this morning on "world news now," the first criminal charges in the russia investigation. >> two former members of the trump campaign are under house arrest, facing a 12-count indictment, including charges of conspiracy against the u.s. and money laundering. we have new reaction from the white house this morning as reports surfaced that the president is fuming. and social media giants are gearing up to testify before congress. among them, facebook set to reveal that russia-linked content may have reached as many as 126 million voters during the campaign. and a boat goes under throwing him into the water and an unlikely rescuer who jumped into actio

after pleading not guilty to a 12-count indictment. then rick gates, you see him thay there facing the same charges also pleading not guilty. >> foreign policy adviser papadopoulos is charged with lying to the fbi. >> court papers show that he acknowledged that a professor told him the russians had dirt on hillary clinton. he talked about trying to arrange a meeting between then candidate trump and russian president vladimir putin, and he said several trump officials knew he was talking to the russians about helping that campaign at the time. so much scandal there in washington. >> and president trump is reportedly fuming over these indictments. sources say he woke up early and watched it all early on the

>> and the white house is down playing the role of the president's former advisers. here's jonathan karl. >> reporter: the white house was blindsided by this news. sources tell abc news the president had no advanced notice from the special counsel. his tweet dismissed the indictment of the man who ran his campaign. sorry, but this is years ago. before paul manafort was part of the trump campaign. why aren't crooked hillary and the dems the focus? also, there is no collusion. and, in fact, there is nothing about collusion or the campaign in the manafort indictment. what the president didn't know is there was another shoe to drop. special counsel mueller later revealing his plea deal with george papadopoulos, the campaign foreign policy adviser who was in fact talking with russians about getting dirt on hillary clinton. >> we've been saying from day one there's no evidence of trump/russia collusion and

changes that at all. >> but it is about the campaign, it is specifically about the campaign. >> it has to do would his failure to tell the truth. >> reporter: sanders said papadopoulos had an extremely limited role in the campaign. but again, there he is, three seats from donald trump. >> look, this individual was the member of a volunteer advisory council that met one time over the course of a year. he was not paid by the campaign. >> reporter: it's not the first time the white house has sought to down play the role of someone on the campaign. this is what they said about paul manafort who spent five months on team trump, including three as campaign chairman. >> obviously, there's this discussion of paul manafort who played an i have limited role for a limited amount of time. john, hold on. can you stop interrupting other people? jonathan, somebody's asking a question. it's not your press briefing. >> reporter: the president himself is making the case that the real subject of

investigation should be hillary clinton. the president tweeting sunday there is so much guilt by democrats, clinton, and now the facts are pouring out. do something! and what will the president do if mueller continues to next on his associates and not clinton's? is he going to rule out once and for all firing robert mueller? >> the president said last week, i believe it was last week, and i've said several times before, there's no intention or plan to make any changes in regards to the special counsel. >> reporter: the white house was also asked whether or not the president would consider issuing pardons for paul manafort or rick gates. the answer was interesting. she said, quote, i think we should let the process play through before we start looking at those steps. in other words, the white house is not ruling out issuing pardons. jonathan karl, abc news, the white house. >> and a hearing for man fort a

thursday. >> they're restricted to their homes and must check in with the marshals every day. >> abc news weighs in on the idea that the investigation will end soon. >> i don't think there's any way to look at that plea agreement with papadopoulos and conclude this is going to end anytime soon. when you read through the statement of facts, the agreement, it is clear they cut that deal so they could investigate others, so this could be part of a broader investigation. >> and dan says with papadopoulos, robert mueller is going for the little fish first and may also be trying to put pressure on manafort and gates to get information on other key trump associates. >> powerful washington lobbyist, podesta is stepping down. he lobbied on behalf of his ukrainian sclients

managed hillary clinton's campaign. and clinton herself isn't commenting directly. she was in the chicago area yesterday promoting her book. at one event, all she would say about the indictments was that the book contains a great ch chapter about russia but later she said president trump is not looking out. a top facebook lawyer will tell senators a russian group posted more than 80,000 times during and after the election. the content may have reached up to 126 million people. and twitter also plans to tell senators it found and shut down nearly 120 accounts. that number of accounts is 14 times larger than twitter reported three weeks ago. and google is

had limited use by that group. and another blow to president trump, blocking transgender people from serving in the military. here's abc's aaron katersky. >> reporter: the ban was partially blocked by a federal court judge on monday. though part of the white house memo that stops government funds from being used for sexual reassignment surgeries stands. the ruling came in a lawsuit jane doe v donald trump, which was brought by several active duty service members. president trump tweeted please be advised that the united states government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the u.s. military. our military, the tweet went on, cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs that transgender in the military would entail. it came as a surprise to some
