all along if players took a knee. president trump tweeted, "i asked vp pence to leave stadium if any players kneeled. i am proud of him." former quarterback colin kaepernick started the protest last season. 49ers player eric reid calls pence's actions a pr stunt. we were probably going to do it again. mary: some are asking, was it worth it? after all the scandals involving unnecessarily expensive travel by cabinet secretary's, how much taxpayer money was wasted on this stunt? >> according to calculations, that quick trip costs nearl -- cost nearly $243,000. that does not include advanced personnel, secret service, or support on the ground.

are looking into an attempted sexual assault case. a woman told police she was assaulted around 1:30 sunday morning near water view politics -- water view plaza. police have not made an arrest. gunshots inside a walmart and now police in ellicott city are looking for the guy who pulled the trigger. it started as a fight, then one man shot another man and took off. it happened around midnight on northridge road. the victim also fired several shots, but no one was hit. we are just one month out from the virginia gubernatorial election. tonight, candidates will face off in their third and final gubernatorial debate. we are carrying it for you live tonight on news channel 8 at 7:00 p.m. at uva wiseuare off university. up -- wrappedmped up at columbus plaza. ryan h

keeping a close eye on the weather, even tossing around the idea of moving the ceremony indoors. the u.s. marine band canceling this morning because of the wind. despite all of that and despite a little bit of rain, d.c. is celebrating 525 years of discovery, honoring christopher columbus. it was 1492 when columbus' bold endeavor helped change the map to include the new world. the ceremony organized by the national christopher columbus association and the national park service. the ambassadors from both spain and italy will also be speaking and celebrating the spirit of exploration and the important contributions italian-americans have made to the united states. >> for us, it's a very important day. colombian encounter, as the historians refer to it sometimes, is arguably the most important single moment in human history. r

kellye: wildfires tearing through the west. much of the state of california facing red flag warnings this noon as flames torched hundreds of acres in napa county and sonoma county.

is -- escape. >> mandatory evacuations as raging wildfires rip through at least 200 acres. >> we don't have the exact time this started. certainly we don't know what the cause is. right now we are focused on trying to get people out of the area. reporter: high winds and dry conditions causing the flames to spread rapidly, hopping freeways in the heart of wine country. >> my wife and i live in downtown napa. it's actually raining ash. be 50flames could easily feet tall as they are cresting the hillside. pretty frightening. reporter: wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. >> there is a plethora of premium wineries all over the place, and a lot of these people haven't picked their grapes yet. housedr: the resort the pga tournament over the weekend, with

firefighters and police racing to the scene. kellye: when you compare that to what's happening in other parts of the country, a dramatic difference. josh we've got a little bit of everything: across -- josh: we've got a little bit of everything. colorado is dealing with three to six inches of snow possible around denver. as we get over toward our area, we are dealing with the rain and the moisture thanks to nate working its way off to the northeast. let's talk closer to home. temperatures in the mid to upper 70's, but feeling more like we are a few degrees warmer, about 81 degrees thanks to how much moisture is in the air. humidity is really high. this is more like a tropical air mass than what we are used to for october. the higher the dew point, the more moisture floating around. anytime you get about the 70's, feeling oppressive. we are not going to get a big break from the humidity until next

that will be our big change in the humidity. today is going to be the worst. as we get into tuesday, it's a little bit better. wednesday and thursday, some slight improvements as well. but not really going to shake that muggy feeling at all for this week. a few showers hang on in southern maryland and over toward the bay for the next several hours, but that's about it. we will get some sunshine. with the money factor, it will feel -- muggy factor, it will feel closer to 90 degrees. tuesday will be much prettier. not a lot of sunshine. tomorrow, enjoy it. as we work our way into the evening hours, the clouds start to build back in. more rain showers wednesday and another chance on thursday. not going to pick up a ton of rain out of these, but enough to slowly start eating away at our deficit. feeling more like 90 this afternoon. the mugginess will make a big difference.

bombshell report accusing him of sexually harassing women, harvey weinstein is out of a job. the weinstein company initially said the embattled mogul would be taking an indefinite leave of absence from the company. late sunday, the remaining board members, including brother bob, ouster, which comes amid a week of growing fallout from that "new york times" report, which describes allegations.ment on friday, three members of the weinstein company's all-male, ni ne-member board of directors resigned, followed on saturday by attorney lisa bloom, who tweeted she would be stepping down as weinstein's advisor, just one day after she appeared on "good morning america." >> this is textbook sexual harassment. >> it's gross. >> it's illegal. >> yes.

a category 1 hurricane, making landfall twice, first in the louisiana, then a second time in mississippi. heavy rains and storm surge battered the coast, flooding many casinos in biloxi, mississippi. filling up parking lots with five feet of seawater. the cars left behind tossed like toys. churning up a waterspout off the coast of louisiana. the storm traveled north, quickly downgraded to a tropical depression, but still bringing more rain and even destructive tornadoes in the carolinas. >> we got trapped. it was overwhelming. >> very scary. nate is only the latest in a string of destructive and deadly hurricanes to hit the u.s. this year. the administrator a fema saying that nonstop onslaught of rough weather has been a challenge. >> nearly 85% of my entire agency is deployed right now. we are still working massive issues in harvey,

as the issues in puerto rico and the virgin islands, and now this one. maggie: some local officials are criticizing fema and the trump administration for not doing enough, notably, the mayor of san juan, puerto rico. >> we filtered out the mayor a long time ago. we don't have time for the political noise. scenes likekfully, this one are not that common along the gulf coast. the mayor of biloxi says his city was prepared for nate. maggie rulli, abc 7 news. kellye: meteorologist josh knight is here with a look at the forecast. a rather cloudy day. josh: cloudy and still breezy. the american flag flapping in the breeze there. some of these flags on the pier. the wind gusts not too bad. i think we are done with the strongest breeze. we will watch for the cloud cover to break down and temperatures to warm up quickly. right now sitting at 78 but feeling more like the low

cloudy skies take over the map, but those will start to break down as we go throughout the afternoon. there's a slim chance a couple more showers could pop up across the area. i'm not looking for too much of that. wind gusts, 20 miles per hour near fleet -- near leesburg and fredericksburg. ashing too strong left over the system continues to move farther off to the northeast. temperature wise, working our way back up into the low-80's, but feeling more like 90 degrees once you factor in the humidity. still windy, but drying out. temperatures slow to fall throughout the evening. even at 11:00, still in the mid-70's. cooler weather is on the way. we will time that out for you. the southwest waterfront makeover is almost complete. the wharf finally opens this week, but with it comes some big changes for drivers.

reporter: the long-awaited opening is finally here. this week, thousands of people will be down and around southwest waterfront. the district apartment of transportation has released a plan on how to manage the influx of visitors in the -- the district department of transportation has released a plan on how to manage the influx of the visitors. traffic control officers will be on duty to keep cars and people moving through the area. ddot is also planning to use traffic signal timing to ease traffic. people are being urged to take public transportation. we now know a soldier from maryland is one of the people injured during training at fort jackson, south carolina. two soldiers were killed and six others were hurt. officials say friday's accident involved a military vehicle and a troop formation.

latest feud is intensifying, going at it on twitter with gop senator bob corker from tennessee. corker going so far as to call the white house "an adult day care center." reporter: it was a presidential slam not often said by the opposing party, let alone within party rank and file. tennessee senator bob corker saying president trump treats the office like a reality show and is so reckless the nation could be on the path to world war iii. in several instances, he has hurt us as it relates to negotiations that were under way by tweeting things out, corker said. the chair of the senate foreign relations committee, who is not seeking reelection, candid in his rebuke of the president. it all began last week with this comment. >> secretary mattis and chief of peopleelly are those that help separate our country

parenting dilemma that so many people are facing. should you let your child play football? more and more parents are saying no and even some nfl players are expressing their concerns. one father is sharing his story about why he decided to let his eight-year-old play. he sat down with abc's linsey davis. >> repetitive head trauma. >> the movie, the movie was based on the gq article, so i knew it was dangerous. linsey: he was well aware of the risks of tackle football when he sent his -- when his then eight-year-old son asked if he could play. after a great deal of soul-searching, chronicled in the article, "what kind of father lets his son play son,all?", he said, "yes, you can play." why is it you let your son play

afternoon closer to the mid-80's. a very summerlike sort of day, about 15 degrees above what is normal for this time of october. as we work our way into thursday, 67 to 70 degrees around 5:30, still expecting things to be cloudy and humid, still relatively mild, but thursday will be one of the days we could get some rain back into the forecast. that moves in wednesday and thursday. with that in mind, some delays, a possibility, but not looking for thunderstorms. any rain that shows up should be on the lighter side. today, we topped out around 83. it feels a little more comfortable tomorrow. better chance of rain wednesday and thursday. cloudy skies with those showers moving in. heading into friday, still an isolated shower chance. for the weekend, we get more sunshine to move back in here. temperatures top out around 80 degrees. as

kellye: developing now, a sparking outrage online for being racially insensitive. now the company is responding. dove, synonymous with its cleansing bar and real beauty campaigns, apologizing after this image went viral, showing an african-american woman removing her brown shirt with a bottle of dove body wash at her side, appearing to reveal herself as a white woman in a light colored top. it was compiled from four

grabs from a three-second video dove posted on its facebook page, showing women of three different ethnic cities -- eth a t-shirt toving show lighter skin. adse are putting out these with these subliminal messages that are telling young ladies that your darker skin is not beautiful enough. you need to appear if i and clean yourself. this was a tone deaf -- you need to purify and clean yourself. this was a tone deaf ad. adrienne: in response to thousands of furious responses, dove removed the clip, apologizing on facebook, saying, "dove is committed to representing the beauty of diversity and we missed the mark in thoughtfully representing women of color, and we deeply regret the offensive has caused." the 60-year-old company getting more backlash for that explanation.
