"abc7 news at 4:00" starts right now. alison: a 3-year-old was found beaten to death in his bedroom. jonathan: ultimately his mother was charged with his murder. her trial was this week. nancy: prosecutors say she did it. her attorney says it was her ex-boyfriend. d.c. bureau chief sam ford has the bombshell developments from court as the ex took the stand here. sam? sam: yes, nancy, well this trial started on monday. today the mother's ex-boyfriend testified that he first found out what happened by watching -- rather by looking at the channel 7 website. and then learning what happened, fearing street justice he fled d.c. getting as far away as nebraska. at the trial today where many of the mother's

family, her ex-boyfriend testified today that one of her friends put out on facebook a flyer of him saying he killed the child. he ran, he said, and marshals quickly caught him. it was june of 2014 when 3-year-old xavier was found dead on his room on pomeroy road. on trial for his murder is his mother. now 28-year-old frances lyles who has two other children. xavier was beaten so severely he died of internal injuries. left so long rig -- rigmortis set in. the defense attorney is arguing that belt did it. with belt on the stand, they played phone recordings of belt in a prison stay asking the mother each time about the child and hearing belt was on the phone, the child begging to talk to him. the same calls the mother could be heard ye

children and telling belt about how she had beaten him. the defense raised the question whether belt was on p.c.p. he denied it was the case. and insisted he didn't beat anybody's children including five of his own. it's raised the issue of young mother cursing and beating their children of child abuse. the prosecutor cynthia wright said at one point of lyles she loved her son but she was cruel and atrocious. reporting live from d.c. superior court, i'm sam ford abc7 news. jonathan: you can see the original reporting through the investigation and the trial online by downloading the wjla abc7 news app. you will find it on google play and the app store. a deadly fire still burning this morning. the home was supposed to be empty. inside two bodies were found. fire, a.t.f. investigators are sorting through what is left of the house trying to figure out how the fire started.

maryland bureau chief brad bell is in seat pleasant with the developing story. brad? brad: that is one mystery, how it started. the other one is who was inside. look at this. this house is gutted. what is unusual if you look through the windows there is nothing in there. no furniture, no nothing. this was a vacant home. two people down dead upstairs. in the predawn hours the fire grew big before anyone could call 911. the next door neighbor boone was stunned how fast it spread. >> i reacted to fast it didn't see how bad it was. the firefighters thought it would be a quick job until they found two bodies upstairs. that's when

ordered former trump campaign chairman paul manafort and a business associate to remain under house arrest. the judge also set a tentative trial date in april for manafort and rick gates. the two pled not guilty to a 12-count indictment on monday in connection to the special counsel's russia investigation. another hearing is scheduled for monday. jonathan: a military judge is deciding how to punish bowe bergdahl who walked off the post in afghanistan in 2009. he apologized to the service members injured trying to find him. nancy: "7 on your side" breaking down the house g.o.p. tax plan. some will pay less and others more. the standard child tax credit

we are learning he attacked his wife with an axe. she is expected to survive. he was found with injuries he caused to himself with a chainsaw. he later died. neighbors witnessed all of this. >> spilled out in the front yard. people heard screaming. they called the emergency. [audio interruption] jonathan: they don't know what caused this man to go on the attack. nancy: a second arrest in the case of a pregnant woman set on fire. jonathan miller was taken into custody accused of working with laquinn phillips who is also charged in this case. mikeandrea grinage-parks was burned severely and

birth to a baby 7 weeks early and the baby went home. miller is charged with attempted murder. nancy: on alert now in new york. two days after the terror attack that killed eight, maggie rulli is in new york where the man who was captured alive is admitting to it all. >> in the aftermath of the terror attack, the city is still shaken. >> it's scary to think that happened near the school. >> the suspect barreling down a well-used bike path in lower manhattan. neighborhood filled with families and schools. the community is determined to be resilient. >> we decided to wear black and show support of the community. we'll get through it. >> the schools are back in session. this is the high school and right here less than 50 yards away that bike path where many students say they saw the terror unfolding firsthand. the city's mayor stopped by the school today to offer his support for the

the fact that new yorkers were undeterred. the message that came through loud and clear here is that everyone had each other's backs. >> the city got a visit from attorney general jeff sessions making sure that new york knows they are not alone. >> we are all in it together. maggie: for the first time we are getting a look at the former life of 29-year-old sayfullo saipov in uzbekistan. where he lived before moving to the u.s. in 2010. most recently saipov was living in new jersey with his life and three children. saipov is charged with terrorism. authorities say he has given a full confession. the city seems determined to show its resilience. the memorial here continues to grow. we have even learned that one of the students who is injured in this attack made it a point to be back at school the next day. in new york, maggie rulli, abc7 news. jonathan: new today an arrest in what appears to be a random and a deadly shooting at a wal-mart north of denver.

at an apartment complex a few hours ago. he is accused of walking in the store, taking out a gun and shooting three people. investigators don't at this point have any idea what the motive was. alison: back at home now, abc7 getting you ready for the big virginia gube the moral election. it's -- gubernatorial election. it's five days away. we told you about the voter anny but it does not stop big money flowing in the campaign. richard reeve takes us to the podium and is following the money. >> thank you for being here. richard democrat northam north, republican ed gillespie. >> their vision for the future of virginia is. richard: both campaigning and raising big bucks. >> it's expensive to run for governor. richard: $11 million by northam and $10 million by gillespie. >> no average joe could just get the money. richard: a necessary evil in a battleground state in a close race. >> money matters in a state

her cigarette and the other taking her dog out for a walk when they heard cries for help. 5:00 in the frederick neighborhood. police got here and two people were on the ground in the parking lot. blood was everywhere. we are told that the male suspect hit both victims and crashed the car on a grass island 50 feet away. the man bolted. the officers did catch him nearby. he is now at central booking. neighbors tell us the man is related to a couple who lives on the street. the police have not released the names of anyone involved or a motive. the scene so grisly frederick county used a street sweeper and tanker truck to clean the roadway. >> he got out of the car. he started like walking around a little bit. threw his hands up like that. and ran that way. >> bo
