abc's matt gutman has more. >> reporter: the gunman had already killed four people by the time he started firing into the rancho tehama elementary school right during morning dropoff. >> one of the teachers came running around the building. >> reporter: a witness says he took cover inside his child's kindergarten classroom as the gunman shattered windows, wounded one child and terrified the rest. >> they saw their friends shot up on the ground, they started balling. >> reporter: the shooter fired in multiple locations for 45 minutes, terrorizing residents in this rural area, about 100 miles from sacramento, all residents ordered to shelter in place. >> it was very clear at the onset we had a subject that was randomly picking targets. >> reporter: police say the

went on that shooting spree throughout the community, pumping this truck full of bullets, wounding a mother and her child. a neighbor says the shooting began when the suspect killed his roommate. the suspect was known to shoot guns late at night and had threatened flint in the past. >> this guy was crazy, and's been threatening us. >> reporter: by the time it was all over, seven different crime scenes, five people killed, including the shooter and at least ten more wounded. >> the suspected shooter is deceased by law enforcement bullets. >> reporter: apparently, he'd had multiple recent run ins with the law, including a domestic violence incident and a look-running dispute with a neighbor. they think he was out on bond. he had no license to occasiony a gun, three weapons with him including that long gun and two handguns. the four people killed were all adults, but ten people still hospitalized.

>> quite a scene in red bluff. to politics now and alabama senate candidate roy moore speaking very little about the sexual assault allegations against him during an appearance at a church. this taking place hours ago, and moore said the controversy swirling around him is part of a spiritual battle going on in american politics. >> obviously, i've made a few people mad. i'm the only one that can unite democrats and republicans. they've done everything they could, and now they're together to try to keep me from going to washington. >> in an attempt to ramp up the pressure on moore, the republican national committee has ended a joint fund raising agreement with him. and now senate majority leader mitch mcconnell is the latest floating the idea of a write-in candidate. mcconnell says that attorney general jeff sessions may be the only person who could win that wa

chaos of the trump campaign for his hazy memory about russian contacts. sessions faced more than five hours of testimony on capitol hill. he insists he never lied to congress and denied that he's doing the president's political bidding. jennae norman has the details. >> reporter: the nation's top law enforcement official facing tough questions, forced to defend himself. facing questions about whether he lied last month when he testified before senators that he wasn't aware of trump campaign contacts with russians. >> the trump campaign had contact with the russians through mr. papadopoulos and others. >> reporter: a guilty ply from george papadopoulos revealed at this 2016 meeting sessions was aware of papadopoulos offering to arrange a meeting between donald trump and vladimir putin. >> i will not accept and reject accusations that i have ever lied. that is a lie! i believe that i wanted to make

authorized to represent the campaign with the russian government. >> reporter: and questions swirling around new revelations sessions authorized federal prosecutors to examine allegations that donations to the clinton foundation influenced the obama administration and decide whether there's any merit to appoint a special counsel. a move that has some wondering whether the independent justice department is caving to pressure from the president. >> is it common for the leader of the country to order the criminal justice system to retaliate against his political opponent? >> the department of justice can never be used to retaliate politically against opponents, and that would be wrong. >> reporter: and it wasn't just democrats with tough questions. one republican congressman wanted to know why no special counsel has been appointed to investigate the actions of hillary clinton and

the attorney general saying there would need to be a factual basis and proper standards met for that to happen. on capitol hill, janay norman, abc news. president trump is back at the white house expected to make a major announcement as soon as today. he declared his tour of asia a tremendous success in his words. he said he made a lot of progress shaping trade deals. the president said he spoke with the chinese leader on behalf of three ucla basketball players accused of shoplifting in china. those players are now back on american soil. the three, including the brother of an l.a. laker rookie, lonzo ball, were released without charges filed against them. they're scheduled to make a public statement with school officials later this morning. the school has been deciding whether to take disciplinary action. the pentagon confirms that an active duty service member

has undergone gender reassignment surgery. the surgery was paid for by the military's health coverage, because a doctor declared it to be medically necessary. and supporters of same-sex marriage were celebrating in australia this morning after a public survey found major support for legalization. 62% of respondents expressed support for marriage equality. the poll puts legalizing gay marriage on the australian parliament as agenda. lawmakers could take action this year. the northwest is being drenched again. part of what's described as a fire hose of moisture. the heavy rain has already begun to fall across the seattle area. but the wind's latest round won't be as bad as earlier this week. it took several attempts before this flight was able to land at sea-tac in seattle. a passenger recorded the turbulence on the flight from portland. can you see the plane bouncing all over the

six feet tall. >> this has got to stop. we need to catch this killer before we have to notify one more family that one of their loved ones is dead. >> reporter: the latest victim, 60 year old ronald felton on his way to fied the homeless at his church. he enjoyed helping others. >> i love him. he's going to be in my heart. >> reporter: for weeks, police asking the public to help them identify this person of interest, spotted on multiple cameras, near the scene of the first of three murders in october. those victims killed at night, blocks apart, shot at random. fell top now killed in that same neighborhood. we spoke to a woman who heard the gunshots. she asked that we not show her face. she already has a stun gun for protection but is thinking about buying a real gun. >> i think it's the best way, but it's scary, quite scary, so. >> reporter: police clearing this neighborhood and reopening the street where the

took place. residents are allowed to leave their home, but they want residents to look through surveillance and make sure any guns or weapons are accounted for. and we're getting a look at a violent confrontation in a botched drug raid. officers raided a home, completely unaware that they were actually facing undercover cops from the 12th precinct, posing as drug dealers. the police chief is admitting a brake down in communication. luckily, no officers were seriously hurt and an investigation is under way to determine whether any criminal charges should be filed. >> that's so weird. >> they were both trying -- >> yeah. >> a drug bust on each other, not realizing they were facing fellow officers. >> whoo, luckily, nobody fired any shots. ? th >> that could have been very dangerous. the parents in richmond,
