good morning, i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm diane macedo. here are some of the top headline the we're following on "world news now." the remnants of hurricane nate are moving on after leaving flooding and destruction across the gulf coast. a rare sign across the las vegas strip. iconic lights dim in honor of the shooting victims there. the shooter's brother is now in nevada speaking with investigators. he's apparently trying to get them to understand his brother's mind-set. and days after announcing a leave of absence, harvey weinstein has been fired from his own company. this follows the revelation of

allegations from assistants to a-list actresses. and today is the first day of columbus day celebrations. many cities not celebrating the holiday. those are some of our top stories on this monday, october 9th. from abc news, this is "world news now." a fogood morning to you all. we begin this half hour with the latest severe weather system affecting the u.s. >> nate made landfall not once but twice in louisiana and then mississippi. there was flooding and damage to bridges and roads. you can see some of the scenes there of the flooding there in what appears to be a parking lot. now thousands of customers are still without power this morning. we get more now from abc's steve

osunsami. >> reporter: 10:00 p.m. local time, the winds picked up after hours of wondering where the storm was, hurricane nate arrived on the gulf coast with 30-foot waves and winds near 85 miles per hour. by midnight, new orleans knew it was safe, and they were lifting their curfew. but in biloxi, this was an emergency. the eye wall is right here. we're about to enter the center of the storm. 12:30 a.m., it's high tide. and now we're seeing the storm surge from the forecast. the parking decks of the casinos, the beau revauj, cars were bouncing around in seawater. >> it has engulfed the first floor here. >> reporter: there were 300 guests at the golden nugget. the casino is open. >> we have remediation in place. those folks will have that sheetrock continued to soon and we'll get the escalators back up and running. >> reporter: now a

seeing the storm surge too. earlier, a large waterspout was spotted in orange beach. firefighter also to rescue a family of four from a home taking on water. victor oquendo was in birmingham. >> reporter: on the other side, flags blowing around in the wind. >> reporter: nate isn't done yet, sending this funnel cloud to the cleveland county fair in north carolina. the recent string of storms has been tough on fema. >> we're still working harvey, irma and the issues in puerto rico and the virgin islands and now this one. >> reporter: the cleanup is on. when the gaming commission here decided to close the casinos, it certainly didn't seem like the right decision at the time, but it certainly was. those casinos will be opening up over the next couple days as the cleanup continues. steve osunsami, abc news, gulf port,

>> and that weather system is now moving through the appalachians on the way to the northeast. >> let's get the latest from paul williams who's tracking the system for us. >> good morning, diane, kendis. rainstorm nate, that's what we're calling him now, rainstorm nate brings thunderstorms throughout upstate new york, all the way toward maine. isolated flooding is going to be a problem monday into monday night. drenching showers into new york and pennsylvania with slippery roads, because travel's going to be a monster with areas of flooding and significant travel delays. diane, kendis? >> and while utility crews are making good progress restoring power in mississippi, efforts are not going to well in puerto rico. >> only about 11% of the island's customers have electricity. after puerto rico was hit by back to back hurricanes, more than 85% of the power grid was destroyed during the storms but it

then. adding to the problem, the power company there is bankrupt. and president trump has yet to clarify a vague tweet stating only one thing will work with north korea. but mick mull vavaney is sayingt military options are clearly on the table. it's a point of tension between the president and rex tillerson. the president acknowledged that they disagree on a couple things and says he wants tillerson to be tougher but insists they have a good relationship. and kim jong un has promoted his youngest sister. she was already a senior party official but will have more power as part of the top decision-making body. president trump is hinging a deal on daca on a list of demands. he sent congress a list which

card system. it's not clear what would happen to the d.r.e.a.m.ers who were brought to the u.s. illegally as children if no deal is reached. democrats say the proposal fails to represent any attempt at compromise. vice president mike pence has reignited the feud with the nfl after walking out of a game in front of kneeling players. >> a republican fires back overnight. >> reporter: the political battleground playing out on twitter sunday. president trump taking aim at senator bob corker, after the tennessee republican announced last month he will not run for reelection. trump wrote, senator corker begged me to endorse him for reelection. i said no, and he dropped out. koerk fired back, dwighting it's a shame that the white house has become an adult day care center. someone obviously missed their shift this morning. it wasn't always this way. backn

prison for an alleged terror plot. they wanted to create the next 9/11. they coordinated bombings and shootings in the subways. the men were arrested last year but the justice department unsealed the details on friday. and a man arrested with an automatic rifle says it's a misunderstanding. he was among three men in a car stopped for speeding on saturday. police say samora told police he had a handgun. he th they found a pressure cooker in his trunk as well. he said he was meeting his brother to go to a gun range. >> that led to increased security at the chicago marathon. >> more than 40,000 runners hit the streets. 2 million spectators lined the route and they saw something we haven't seen in 15 years. >> olympian
