of the wharf is officially open. it is a multibillion dollar development that has been in the works for several years. nancy: so exciting. it's not done yet. abc7 has team coverage throughout the hour from southwest water front. we begin with sam sweeney who was there for the big party. hey there, sam. sam: hey, nancy. ten years of planning. three and a half years of construction. finally we are here. take a look down the promenade. you can see how many thousands of people are showing up despite the gloomy weather. the fire is on. and in a little bit they will be making s'mores out here at the central fire pit. earlier today, mayor bowser, councilmembers and the againer officially cut the ribbon late this morning to dedicate the wharf. congresswoman eleanor holmes norton told the crowd this project was the toughest bill she has ever gotten through congress. it will bring in 6,000 permanent jobs and it is expected

million visitors a year. the mayor told everyone today that this project hit all of its goals. jobs, tax revenue for the city and even affordable housing. mayor bowser: when we look at this beautiful water front, we know it's top quality. we think about the tenants, both commercial and retailers who are coming here, we know they will bring a diversity of options. when we think about all the wonderful residents who will be moving here, we know that they will bring life to this waterfront. sam: the party is just getting started. if you are coming out here tonight, use public transportation. there are two metro stops. there is l'enfant plaza. and there are the water taxis that are free. the foo fighters will be opening up but the tickets are already gone. reporting live

how did we get here? how did we get into the position where we are right now in game five? it all happened last night at wrigley field. michael a. taylor with a massive grand slam home run in the eighth inning to give the nats the 5-0 lead. they never looked back. sean doolittle came out in the ninth inning to shut the door. so it all comes down to this ballgame tonight. a lot of misery for d.c. sports fans. can they get over the hump? can a team make it to the conference final? it can happen tonight. the washington nationals are focused. >> just trying to go out there and play game five and have fun. this is what it is all about. going out there in front of our fans and try to win a ballgame. >> you play for each other. you play one pitch at a time. try to win each pitch. you leave it all out there. at the end of the day when it's all said and done, you play the game to win. regardless of what it says on the

of homeland security. jonathan: now we head out west to the deadly california wildfires. the pictures are heartbreaking. more than 25 people have been killed. 3,500 homes and businesses reduced to ashes. entire neighborhoods just gone. search and rescue teams are teaming up with fire crews so they are not only going through what is left of some of the homes but looking for some of those that might be missing. hundreds have been reported missing. 200,000 acres now scorched. elizabeth hur is in santa rosa with the latest. elizabeth: jonathan, for days, thousands of firefighters have been working around the clock. authorities say naturally they are tired. but thankfully, more help is now on the ground and we are told they are now working together to try to get ahead of the raging wildfires that you can see left so many towns in ruin. the damage done is catastrophic. with crews attacking the massive wildfires from the ground and from the air, finally on this day four of

reporting progress. >> today is a different day. it's a good day for us. elizabeth: firefighters beginning to contain the fires that raged out of control across northern california. so far scorching nearly 200,000 acres completely wiping out some neighborhoods and destroying thousands of homes and businesses. the danger not over yet for so many communities, including napa county with flames inching closer to city limits. all 5,000 residents remain under a mandatory evacuation. >> you will not be given life safety at this point. you are on your own. if you are trying to visit calistoga, you are not welcome. >> there is no cell service. elizabeth: with the futures of their homes still uncertain, so many residents racing out of town in disbelief. >> it's unbelievable. i can't believe this is

jonathan: three incidents of racist gra if thety found university -- graffiti found at the university in two weeks. and richard reeve is live on campus for the investigation. >> the university is calling this a hate bias incident. three separate occasions where racist graffiti was found in the men's room of the dining hall behind me. they said it was found inside a restroom stall with a black marker. the first incident at 10:00 in the morning graffiti on a wall. then october 7, 5:43 in the afternoon, someone discovered an offensive phrase, swastika. two days later in the afternoon, more graffiti found. police say they have conducted interviews but they come to look for information on the suspect or suspects. the school issued a statement in which it says u.m.d. is deeply committed to combating hate and creating a saf
