7,000 people lost power in napa county alone. abc's elizabeth herr is in santa rosa. >> reporter: from above the devastation is mind-boggling. block after block of charred ruins of what were once family homes, in santa rosa, this is all that is left of a catholic high school. as firefighters do everything they can to prevent even more neighborhoods from turning into this. >> 30 years, my business, not letting a fire take it. going to clear everything out as much as we can. >> reporter: the threat from the 20-plus fires still burning, testing fire fighters, hacking at the brush then back burning in sonoma. >> the backfire will take away the fuel bed creating a larger buffer along this roadway. >> on the front lines, firefighters dealing with thick smoke and tough terrain. and here in santa rosa where we are this is devastation just

critical conditions farther south near los angeles and santa barbara area. >> wild weather in oregon. check out the tornado. touching down at an airport in the portland area. along with some hail, and lightning. the whole thing powerful enough to flip over two small planes. >> moving on now, an american woman and husband captured by the taliban five years ago will be returning to canada. caitlyn coleman and joshua boyle and three children all born since the kidnapping will head back to boyle's home country of canada. he refused to board a u.s. military aircraft, the family was released wednesday during an exchange between the u.s. and pakistani military. the couple was captured in 2012 in afghanistan and had only been seen in videos released by the taliban. >> more than three weeks after hurricane maria made landfall in puerto rico

house is committed to helping puerto rico and the house has just approved a $36.5 billion disaster relief package that comes at request of this white house, the senate is expected to vote on it next week. president trump is expected to decertify iran nuclear deal today. and lay out a new strategy. the announcement this afternoon in a speech from the white house where he will declare the agreement is not in the national security interest of the united states. the president is also expected to outline iran's troubling nonnuclear activities which he says violate the spirit of the agreement. congress will then have to decide whether to reimpose sanctions against iran which would in effect sink the deal. >> days after the president said secretary of state rex tillerson was wasting time negotiating with north korea his chief of staff is taking a slightly different stand.
