two people died in the fire. they are trying to figure out the motive. alison: now to a story you will see only on 7. 21 years ago, t.w.a. flight 800 exploded off the coast of new york. most people don't know that the plane from one of the worst aviation disasters in our history is largely reassembled and in our area. sam sweeney explains the plane helps keep all of us safer. >> a 747 jetliner is missing over the ocean off the inlet on the south shore of long island. >> there are reports of a very large explosion in the area. sam: the bobbing wreckage. >> no survivors found. sam: the sobbing family members. >> we are all shocked. >> it's hard to forget the images. >> there were 212 passengers. >> the crash of t.w.a. flight 800 grabbed the world's attention. 230 people died. it became the ntsb's longest, most complicated and expensive investigation n

lasting four years and costing $40 million. what many people don't know is the 747 sits in this ashburn warehouse on a satellite campus of george washington university. >> i think that a lot of people aren't aware that we do have the t.w.a. 800 wreckage here. they also aren't aware of how important is it to us at the ntsb and how we use it to train investigators. sam: more than a thousand people come to study the t.w.a. 800 every year. the investigation produced safety changes that made air travel safer for all of us. including major changes with the fuel tank flammability and old wiring due to the aging. >> many students see it and they are in awe. it takes their breath away. when i view the wreckage i think of the victims that were involved. that is a great motivator to make sure that we are doing a good job at our job as investigators

transportation safety. sam: the final report found the probably cause was an explosion in the center wing fuel tank. investigators believe damaged wires short circuited outside the tank and sent excessive voltage in to the tank. t.w.a. flight 800 is used as a training tool, out of respect for the families the national transportation safety board will never allow anyone to take a picture with the plane and no photos are ever able to be taken inside the aircraft. 98% of the plane was recovered from the ocean, including the mangled passenger seats a and today they are back in their numbered rows. >> for a couple of years after the accident the family and group was active and they came to visit the wreckage often. they would leave momentos in the seat for the loved ones. >> today's family members can visit the plane as often as they would like. >> the building is dedicated to the families and the victims involved in transportation accidents. from tragedy we gain
