"abc7 news at 4:00" starts right now. jonathan: right now at 4:00, paul manafort plead not guilty. alison: the former trump campaign chairman and business associate rick gates facing several charges as a result of the mueller investigation. now these are the first high profile criminal cases brought up as a result of the post-election probe. jonathan: abc7 has team coverage this everything from federal court to capitol hill. update on the charges and what it could mean. let's start off with lana zak and the developmentsments in the breaking story. >> it doesn't have anything to do with us. alaska sarah huckabee sanders keeps distancing trum

the investigation and robert mueller. george papadopoulos shown hear with mr. trump in a meeting that the candidate described as my national security chief. >> this individual was a member of volunteer advisory council that met one time over the course of a year. alaska but trump praised papadopoulos. >> he is an excellent guy. alaska according to the indictment at this meeting papadopoulos said he had connections to help arrange a meeting between mr. trump and russian president vladimir putin. it charges that papadopoulos met with a professor connected to the officials and russian woman who falsely claimed to be related to putin. but most damaging, the indictment alleges that papadopoulos notified at least three senior campaign officials that the russians had thousands of e-mails damaging to hillary clinton. papadopoulos pled guilty earlier in month to lying to the f.b.i. i was made public today on the same day

the former trump campaign chairman and deputy campaign manager rick gates pled guilty to 12 counts including conspiracy against the united states, false statement and conspiracy to launder money. >> president donald trump is correct. there is no evidence that mr.manman and the trump campaign colluded with the russian government. alaska the charges against manafort and gates don't reference direct allegation of collusion between russia and members of the trump campaign. both gates and manafort have been released to home confinement. manafort on $10 million bond and gates, $5 million. reporting live, lana zak. jonathan: this is george papadopoulos who did plead guilty to making a false statement to the f.b.i. the bureau saying he admitted to lying about the interactions with foreign officials close to the kremlin including discussing getting dirt related to the clinton

he has been cooperating with the mueller investigation since july and the indictments one unsealed today. alison: the list is long. paul manafort and rick gates are committing half a dozen different crimes. so what does it mean? tom roussey continues the team coverage and he is speaking with political and legal experts today. what did you find out? tom: at one point we went here to try to break it down for the viewers. here at the george washington university law school we talked with professor paul shift berman. three main take-away from the talks with the professor that happened in the last hour. he said first off the investigation appears to be moving very fast. he says make no mistake, these crimes and the charges are very serious. he also says there is very likely more coming. that being said, as we mention if you read through the

31-page indictment against manafort or gates you don't see the name president trump or reference to the campaign but the professor says we shouldn't read too much into that. >> the indictment itself doesn't touch the trump political issue but my guess is manafort has a huge amount of information that he might be willing to give to the prosecutor in exchange for better treatment with regard to the serious indictment its. tomas that, however, is just referencing the indictment against paul manafort and his right-hand man, rick gates. but the papadopoulos issue is a different issue because it has potential connections with the trump campaign. we talk more about that and getting more analysis about that coming up in the 5:00 hour later. reporting live outside the g.w. law school, tom roussey, abc7

they were again not life threatening injuries but the police release a photograph of a car of interest that might have had something to do with this particular shooting. then we went over to -- we heard about 1:15, two hours later, double shooting over at fourth street. the 4200 block. we went over there. the same story. two men shot. non-life threatening injuries. one of them took himself to the hospital. but a lot of concern here. we talk to the councilmember who was in his office two blocks away when this shooting occurred. >> we had a state of emergency in this ward as i said before. as a city we need councilmembers on board and the community on board. we keep saying crime is down. it's not down. four shooting in ward eight and going on over and over again in our ward. sam: we will have more at 5:00, including we

show you the picture she took of it. you can see there, a human form, a mask that is dark and it appears to be a lynching. well, we talked too the homeowner today who put it up and since taken it down. he showed us his garage filled with a halloween decoration including the mask he said was on the depiction. yes, it does show a lynching but not of a black man. well, the neighbor who complained to us isn't buying it. >> i saw it and i thought it was racist display. what i saw was essentially an effigy of a black person being lynched. brad: we are still working on the story. when we come back at 5:00, a little more from the ne

it doesn't absolve the timing or put the two together. it does says actions that are illegal took place between 2006 back then and through 2016. if we did anything illegal in that specific time we don't know yet. there is a trio in trouble. you mention manafort, the more household name of the three. he had the associates and also a former adviser george papadopoulos who has already pleaded got lying to the f.b.i. about trying to set up the meeting with the russians.

manafort denied doing lobbying for the officials in ukraine but that is something that the investigation is looking into. how deep do the ties run? and what is the white house reaction? you have alleged to it. the white house with a buffer between the president and manafort pointing out that the president fired paul manafort after word started to come out he got millions of dollars in his prorussian work for the former ukrainian president. so there is a ton to dig through. this is early on. jonathan: are there over indictments to follow? scott: i have talked to people some are high up in the white house who seem to believe that
