the philippines, marilou danley says that was so she and her family could buy a home there. she remembered the shooter as a kind and caring man. gio, diane. >> certainly not the legacy he's going to leave behind. lana zak live from las vegas, thank you. that shooter also hit two nearby fuel tanks as he fired into that concert. >> the tanks hold jet fuel for the airport. the gunfire could have set off a massive explosion but the bullet lets did not penetrate

in the leg as he approached the shooter's hotel door is being praised as a hero. he told police what room the gunman was in, gave them a passkey for the door and helped evacuate the floor even though he was wounded. abc news consultant and former fbi agent steve gomez says he likely saved many lives. >> this security officer basically distracted the suspect, does look like after the security officer came then the shots pretty much ended. that might have saved many lives, hundreds if not more than that. >> absolutely. in a phone interview he says he was just doing his job. >> definitely did a lot more than that. and as we reported the gunman had several so-called bump stocks which allow a semiautomatic weapon to fire like an automatic one. >> a proposed ban on them is picking up new support in congress. our serena marshall has more. >> reporter: the debate about gun control grows louder. with 59

injured in the worst shooting in modern u.s. history. democrats seething over republicans' inaction. >> thoughts and prayers are not enough. >> what is the number? how many more dead bodies will it take to wake up this congress? >> reporter: inside the room of the las vegas shooter, 23 guns were found. >> there were 12 bump fire stocks identified. >> reporter: with the attachment you can fire 500 rounds per minute. >> i'll pull rearward with this. >> reporter: in this video by legally armed america, this ar-15 behaving like a machine gun with a continuous stream of bullets. compare that to when the bump stock isn't in place. a new bill would make those $150 attachments illegal. >> some have said we shouldn't do this now. we should wait. now is not the time.

equifax did a terrible job of protecting our data because they didn't have a reason to care to protect our data. >> that senator elizabeth warren lashing out at the former ceo of equifax after the data breach that's potentially affected 145 million people. and warren says she's furious that equifax is profiting from the breach. that's because the credit reporting company also sells data protection service which more people might now be inclined to buy now that their data has been compromised. critics call that a conflict of interest. both democrats and republicans want federal watchdogs to investigate whether equifax violated any laws and warren is calling for new rules to allow consumers to block access to credit information for free. diane, we have new video from puerto rico showing desperately needed supplies finally arriving in a remote mountain town cut

hurricane maria. locals tell us that politics are getting in the way of the relief efforts. some claim they are not getting supplies because they don't belong to the same political party as the mayor. less than 6% of the island has power. just 12% of the island has cell phone service. salmon lovers who shop at walmart may have been helping to fund north korea. an associated press investigation finds north korea has been sending its workers to plants in china where they process seafood that often ends up in american stores. walmart says its suppliers are no longer allowed to buy them from those plants. that new car technology that may make you safer may be distracting you from the road. aaa finds drivers programming and checking those navigation systems in the car were visually and mentally distracted for an average of more than 40 seconds. taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your risk of a crash. >> pretty scary. when we come back the mother now in jail for not

charges. the actor struck a plea deal, months after police found hundreds of videos and thousands images of child porn on hardrives in his home. as part of the deal-- salling must pay 50-thousand dollars restitution to each victim. prossecutors will ask for 4-to-7 years in prison, and salling must register as a sex offender. however, the judge could still elect to give salling up to 20 years behind bars. not guilty - that's the verdict in the retrial for a man accused of killing a caterer at a fairfax county wedding. jurors found kempton bonds not guilty in the death of tyonne johns. cell phone video shows chaotic moments before the stabbing last year at a park in chantilly. bonds claims he stabbed johns in self defense - but johns' friends and family disagree. the first trial in july ended in a hung jury.

new this morning. a new report is shedding new light on your college loans. the report by the national center of education statistics found that students who attended for-profit colleges were twice as likely or more to default on their loans than students who attended public schools. the report looked at students who began their undergraduate education in 2003 and defaulted on at least one loan over the next 12-years. it found 52-percent of students who attended private it found 52-percent of students who attended private schools defaulted on loans compared to 17-percent for those who attended a four year public institution and 26-percent at community college. it's xx and we're just getting started. breaking overnight - brand new vid
