and his growing nuclear program. you see the president and the first lady arriving moments ago. he pointed to the u.s. firepower in the area but is not ruling out negotiations. >> reporter: the president's wednesday began with a big surprise that wasn't meant to be. one the showman president seemed to promote hours before. >> we're going to have an exciting day tomorrow for many reasons. >> reporter: he devised a secret plan to visit korea's demilitarized zone by helicopter, inches from north korea. the white house had said for weeks he wasn't going to visit the heavily fortified border as other leaders had done, calling it cliched. this morning, marine one lifted off for the border, but the weather had other plans. heavy mist and fog forcing military pilots to turn around. president trump waiting in his limo another hour for the weather to improve.

press secretary sarah sanders ready to go, seen wearing camouflage. but the plan was called off, the plan exposed. his next stop at the assembly couldn't be delayed. standing now 30 miles from north korea he delivered a message aimed directly at pyongyang. >> the regime has interpreted america's past restraint as weakness. this would be a fatal miscalculation. this is a very different administration. do not underestimate us. and do not try us. >> reporter: the speech included a plug for his new jersey golf course. but avoided nicknames like rocket man as he outlined a way forward for kim jong un. >> the weapons you are acquiring are not making you safer. they are putting your regime in grave danger. >> reporter: the president said he's open to negotiation, but

only if complete denuclearization is on the table and he called on south korea and -- russia and china to stop all support of the north. as the president arrived in beijing moments ago. >> and a couple thoughts there. it's exactly a year ago today that the president was elected in that surprise victory. he did not discuss putting north korea on the list of state sponsors of terror, something he could have mentioned. north korea spoke out saying we don't care what the mad dog may utter. sounds like they're taking it great. >> it was kind of odd to see sarah sanders in camouflage. >> she was ready. >> i'm going to the dmz. well, you were talking about the election. democrats are smiling this morning after a string of high-profile election day wins. first the new jersey governor's race, phil murphy defeated the republican lieutenant governor.

exit polls show murphy decidedly won among independent voters. in virginia, the lieutenant governor beat ed gillespie. by nine percentage points. the win was fueled by overwhelming support by young voters and women. he said now is the time to bring the state together. >> whether you voted for me or not, we are all virginians. and i hope, i hope to earn your confidence and support as we move forward. the virginia way is to work together, to get results. >> northam successfully tied his opponent to the president though he never campaigned for gillespie. trump seemed to take a parting shot at gillespie from south korea. the president tweeted, ed gillespie worked hard but did not support me or what i stand for.

>> so what does this mean going forward? let's check in with rick klein. good morning, rick. >> this was a repudiation of president trump and of trumpism. sweeping victories by democrats in new jersey and virginia. and also in races across the country. this is going to go a long way to rebuilding the democratic beverage -- bench and building some momentum and a boost of energy into a year that's been pretty morbid. it is easy to overread these results. we live in an era of waves where the waves crash back and forth over each other. president trump has suffered a major defeat, the biggest defeat politically of his presidency. but that doesn't put him out. it means the democrats are positioned to take advantage of some of the weaknesses in the trump coalition, but it does not mean they are set to take control of the midterm elections. it had be --

massacre wasn't devin kelley's first time at the church. officials tell us kelley attended the church's fall festival on halloween, october 31st. and when he came back on sunday he wore a skeleton mask over his face, blasting off hundreds of rounds. in the deadliest shooting in texas history. >> there's a dead body right there. >> the wilson county sheriff's office arrived within four minutes. i can tell you four minutes is a long time during an active shooter situation. >> reporter: for the approximately 50 church goers, it felt like an eternity. was he aiming at them? >> aiming at them, shooting, like ta, ta, ta, ta. >> reporter: the pastor said when he met kelley at the halloween function he instinctively did not like him, thought he may be dangerous, but he thought how do you turn someone away from your own church, and it's chilling to think that kelley would end up killing many of the people he met that night. matt gutman, sutherland springs,

>> and members of congress want to know why they failed to notify the fbi of the shooter's history. it appears it's not an isolated problem. the armed services have a 30% failure rate in submitting the fingerprints of convicted felons to the fbi. the pentagon began an investigation into this last february. a spokesman says it is still under way. and one of the youngest victims, ryland remains in the hospital. he was shot in the arm, the leg and stomach. look at that face right there. his cousin has started a go fund me page. to raise money to pay for his hospital bills. so far the total is more than $84,000. we have no doubt it will go up quickly. >> wishing him a speedy recovery for sure. turning now to the weather. fall has arrived in the northeast with a vengeance. a cold front brought cooler temperatures across the region, including snow from pennsylvania to new england. but a second cold front is on

new video just in showing an engine fire on board a hawaiian airlines plane as it landed in seattle. it was quickly put out by the plane's own fire extinguishing system. no one was injured. there were no passengers on board. this was a short flight. from another airport in the seattle area. and the plane is now being checked out. and as the president arrives in china, three ucla players have been arrested for shoplifting. >> the team is there to play its opening game of the season this friday. the three players, including liangelo ball, the ynger brother of lonzo ball were detained and they were questioned about allegedly stealing from a
