initially. but that has changed within the hour. we understand that a driver started yelling and pulled out what is a fake gun but got back into his home depot marked pick up truck and that is when the police say he mowed down several people on nash bike path. hitting and killing several people. the latest number again are seven dead and at least 15 hurt. the driver was shot by police and is in custody. f.b.i. on the ground. governor cuomo on the way to the scene. president trump has been briefed. we are standing by for an update from police. we understand the update will happen in about 15 minutes. as soon as we it does, we will bring it to you live and the headlines out of it. michelle marsh from the "live desk." alison: keep us posted with new information. we'll bring you

podesta accused the president of perpetrating a "big lie." alison: new information tonight about the impact of three major hurricanes and the wildfires on all of our wallets. nancy chen is in the satellite center with some of the numbers for us. nancy: the head of the federal emergency management agency fema testifying before congress today. brock long told the senate panel that the united states is spending more than $200 million a day in response to hurricane harvey, irma and maria and the wildfires in california. 25 million americans were impacted by the natural disasters in the space of 50 days. right now more than 4 million are registered for the emergency aid and they predict more money will be needed than the $52 billion in the emergency relief allocated. he is working to power to be restored for puerto rico. 57

u.s. history. when a man started shooting from the las vegas hotel room to a crowd gathered at a music festival below. 58 people died. hundreds more were injured. we have good news to tell you about a person injured in the shooting. tina frost, this beautiful young woman is out of intensive care in baltimore. the anne arundel woman is able to write on a white board and she is trying to walk on her own. frost was shot in the head and lost one eye in that massacre. michelle: we are tracking breaking news out of new york city. as many as seven people are dead. 15 are hurt. we want to point out how the language surrounding this incident is changing as time goes by. now initially to walk you through where we have been and where we are heading. initially police in new york city calling this a road rage incident. but the police now saying the driver made a purposeful turn into that crowd of people on a

mike: a thrilling day where the operators gave up the work routine to perform a dance routine for students at the martin luther king junior elementary school. saying it's spooky not to know the address. >> they will call and say i live in washington, d.c. or a certain neighborhood. or i live in northwest. >> the staff went all out to decorate the call center for the event. even with the decklations and the costumes the operators were receiving emergency calls. after their call center tour the children practiced calling 911. >> 911. >> in case of an emergency away from home they were also taught how to find or figure out an address looking at the mail and signs outside or asking an adult. >> teach my son in kindergarten. i had a jingle where i would teach him the address. that is how he learned it. i did the same with the telephone

from governor cuomo and mayor de blasio, bill sweeney of the new york director in charge of the f.b.i. offices is up here, too. members of the executive staff. sy vance and members of state police. i want to say today there was a loss of innocent life in lower manhattan. the dead and the injured were going about their days. heading home from work or school and enjoying the afternoon sun on bicycles. this is a tragedy of the greatest magnitude. for many people and families in new york city and beyond today. i want to commend response from the nypd officer on post near the location who stopped the carnage moments after it began. also the work of the first responders including the fire department and the e.m.s. personnel surely helped save additional livings. i will give more of a chronology in a couple of minutes. i'd like to introduce mayor de blasio. >> thank you, commissioner. this is a very painful day in our city. horrible tragedy

side. let me be clear based on the information we have at the moment this was an act of terror. and particular liquoredly act of terror aimed at innocent -- particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians who had no idea what was about to hit them. we at this moment based on the information we have, we know of eight innocent people who have lost their lives. over a dozen more are injured. we know that this action was intended to break our spirit but we know new yorkers are strong, new yorkers are resilient and our spirit will never be moved by an about of violence and an act meant to intimidate us. we have been tested before as a city very near the site of today's tragedy.

in, in the face of these kinds of actions. we will respond as we always do. we will be undeterred. i want to thank everyone at the nypd, all our first responders for the extraordinary efforts in the midst of the tragedy starting with the officer who stopped this tragedy from continuing. all the first responders who came to the aid of those who were injured. the investigation is underway. to get all the facts and what we will tell you today of course will be preliminary. we know we will get down to bottom of what happened. i want to ask all new yorkers, all americans to keep the families of those lost in your thoughts and prayers. they will need our

manhattan on a beautiful fall day. they are not returning home. the shock and the pain is going to be very real. our thoughts and our prayers are with all of them. our first responders did an extraordinary job. the nypd, fdny, the f.b.i., new york state police, e.m.s. we have the finest security on the globe. to see that in action proves that again. the new terrorist tactic which they have called for publicly are the lone wolfs who commit an act of terror. this is all preliminary. it's only been a couple of hours but there is no evidence to suggest a wider plot or a wider scheme. but the actions of one individual who meant to

pain and harm and probably death and the resulting terror. that was the purpose. we will be vigilant. more police everywhere. you will see them in the airport, you will see them in the tunnels. it's not because of any evidence of an ongoing threat or an additional threat. it is just out of vigilance and out of caution. the truth is new york is an international symbol of freedom and democracy. that is what we are. we are proud of it. that also makes us a target for those people who oppose those concepts. we have lived with this before. we felt the pain before. we feel the

we go forward together. we go forward stronger than ever. we are not going to let them win. if we change our lives and contort ourselves to them, then they win and we lose. we will go about our business. again there is no on going threat. there is no evidence of that at this time. there is no need to have undue anxiety. you will see more security forces but that is only because it's an abundance of caution, not a symbol of anything else. there will be continued investigation. and justice will be done. but again to those we lost, they are in our thoughts and our prayers. to the first responders, thank you, thank you, thank you f

you put your life on the line every day. you do it better than anyone else. to new yorkers, be new yorkers and live your life. don't let them change us or deter us in any manner, shape or form. thank you. >> thank you. i have to go through the chronology. i'll have questions but we are not going too deep into it. it is only two hours. after i get done with the chronology, dan will talk about the injuries. a male driving rented home depot pickup truck entered the bicycle path and began driving southbound striking a number of pedestrians and bicyclists along the route. chambers street, the truck collided with a school bus injuring two adults and two children.

driver of the truck, 29-year-old male exited the vehicle brandishing two handguns. the uniformed police officer assigned to the first precinct confronted the suspect and shot him in the abdomen. the suspect was wounded and transported to the hospital. paintball and pellet gun were recovered at the scene. the suspect identity is not being released at this time pending further investigation. at this point there were eight fatalities reported in connection to the incident. there are several people injured. the fire department will discuss that. dan? >> thank you. six people died. they were pronounced at the scene between housen street and chambers street. they were all males. two others were transported in

pronounced at the home. we transported 11 people all with serious but at this moment not life threatening injuries. they are what you expect as a truck went at high speed down that bicycle path. and struck bicyclists and pedestrians. there may billion more injuries as people self- evacuated. we will do that as we continue our survey but that is the patient count and the deaths as we know it now. >> at this point we will take some questions. miles? >> as you know through the shield program we do have very wide outreach. we have just under 20,000 members in the private sector. after isis, maggie: came out with the issue about two years ago around this time of year suggesting car attacks, you will recall one of the targets they suggested was the thanksgiving day parade. we went and did extensive outreach to the truck rental business. we visited over 148 truck rental locations in this area. the obvious ones, uhaul, rider, home depot and talked about suspicious indicators and way to come forward after attacks on the german christmas market and nice. we repeated that two more times with telephonic contact, e-mail or going to the same place. the industry has had a high level of awareness of this

eight people are dead. 11 people have serious and non-life threatening injuries after the truck mowed down people on a bike path in lower manhattan. it happened this afternoon after 3:00 on a bike path that runs along the west side highway. city officials believe it's deliberate. bill de blasio on the act of terror. sources telling abc news the suspect screamed "allahu akbar." abc news reporting that the suspect is identified as 29-year-old man from florida. the truck which was a rental from home depot hit a school bus after running down the bike path hurting two adults and two children there. >> today there is a loss of innocent life in lower manhattan. dead and injured going about their days enjoying the sun.
