shelter in silver spring. >> i'm not happy camper but i think things have been taken care of so well. >> her remaining 1,100 plus ighbors made a -- made accommodations of their own. >> they live in downtown bethesda. >> a number of us are friends in the building. so one of the gals is in the south building. i'm going to get my air mattress. reporter: you can't tell from the outside but the garage level at the promenade apartments is charred. montgomery county fire rescue shared these pictures with us. they say a transformer blew around 9:00 a.m. and they rushed over. >> and after arriving they discovered they were -- smoke still from the upper floors of the building. reporter: smoke alarms woke up the tenants. >> a newborn who is 2 1/2 months old. i woke up to the sirens. and my wife was nursing him. and she had said the power went out about two minutes before. reporter: everybody in the north towers 550 units

forced to leave their homes. but even that was a struggle. >> i couldn't get to my car. because there was smoke in all of the parking garage. reporter: we noticed workers behind the building. skorokhod to fire officials, the north tower is structurally safe but without power it isn't habitable. the big question now is when can the evacuees return home? we're getting two different estimates. the montgomery county fire department said they should return home in about 48 hours. but the residents tell us that the management of the apartment complerks so they can return home in about seven days. we'll keep you postaled with what happens next. in silver spring, abc 7 news. >> something we know the time frame for. the countdown. is on for the marine corps marathon. now less than 10 hours away. we caught up with some of the newest runners to the race earlier today.

stranger to hitting the pavement. >> this is my 16th marine corps marry thon and 118th marathon. reporter: number one was back when she was 50. she admits it was something completely new to her. >> my husband said did you know how long the marry thon is? i said about two or three miles. and he said, if i was you i would be read more about it and start running. reporter: the now 66-year-old says she hasn't stopped and opening her tomorrow to a marine from florida. >> first marry thon ever and we will hold hands through the finish. reporter: he's not the only marine running the 26.2 for the first time. >> i knew this would be for me for a marathon that this would be the added mow vegas running the marine corps marathon what it would take to get through this. reporter: crews on saturday kicking it into high gear to get ready for the big day. >> throughout the day you'll see marines moving things. and contractors.

getting everything set up. reporter: for the runners it's a day of buying gear, picking up bibs, and for some, like james and a group she trained with a last-minute jag. >> and what i'm shooting for right now is to inspire as many people as i can. reporter: marry thon workers say they're a little concerned about tomorrow's expected mid 70 degree temperatures. they're prepared with medical personnel. that will be stationed all throughout the area. now, with so many people and road closures expected, they are asking everyone who is headed to this area to take metro. in arlington, abc 7 news. >> so the 26.2 mile route will wind through arlington and d.c. tomorrow morning. that means plenty of roads will be closed. download the abc 7 app to see the list and find out when they will be cloached as well as when they will reopen. as amy mentioned, you don't want to miss out on any of the fun surrounding the race because of those road closures. so take metro.

metro is opening its stations at 6:00 tomorrow morning to accommodate thousands of runners. and the crowds there to support them. first forecast mere at 11:00 as we look at the capital. skies fairly clear a few high clouds streaming in late on this evening but now for the most part they're kind of broken. 62 outside. but what will it be like for the racers tomorrow morning when you head to get started? i'll tell you, most of us will be seeing temperatures in the 50's. at least inside the beltway. if you come in from the burbs from ashburn and ma that ises and largo at 5 -- manassas and largo at 51. sunup at 7:25 of the 50's lining up but first racers actually kick off the race at 7:55. they're staggered. but several hours into that race, temperatures will quickly be into the 70's for some of those finishers. it definitely will be a warm afternoon. more on the next 10 days and a look to our next chance of beneficial rain coming up in a bit. >> a rather joint appearance raising money for hurricane relief efforts. all five livingor

>> pretty incredible to see all four presidents there. damage estimates from hurricanes harvey, irma and maria now thopping $300 billion. now to a tragedy. just days after graduation for a charles county man. police say a 24-year-old and two of his friends were killed in a high speed crash in waldorf early this morning. this happened on route 925. our melissa duponte talking with the man's father. >> my life went down when my son died. reporter: beside himself with grief. thursday he was celebrating his son luis alexander duboin's g.e.d. graduation and today he was supposed to join the military. a celebration planned at home for his son and friends. >> and your graduation. and never came back. he told me, luis, and car

when i opened the door two state police. reporter: luis was riding in the front seat of his friend's car. another friend was in the back. according to maryland state troopers, the driver ran a red light in front of a trooper. when the trooper tried to pull over the car, the driver sped off. going as fast as 100 miles an hour. the driver hit a median and went airborne hitting a tree. killing all three men including luis alexander. troopers believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. in hughesville, abc 7 news. >> tonight, we're learning the name of the woman who was called late last night in southeast. police say sean t. -- shauntice murphy was shot on u street and a man also has nonlife-threatening injuries. the gunman is on the run tonight. police are offering $25,000 for information leading to an arrest. coming up on abc 7 news at 11:00, reducing crime in the u.s. the federal incentives to get more p

kimberly: you have merd a lot about this u.s. soldier. the president called his grieving widow this week. he gave his life serving his country. and he was laid to rest today. a heartbreaking image again tonight. his pregnant wife saying goodbye, leaning over his casket. sergeant ladavid johnson was killed in an isis ambush in west africa. the 25-year-old along with three other u.s. service members were killed earlier this month in niger. today in johnson's home state of florida, strangers and veterans came to pay their respects. >> everybody is just crying again. he was very respectful. ery helpful. kimberly: the ambush still under investigation including how johnson got separated from

away. and the fallen hero also leaves behind two children. in ocean city today, dozens gathered along the beach to remember the maryland police and correctional officers who died in the line of duty. prince george's county police tweeted these photos at the law enforcement memorial. a beautiful day to remember those lives lost there. on this sunny saturday. threatening words now. from attorney general jeff sessions to criminals. spoke at the major city's chiefs association fall meeting in philadelphia. about initiatives to reduce violent crime. >> our goal is not to fill up the courts or just fill up prisons. our goal is not to manage crime or merely to punish crime. our goal is to reduce crime. our goal is to make every community safer. especially the most

have a chance. if you're looking early and when i say early around midnight you want to look more toward the east. if you're looking more toward dawn look toward the south a neat thing to check out. and the weather eventually getting back to some cooler numbers as we head through the next couple of days. i still think tomorrow for race day we're still in the 70's. 70's for monday but i do think our next system is moving more quickly and that means added clouds earlier. the showers probably by monday night. and time that out and we may have to shave a couple degrees off monday. monday is dry but those showers move in here overnight and by tuesday morning, they're just a morning threat. and then they're moving on out of here a big picture of what's happening. some high clouds streaming overhead. nothing big out there this evening. futurecast good for your sunday although warm. with that southwest wind and high pressure overhead and some good sun sheen and some high clouds but still feel the heat. sunday to monday, notice the clouds. maybe even a sprinkle monday. i still think it's a warm day ahead of our cold front but we'll stay gray for most of the
