a possible breakthrough in the d.b. cooper hijacking. 46 years later a letter that could prove the man who jumped out of a plane with $200,000 in ransom survived after all. and how did she do that? she scales the side of a building while performing at the american music awards. we talked to her choreographer about how she pulled it all off. a good monday morning. we'll start off with breaking news this morning. the death of the man many called the face of evil. >> yeah, the convicted killer and cult leader charles manson died of natural causes at the age of 83 overnight. he and his followers terrorized los angeles in the summer of 1969 with a string of cold-blooded murders. >> abc's marci gonzalez takes a look back. >> he was the mastermind of some of america's most

murders, the creator of a killer crime family. >> i'm a convict. i'm an outlaw. i'm a rebel. i'm not a sunday school teacher. >> for decades he occupied a lone place in american pop culture, the thing of nightmares. a man who convinced other people to commit murder for him. >> you have them thinking you were jesus christ. how did you do that? >> just being myself. all men are jesus christ. >> reporter: abc's diane sawyer interviewed him in 1993. >> i never told anybody to do anything other than what they wanted to do. >> reporter: in the late 1960s he formed a commune and became obsessed with "helter-skelter" and in august of 1969 he ordered four of his followers to go to a home in beverly hills and kill everyone inside. in all, five people died including actress sharon tate. wife of director roman polanski, she was 8 1/2

breaking overnight a medical helicopter has crashed in arkansas killing three crew members. that chopper went down in a remote area southeast of little rock. emergency responders had a hard time reaching the scene. once they arrived they found the helicopter engulfed in flames. >> those medevac helicopters carrying excessive amount of few, a lot more than an act pilot would and that does give concerns about putting a fire out. it makes it more difficult to put the fires out. >> no patients were on board the helicopter but federal investigators are heading to the scene. the ems unit that owned the helicopter says it is devastated by the sudden loss of three of our team members. a search for the suspects is under way this morning following the death of a border patrol agent in texas. incident happened in the state's big bend area along the swiss border with mexico. agent rahillo martinez and his partner seriously injured and the fbi has taken over the investigation but not

details on what happened to the agents or the nature of the injuries. president trump did tweet about this overnight saying we will seek out and bring to justice those responsible adding we will and must build the wall. the white house is working to convince senator susan collins and several other republicans to support the latest tax cut plan. mick mulvaney says the president is open to scrapping a provision in the bill that would repeal the obamacare mandate which requires everyone to buy health insurance but steve mnuchin suggests it will stay and that's a sticking point for senator collins. >> the biggest mistake was putting in a provision from the affordable care act into the senate bill that's not in the house bill and i hope that will be dropped or that bill introduced by alexander and murray and bill nelson and myself will be adopted to mitigate the impact of those provisions. >> republicans cannot afford to lose more than two

bill. senators bob corker, john mccain and rand paul have expressed reservations. a critical deadline in the crisis in zimbabwe. 93-year-old robert mugabe has been ordered to step down today or face impeachment. this comes after he refused to resign during a televised speech. the ruling party has already elected a new leader. there is a bit of political turmoil in germany where the chancellor, angela merkel is promising to maintain stability after talks to form a coalition government collapsed overnight. one of the parties walked out amid disagreements over migration and climate policy raising the possibility of new elections. turning now to the weather forecast. heavy wins here in new york sent scaffolding swinging around the front of a building on sunday. a different set of scaffolding also came crashing to the ground they are a subway station. bystanders came to help clearing the wreckage. sick injured

incident and now a closer look at your weather for this monday morning. >> good morning, lake-effect snow still affecting western new york, upstate new york area, possibly as much as 6 to 12 inches but another push of cold air overtakes the great lakes region and the ohio valley region by wednesday and overtakes the northeast by thursday. along the west coast a new storm will create localized flooding along the coast. wind gusts up to 50 to 60 miles per hour. travel weather for tuesday looking good for most of the country with the exception of the northwest. i'm accuweather meteorologist paul williams. well, coming up right here we remember veteran actor and familiar face from "the cosby show." >> a deadly mystery at sea. a boat all alone spinning out of control. no more walk-ins.

the coast guard says one person is dead and another missing after this unmanned boat was spotted off california's half moon bay coast. at one point it was too dangerous for the coast guard to even approach the spinning boat. they eventually let it run out of gas before towing it away. an investigation is now under way. now to the desperate search for a cop killer near pittsburgh. officer brian shaw was on a routine traffic stop when he was shot in the chest. police say the suspect got out of his vehicle and ran away after shaw pulled him over considered armed and dangerous. you see the suspect here. shaw was just 25 years old. he was on the force less than a year. a reward of more than $43,000 is now offered in this case. and to baltimore where police have

and killed a detective there. sean suiter was shot in the head while investigating a triple homicide last week. the reward for information leading to an arrest in now nearly $250,000. troops have been restricted to base and banned from drinking alcohol after a crash that killed a japanese driver near okinawa. witnesses say he slammed into a man that was in the truck. the marine's blool alcohol level was three times the legal limit. officials are concerned the crash could fuel more opposition to the presence of troops on the island. actor jeffrey tambor says he will not return for season phi of his amazon series "transparent" after sexual harassment allegations against him. he strongly denies them from his former assistant and transgender actress van barnes but in the statement he says given the politicized atmosphere on the set he just

good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: hey, kendis and diane. good morning. time is running out for the 44 crew members on board this argentinean submarine. the u.s. is joining the effort to find it before it's too late. for days rescue crews in argentina have been trying to find 44 crew members on board an argentinean submarine missing for almost a week and now stormy weather is holding up their efforts. the argentine navy lost contact with the "ara san juan" lost contact and it shows the close quarters sailors work in in because of the particular type of submarine, they're dependent on the batteries within that submarine. every hour that goes by gives them less and less chance of surviving. >> reporter: the argentine navy says the submarine was on a routine trip from a base

ushuala and a fire may have knocked out power on the sub cutting off communication systems but someone from the ship may have been trying to make contact. the defense minister says seven failed emergency satellite calls went out on saturday. but cannot confirm they came from the "san juan" or pinpoint where the calls were made. >> normally in a submarine like this the proceed sure is to surface and use radio to communicate with its headquarters so because they have not heard from the submarine for so long it makes them worried. >> reporter: at least six nations are helping in the search for the sub. the u.s. navy sending in their most sophisticated rescue equipment that operates as deep as 2,000 feet. search units are focusing on what little information they have. estimating how fast the sub may have been traveling from its starting point and copying its same scheduled path in hopes of spotting it. diane, kendis. >> yeah, a lot of people holding out hope this morning.

washington, thanks, steph. three injured when a small plane crashed into a home in san show, california, it just missed power lines and rooftops before crashing into the garage and the pilot and two passengers injured. nobody in the house was hurt. the pilot reported a system failure before the crash. this one caught on camera flying dangerously low crashing onto a street landing on the side of the road among the trees. the pilot and his passenger walked away with no injuries. he was forced to reroute because of engine trouble. a new development in the d.b. cooper hijacking case. years ago a man named dan cooper hijacked a flight from portland to seattle and parachuted from the plane with $200,000 in ransom money and was never seen ben. film producer come told weather obtained a letter from the fbi files written by cooper after the hijacking reportedly. it proves that that hijacker
