"7 on your side" with the secondary health issues that can come with the disease that so many overlook.

michelle: for the 29 million living with diabetes it is common to experience mental health issues. new effort is underway to increase awareness and get patients the help they need. >> monitoring her blood sugar levels to inspecting every food label. emily says managing her type i diabetes is a never ending and an overwhelming process. >> making so many decisions

this is hugely stressful. >> that is not all she has faced since being diagnosed at age 14. >> i had body image issues, depression and anxiety and that coincided to make a perfect storm. michigan her mental health issues are not unusual for people with diabetes. >> it's something that is very common in those with diabetes. it's nothing to be ashamed of. michelle: people with both type i and type ii diabetes are 20% more likely to have anxiety and twice as likely to have depression. a publish studied found female patients 12 to 19 with type i diabetes are 2.4 times more likely to have an eating disorder. doctors often overlook the issues leading to additional stress on diabetes patients. >> this may impair the ability to manage the disease. if you don't mange

lead to complications. >> so the american diabetes association launched a training program to increase awareness and improve treatment. >> we partnered with the psychological association to form continual education program to help the mental health providers understand complexity of the disease. this is as much part of a treatment as provided medication or having adequate diet or getting enough activity. >> i'm doing well. >> emily goes to a therapist or psychiatrist that helped her get the anxiety under control. as a nurse educator herself she encourages her patients to seek the health they need. fully'm a big proponent of therapy. i think the medication helped. michelle: so far, 120 mental health providers have gone through the training. they will be listed in a new registry coming out in january. announcer: r
