adrianna: back now with a consumer alert. major lawsuits targeting three of the biggest diet soda brands, accusing them of misleading marketing they claim artificial sweeteners they use may cause weight gains instead of causing them to shed pounds. follopaula faris has the story. paula: diet soda is under fire. the three largest makers of carbonated beverages are facing proposed class-action lawsuits, alleging that the marketing of the diet sodas are false, misleading, and unlawful to consumers, deceiving shoppers into thinking that beverages will help them manage or lose weight. >> products marketed as diet products should be helping people lose weight, and these products are not helpful in losing weight. they may do exactly the opposite. paula:

partame, the artificial sweetener used in the sodas, will likely cause weight gain instead of weight loss or healthy weight management. >> no question this is deceptive advertising. paula: although the studies do not show conclusively that asp artame causes weight gain, several do show a correlation between diet soda consumption and obesity. manufacturers of artificial sweeteners and the makers of diet soda say that reduced calorie products are an important tool in helping consumers improve their diet and lose weight. next at noon, a bunch of events here in our area this weekend, so find out how the weather will be. molly has the final check of the
