this morning and i'm sure you are as well. the two have rarely been seen in public. they just made their first public appearance in september and so many sharing their excitement for the happy couple this morning dough let's get right to our chief foreign correspondent terry moran with the latest on the big announcement. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, guys. this is an announcement that has been long expected. rumors swirling for weeks but it's still big news and happy news. this is a once upon a time tale, a very modern love story that's both full of royal tradition and very 21st century. this morning the world's most eligible royal is off the market. prince harry now officially engaged to actress meghan markle. prince charles' office broke the news a couple of hours ago announcing the couple got engaged earlier this month. the wedding will take place next spring. in the meantime, harry and meghan will live at nottingham cottage at kensington palace righ

in a statement prince harry said he was delighted to announce the engagement and received the blessing of his fiancee's parents. william and kate said we are very excited for harry and meghan. it has been wonderful getting to know meghan and see how happy they are. from the first public engagement's invictus games. to a romantic birthday trip to africa their love has been on full display. >> prince harry is a hugely popular figure, probably the most popular member of the royal family there is and to marry this beautiful actress who is an american who has appeared and known around the world is going to be a huge spectacle and i think actually it could even eclipse william and kate. >> reporter: the 36-year-old actress stole the heart of the 33-year-old prince despite a transatlantic relationship with the "suits" star stationed in ton for filming. >> i want to get married. but i a

>> all right. terry, thanks so much and prince harry and meghan markle's family sharing their excitement as well this morning. prince william and kate middleton saying we are very excited for harry and meghan. it has been wonderful getting to know meghan and to see how happy she and harry are together and meghan markle's parents have said, we are incredibly happy for meghan and harry. our daughter has always been a kind and loving person. to see her union with harry who shares those same qualities is a source of great joy for us as parents. we wish them a lifetime of happiness and are very excited for their future together. >> let's bring in our royal contributor victoria murphy, also correspondent with "the daily mirror." give us inside scoop. when did this go down? how did he ask the question? what else can you tell us? >> i would love to be able to tell you exactly when he popped the question but all we know at the moment is that harry proposed in london earlier this month. these are the things that i think we will find out in just a few hours when the couple give that long awaited television interview. when they will tell us exactly how

also get to see what we really want to see which is her ring. >> oh, yes, we will be looking for that for sure. nour, we know the queen has given her blessings on this engagement. do we know anything about the relationship between meghan and the queen right nowy. >> we know that meghan has met the queen. prince harry is very close to his grandmother. he was very keeping to make sure that meghan met her and that they got to know each other before an announcement was made. however, the queen has made a statement today as well to say she is absolutely delighted along with prince philip and so the whole family really is really excited and very much behind this relationship. >> now, i've read that the couple bonded over her work in rwanda and in africa. he's been so active there as well but will she be able to continue that work and her work as an actress or no acting? >> well, she will definitely be able to continue the charity work and the humanitarian

as you say that's one thing they bonded over, one of the things that attracted harry to meghan was her genuine attraction to this charity work and make a difference as he does. the acting works, very difficult. it's going to be very difficult for her to be appearing on screen, acting out scripts she doesn't have control over if she's a member of the royal family. i just don't see it happening. >> will she have any official duties as prince harry's wife? >> of course. definitely. i think like kate they will very much want toize her into official life so what we're probably seeing now and between a wedding is maybe two or three public engagements alongside prince harry getting her used to knowing the ropes and then following a wedding they'll probably make some overseas tours together and then she will start to build up like kate has done her own program of events and her own charities and be a working member of the royal family. >> and, terry, we've been told she's been going to be known as the duchess of sussex. th w

what more do we know about the actual ceremony? >> reporter: the ceremony, we have yet to hear about it. but it may be out at the chapel at windsor. one thing for sure it will bear the stamp of both these people who are very different kinds of royals. prince harry has grown up in front of us and he's always carried with him in a very human way full of his foibles and humor and failings. in some ways that mood he had when his mother was killed. he's talked about it since then. that has i think enlarged his heart, enlarged his sympathy. one of the things that make him a favorite. you'll see how they shape their own royal marriage, royal wedding. their own path forward as this generation is doing. >> okay, terry, victoria, thanks very much. we'll have much more on the engagement coming up and learn more about meghan markle. >> that's right. in the meantime, to this morning's other headlines. as lawmakers return to capitol hill.

sexual misconduct scandals are rocking both chambers of congress. minnesota inform senator franken breaking his silence since accusations emerged against him and tom llamas is here with more as franken heads back to the hill. good morning, tom. >> reporter: amy, good morning. inform senator franken says he's both embarrassed and ashamed of allegations of sexual misconduct with at least four women. and he's ready for whatever an ethics investigation uncovers. >> i have let the people down. >> reporter: for the first time senator al franken answering questions and apologizing on camera. telling minneapolis tv station wcco about some of the sexual harassment allegations brought against him. >> i'm not going to make any excuses. i am embarrassed and ashamed of some of what has come out. >> reporter: franken's public mea culpa comes ten days after leeann tweeden said franken forcibly kissed h

this photo groping her while the two were working together on a uso tour. tweeden telling robin why she came forward. >> i just wanted him to understand what he did was wrong. >> reporter: franken says he's ashaped of the photo and reached out to tweeden. >> i apologized to her and i meant it and she was gracious enough to accept my apology. >> reporter: three other women including 33-year-old lindsay menz said they were victims of franken's groping. menz says he grabbed her backside during this photo at the state fair. >> so you think it was clearly he knew what he was doing. >> i think it was absolutely. >> reporter: though franken says he's apologized to all the women who felt violated he says he doesn't remember these other cases. >> i don't remember these particular photos. >> reporter: but when asked if he had ever placed had is hand on a backside during one of those photos. >> i take thousands and thousands of pictures. we sometimes in crowded and chaotic

i can't say i haven't done that. >> reporter: the minnesota democrat says his wife of more than 40 years along with her two children are all supporting him and he has no plans to resign. before politics franken rose to fame as a write ever and performer on "saturday night live." >> i'm good enough, i'm smart enough and doggone it, people like me. >> reporter: 36 women from that show current and former cast and crew signed a letter supporting him saying he never acted inappropriately around them. but the show also took him to tank. >> and sure this was taken before franken ran for public office but it was also taken after he was a sophomore in high school. pretty hard to be like oh, come on. he didn't know any better. he was only 55. senator franken was asked if he thinks more women will come forward. he doesn't know because the initial ones have been a shock to him and his family. >> more on this from our senior congressional correspondent mary

let me begin with you, jon. those troubles with al franken and republicans in the senate still running away from their senate candidate roy moore down in alabama but not president trump. >> reporter: well, republican leaders in the senate have almost to a person disavowed roy moore. they have said that they believe the women that have accused him and even tried to find every possible way to get a republican challenger for him on the ballot or write-in candidate. the president moves closer and closer every day to an outright endorsement of moore. over the weekend he was tweeting about the alabama senate race attacking moore's democratic opponent saying the last thing we need in alabama and the u.s. senate is a schumer/pelosi puppet who is weak on crime, weak on the border, bad for our military and our great vets. so that's the president saying that jones would be a disaster. it's interesting. he doesn't mention moore by name in those tweets but it's clear that he wants roy moore to win that

alabama. >> no question about that. meantime, mary bruce on the house side in the capitol democrats embroiled in their own scandal. john conyers on the house judiciary committee forced to step down on that position. they look at allegations against him and senior republicans caught up in this as well. >> reporter: these allegations of sexual misconduct are dominating the conversation up here and we are beginning to see some consequences. democrat john conyers is out of his leadership position on the house judiciary committee at least for now while an ethics investigation continues into these allegations that he sexually harassed his former staffers, he denies them and isn't giving up his seat and looks forward to vindicating himself. on the other side of the aisle joe barton is under scrutiny after he apologized for a lewd photo of himself that circulated on line. so lewd we can't show it stems from what both sides say was a consensual relationship but barton also reportedly threatened t

he also says he has no plains to resign either. >> this could be just the beginnings of the revelations on capitol hill as they face an incredibly packed december. >> reporter: yeah, george, the list of unfinished business for lawmakers up here is pretty brutal. first up they want to pass tax reform then they also need to avert a government shutdown, fund children's health insurance, determine the fate of d.r.e.a.m.ers and pass emergency aid for hurricane relief and that is just some of the list. now, president trump will be up here tomorrow meeting with congressional leaders trying to hammer out some of this but these are really thorny issues and there isn't a lot of time for complicated negotiations, christmas is now just a month away and there are just 12 working days left when the senate and the house are both in session. >> okay, mary bruce, jon karl, thanks very much. george now to that volcano eruption sparking a mass evacuation in bali. 100,000 people there have been told to leave as the indonesian disaster raises alerts to the highest 4re68 and

the royal family. she's also out there as an activist and enthusiastic about her charity work and she's spoken out. hasn't she, about women's rights and about equality and i think that is what is going to make her a really interesting addition to the royal family and today we've had the queen, prince charles and prince william and kate welcoming her to the family. >> she seems to have stepped right into it. we've been calling it a whirlwind romance. no ups and downs, all up. >> it's only 16 months. it is remarkable but what really interests me a couple years ago i interviewed prince harry and asked a cheeky personal question. he doesn't like talking about his personal life but said, look, you've seen your brother and sister-in-law settling down having children. they just had princess charlotte and i said do you want to settle down and this was two years ago. he said to me, i would love to have kids right now but there is a process you have to go through. he also talked about how he thinks he does the royal duties

have someone by his side and now we know who that woman will be. >> process you have to go through. >> how did they meet? talk us through the initial row mans and how they found each other. >> so it's quite low key really for a prince -- they were introduced about i a muth wall friend, character cuss anderson at the soho price a private members club here in london and after that we understand they got on particularly well at that dinner and then they started going out on a few dates. prince harry, of course, has been so careful to keep that relationship as private as possible. it's not always been easy, obviously he's got such a high profile presence of his own and she's got that high profile career as well but they have managed quite well, i think, to try to keep it under wraps. it was that "vanity fair" interview that meghan markle did and what was it, back in october where she said that they were a couple very much in love but she also talked about how this is a time for them, that they wanted to keep it

>> reporter: dater is now in jail after pleading guilty to assaulting nine women while working at massage envy. ingram alleges she was put at risk because she allegations massage envy knew of at least one incident prior to her alleged assault. danielle dick is suing massage envy for more than $2 million after she says her massage therapist grabbed her by the head. put his hands over her mouth and assaulted her. >> i was at a national massage chain. i was at a massage envy and you never think something like this is going to happen. >> reporter: in her lawsuit she alleges she immediately reported it to the desk manager who said the massage therapist would be suspended. >> each time i said we need to call the police she responded to saying massage envy will handle it internally. >> reporter: she says she reported it to the police herself leading to his arrest and conviction. according to buzzfeed massage envy claims in court documents that it is not liable for sexual assaults at

eyes on you and will of course now when she marries harry be expected to carry out official duties. expected to be a working member of the royal family taking on charities, attending events and supporting the queen and other royals. >> duncan, it has been a long road to love for harry. we've been documenting it very steadfastly here in america. but tell us why meghan markle is the one for him? how did she steal his heart? >> well, i think when news of meghan's relationship with harry first broke last year, she didn't seem to check any boxes. a million followers on twitter or instagram. every single month has gone by and seemed more and more perfect for him. she might have to stop her role as an actress on "suits" but i think her role as an actress on a global stage is just beginning.

that. what will her duties entail? >> well, i think what we'll see in the next few months before the wedding is that we'll see a gradual buildup of duties so she'll make maybe two or three official appearances with harry and they can be anything from attending the opening of a school or a hospital, meeting the people there. to supporting a specific charity. we already know that meghan has a lot of charitable interests. he's done work with u.n. and worldvision and a lot of things she might want to bring in as she grows her role in the royal family. when they're married they'll do tours, they'll travel the world like william and kate have done visiting commonwealth countries and other countries around the world and really being ambassadors for britain and for the royal family. >> so many firsts with this couple and so a lot of people want to know what this wedding will look like. will it be more modern than william and kate's, as tradition imposes on them. what are the rules for them ask

can they break them and do whatever they want? we want to know what the wedding will look like. >> yeah, i think if harry had his way he'd get married in a small church have a few beers with a small group of friends. that's not going to happen. after the queen he is the most popular british royal and the public love him. i think it's going to be 2 billion on tv like his brother. >> do you think they've talked about the fact that harry is so different and she is american. do you think that we'll see some american flourishes or do you think this will be steeped in royal history? >> i think they'll be a lot of royal traditions followed, like william and kate it will be a huge wedding, probably televised and a lot of pomp and circumstance. the british military, the pageantry that we saw surrounding william and kate will all get involved. however, you know, harry does like to do things his own way and will want to put his stamp on the day, so

i'm already seeing -- yeah. >> oh, wow. >> that's about right. >> so people say, jen, can you tie to watch what you eat before a holiday party. it sounds like a good plan but it can actually turn against you? >> it can and i'll explain why. a very complicated process. dieting. it's not as simple as calories in, calories out. take a look. what happens in general when people start to diet. their weight may drop a little. that produces an increase in the hunger hormones. people are hungrier and metabolism actually slows down so that your body can restore itself to its equilibrium which is its heaviest weight, the set point theory so starting around holiday time not the best time to tart an aggressive diet. >> then you have to -- if you put fewer calories in your body regulates then you add more calories because you indulge because you have this at the table. you have a three-bite rule. >> listen, i want to be clear. everyone needs to find -- you
