little bit. but we do have a few serious notes to start off with. we have word from the navy that they're expanding the search for three sailors still missing after the crash of a plane off the coast of japan. >> it was on its way to the "uss ronald reagan." which is part of the pacific fleet. this is the sixth major incident involving that fleet this year alone. matt gutman with details. >> reporter: that massive search in the pacific for those three missing sailors. at 2:45 local time, the c-2 navy propeller plane ditched into the philippine sea as it made its way to the aircraft carrier, the "uss ronald reagan." it was about 500 miles off the coast of okinawa. the navy says that within minutes, eight personnel were plucked from the sea in good condition. but a huge search involving the ragen and

continued. >> the fact that we had so many people survive this mishap suggests that this was a deliberate act, that it was a ditching, some mechanical problem. >> reporter: this is the sixth major incident involving the seventh fleet this year. two previous collisions between navy stroi deer destroyers and merchant ships caused the deaths of 17 sailors. the captains of those ships and commander of the seventh fleet, vice admiral joseph aucoin have been relieved. they are saying engine failure might have brought that plane down, but right now, the u.s. navy is only saying it is investigating the cause of the crash. matt gutman, abc news. and the holiday means increased concerns about terrorism all over the world. >> the focus is on the macy's thanksgiving day parade. new tactics are in effect to protect the people expected to attend. barriers and sanitation trucks will block the streets. in an attempt to block a repeat

>> new york officials may also have a situation in europe on their minds. six people are under arrest in a ploot targeting a christmas market outside of paris. here's abc's gio benitez. >> reporter: new york city officials saying it's their strongest show of forth. an effort to protect the 3.5 million people expected to line the streets here for the thanksgiving day parade. >> each year we've been increasing our security. we want to make sure this is the most secure event going on. >> reporter: officers using new tactics. wands to check people at a central entrance for balloon inflating. creating lines stleretching blocks. more than 80 sanitation trucks packed with tons of sand and concrete barriers. this follows the truck attack in downtown manhattan that killed eight. police also relying on citizens for help. >> we're just watching around for peop,

background check system. we're getting new details in the killing of a baltimore police detective. the department confirms shawn suitor was murdered the day before he was set to give grand jury testimony in a case involving fellow officers. suitores suitor's colleagues are facing a federal indictment. details of the case have not been made public. baltimore police also revealed detective suitor was killed with his own gun after a struggle. interesting. $215,000 reward is being offered in that case. the former doctor who worked with usa gymnastics is facing decades in prison after pleading guilty to molesting young girls. larry nasser admitted sexual misconduct against at least seven girls. but at least 125 girls and women have accused him of molestation while he worked for usa gymnastics and michigan state university. he admitted that he took

all of this amid sexual abuse allegations from his former staffers. his attorney is holding up the claims against president trump as justification. he said if people were required to resign over allegations a lot of people would be out of work, including the president. he is now facing accusations from a third woman. attorney melanie sloan says he harassed and abused her about 20 years ago. a 2-year-old boy is recovering from a life saving kidney transplant. a.j. burris's dad is a perfect match and willing donor, but they made headlines when the hospital pushed back the surgery because of the father's criminal past. a.j. remained on the list and yesterday he received a kidney from another donor. doctors say he could be home in a week. that was such a bizarre case. his father was a perfect match for his son, and they wouldn't allow that transplant because of an alleged parole violation.

♪ ♪ i'm goin' up >> they're going up. one thing better than watching the parade live is actually being in it. >> oh, yeah. and abc's rachel scott found one way to be in the macy's thanksgiving day parade as long as you're willing to look the part. >> reporter: the floats and the balloons may steal the show, but the spirit of the macy's thanksgiving day parade can't come alive without a bit of clowning around. >> the clowns are really the only people in the parade that can actually go up and interact with all of the people on the street. they do a lot of silly skits and things like that, so it's a lot of fun for the audience.

>> reporter: each year, hundreds of people volunteer to be clowns. >> it's on my bucket list. every time i watched the thanksgiving day parade i wanted to be in it. >> we laugh every moment we're here. >> reporter: but before they hit the parade route, they must pass training. so i went down to macy's clown university. i decided to give it a try myself. we were divided into smaller groups for training. while they had to wait until thanksgiving day to put on their costumes, i got a head start. after a few run ins with my clown counterparts, it was time to switch it up. this one's a little too blocky. time for a costume change. much better. there were still some tricks i just couldn't get down. after some more practice, i started to get the hang of it. seemed like a perfect time for a confession. i actually have a fear of clowns.
