good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm diane macedo. here are some of the top headlines we're following on "world news now." the house and senate now have to combine their tax cut bill noose -- bills into a single piece of legislation. the u.s. and south korean air forces are now conducting their largest-ever joint exercise. the five-day exercise comes a week after north korea fired its most powerful missile. north korea says the drills move north korea to the brink of nuclear

aetna. aetna insures around 22 million people. if a deal is reached it could ultimately impact prescription drug prices. and the kennedy center honors have been held without president trump. the president says he skipped the event so the honorees could enjoy the night without any political distraction. they still partied as you can tell. it is december 4th. from abc news, this is "world news now." a good morning to you all. we begin this half hour with the republican effort to change how much we all pay in taxes. it took a big step forward over the weekend when the senate passed its tax bill without the support of a single democrat. >> and now we're remembering our schoolhouse rock songs, because that bill must be combined with the one that the republicans in the house have passed. abc's lynda lopez has more about the

need to be reconciled. >> reporter: this week we may see more movement to pass the first tax reform bill in 30 years. >> as amended is passed. >> reporter: the senate passed theirs narrowly, 51-49. now it's up to the house to vote on its tax reform bill. and when that happens the house and senate must work out their differences. >> something beautiful is going to come out of that picture. >> we'll be able to get to an agreement in conference. i'm very optimistic about it. >> reporter: but there are key interests. the mortgage interest deduction, capped at a hundred,0$500,000 i bill. and the senate bill would allow tax cuts to expire in seven years. and there's opposition from students over a hou

provision that eliminates deductions for students. some legislators including republicans are against the high cost of this tax reform bill. the non-partisan committee says it will add $1 trillion to the deficit over the next ten years. lynda lopez, abc news, new york. and this week congress will work on avoiding a government shutdown. legislation to fund federal operations has to be passed by friday. mitch mcconnell says the shutdown is not going to happen. but some democrats said they would try to force a shutdown unless they tried to resolve the future of the d.r.e.a.m.ers. the investigation into russian meddling appears to be getting closer to the presidency. david wright with the details. >> reporter: president trump weighed in sunday on the investigation that threatens to unra

the special counsel's probe into russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion with trump campaign officials. trump tweeted, i never asked comey to stop investigating flynn. that tweet rebutting last spring's sworn testimony by fired fbi director james comey that trump had asked him to go easy on his investigation into trump's former national security adviser michael flynn. >> what he wanted me to do is drop any investigation connected to flynn's account to his conversations with the russians. >> reporter: president trump not only disputes that but accuses comb eve run being the bureau into the ground. after years of comey running the fbi, its reputation is in tatters, worst in history, he tweeted. on friday, special counsel robert mueller's probe extracted a guilty plea from flynn for

conversations with the russian ambassador. flynn pled guilty to a felony, his sentence reduced in exchange for his continued cooperation in building a case. some believe that probe is now zeroing in on trump and his inner circle for possible obstruction of justice, for reportedly telling comey to back off. >> i think what we're beginning to see is the putting together of a case of obstruction of justice. >> reporter: here's news max ceo and trump ally, christopher ruddy's take on the latest developments. >> my view is that robert mueller pose the an extension threat to the trump presidency. >> reporter: but the president continues to fight back. david wright, abc news, washington. well, today's a big day. it is the deadline for the president to make a decision on the location of the u.s. embassy in israel. now his son-in-law, jared kushner who isn't out in publish often told a

that the president hasn't made up his mind yet. the president can delay the decision. israel wants the embassy in jerusalem. the palestinians say moving it from tel aviv is a deal breaker. overseas, bloody clashes broke out in yemen's capital city. five days of bombings have shake and already fragile alliance. the rebels say they fired a missile toward a nuclear power plant under construction in the uae which the uae denies. alabama senate republican candidate roy moore may have some momentum with the election a week away. new polls have him and his democratic challenger in a dead heat. >> what a man sows, so shall he

reap. >> reporter: new polls showing a tight race. moore up six among likely voters in a virtual dead heat with jones up slightly in a "washington post" poll. moore who campaigned in churches this week was expected to win the stronghold by a landslide until allegations surfaced that he dated high school girls when he was in his 30s. two of them accusing him of sexual assault. he has denied any wrongdoing. the cbs poll finding most alabama republicans, 71% don't believe the allegations. some speaking this week with tom. >> i don't believe it. it's been 40 years through five or six elections, and we haven't heard a single thing about it. >> it will help an agenda, our president's agenda, the people's agenda. >> reporter: with moore finding support, mitch mcconnell appears to be stepping back from his initial condemnation. >> the well women who have come forward are

he's not fit to be in the united states senate 689 . >> do you believe roy moore should be in the senate? >> i will let the people of alabama make the call. >> reporter: but it could prompt a senate ethics investigation. as for the people of alabama, we'll have to wait to see who shows up to vote. that is going to be a key factor in who wins this race. eva pilgrim, abc news, new york. >> it will be interesting to watch in a week or so. the metropolitan opera has suspended world famous conductor james levine because of alleged sexual misconduct. three men have accused the 74-year-old of sexual contact with them when they were teenagers, starting back in the 1960s. overseas, european and african workers are moving to

libyan camps. many are being sold off as slaves. a migrant slave auction was caught on video with men being sold for $400. libya is the main transit point for those trying to reach europe by sea. up to 1 million people are bottled up in libyan detention centers amid reports of robbery, rape and murder among migrants. the and venezuela's president has a solution to the failing economy. the petro, the currency which he says will be backed by gold, oil and diamond wealth. the new krcrypto currency isn't going to happen, one says, it's just maduro being a clown. the prudential center in newark lost power for a few minutes while brooks was in concert. the crowd sang his

wow. so in florida, west palm beach, authorities try to figure out what caused a powerful house explosion. two people inside at the time of the blast did survive. four others in the neighborhood were evacuated. the cause of that explosion has not been determined as yet. a driver faces manslaughter charges in a

saying the only thing in tatters is the president's respect for the rule of law. the president meanwhile may have turned up the heat on himself during the twitter storm. here's david wright. >> reporter: the white house is racing to explain this tweet from real donald trump. it appeared to admit for the first time that the president knew his former national security adviser had committed a crime. i had to fire general flynn because he lied to the vice president and the fbi. now the president's lawyer insists he drafted that tweet for trump. another white house official admits it was sloppy. the issue is significant, because former fbi director james comey gave sworn testimony that the president urged him to go easy on flynn. >> i took it as a direction. i mean, this is the president of the united states with me alone saying i hope this. i took it as this is what he wanted me to do.

making a rare public appearance at a forum on the middle east in washington. he acknowledged there are many stumbling blocks to achieving peace between the israelis and palestinians. >> we do think it is achievable. and we think there is a lot of reasons why this is a time why it should happen. >> president trump may decide today whether to keep the u.s. embassy in tel aviv or move it to jerusalem. the palestinians say jerusalem is a kedeal breaker, and curb nr says the president hasn't made a decision. the kennedy honors were

attended by the president and first lady. they canceled the usual reception. the white house said that was done so honorees could enjoy it without any political distraction. and today congressional leaders will start the process of combining the tax bills that were passed separately by the house and senate. the senate's version was passed over the weekend in the middle of the night. no democrats voting for t among the differences between the bills that must be reconciled is the mortgage deduction. in the senate, it's $1 million but capped at $500,000 in the house. separately, senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says there will be no government shutdown this week. some democrats said they would try to force a shutdown unless congress resolved the future of d.r.e.a.m.ers program. alabama senate candidate roy moore has momentum. a new

points against doug jones, another poll shows jones ahead by try points. an overwhelming number of alabama republicans, 71%, say they don't believe the sexual misconduct allegations against moore. the idea was repeated by some members of a group called bikers for trump. >> how many times he ran for office, and we haven't heard anything. >> we do not need a man that is not in support of our second amendment rights. >> a few weeks ago, mitch mcconnell said moore should end his campaign because of the allegations against him. and there are new developments this morning in the sexual assault case of a former swimmer from stanford university. bro brock turner's legal team is appealing the verdict saying that what happened was consensual. here's marci gonzalez. >> reporter: brock turner whose six

outrage across the country is appealing his conviction. the former star stanford university swimmer served just three months behind bars. now more than a year later, his attorney filing this appeal, claiming the actual evidence does not support any of the three convictions. saying turner, who maintained the encounter was consensual did not get a fair trial. >> she was completely unconscious. >> reporter: the district attorney argued the then 22-year-old victim "emily doe" was intoxicated when he sexually assaulted her. two students say they witnessed him on top of her and dhaschasem away. the victim read a powerful statement in court that went viral, saying you tried unyieldingly to save yourself, your reputation at my ex-pension. turner received a fair trial, we were told, n
