comey, the fbi's reputation is in tatters, worst in history. comey tweeted back the fbi is honest, the fbi is strong and the fbi is and always will be independent. the back and forth ignited as the president's team tried to explain this tweet about former national security adviser michael flynn. i had to fire general flynn because he lied to the vice president and the fbi. >> if the president knew he lied to the fbi and asked him to drop this case, he knew that flynn had committed a federal crime. >> reporter: the president's lawyer insists he wrote the tweet. the issue significant because comey gave sworn testimony to congress that the president urged him to go easy on flynn. >> i took it as a direction. i mean, this is the president of the united states with me alone saying i hope this, i took it as this is what he wants me to do. >> reporter: trump tweeted i never asked comey to stop investigating flynn, just more fake news covering another comey lie.

robert mueller continues to build his case in the russia investigation. this after flynn struck a deal entering that guilty plea friday. >> that plea agreement does not to me indicate that there's very much else there. >> reporter: but top democrats on capitol hill believe we're beginning to see an obstruction of justice case. comey wasn't the only one that defended the fbi against the president. sally yates tweeted, the only thing in tatters is the president's respect for the rule of law. diane and kendis. >> kenneth, thank you. moving on now to more news from washington. republicans will in congress will begin the compromise on tax reform. the bill passed by the senate must now be reconciled with the one passed by the house. republicans insist there are no major differences between the bills but the differences amount to hundreds of billions of dollars. for example, the senate bill would keep the alternative minimum tax for corporations. also would lower the corporate

year and the senate bill only scales back the estate tax. unlike the house bill which would eliminate it. senate candidate roy moore is gaining momentum with alabama special elections just one week from tomorrow. a new poll shows moore leading democrat doug jones by six points. that same poll shows an overwhelming number of alabama republicans do not believe the sexual misconduct allegations against him. meanwhile, during an appearance sunday on abc's "this week," senate majority leader mitch mcconnell appeared to be stepping back from his criticism of moore. >> do you believe judge moore should be in the senate? >> i'm going to let the people of alabama make the call. >> mcconnell had previously called on moore to end his campaign when the sexual misconduct allegations against him originally came out. turning our focus overseas right now and the united states and south korea have ghun conducting their largest ever joint air force drill. two dozen american stealth fighters are among the hundreds of

sentencing hearing begins today in south carolina in the police shooting death of an unarmed black man. michael slager faces life in prison for killing walter scott when he shot him after a traffic stop. slager said he felt threatened after he grabbed his taser but this video showing scott was shot while trying to run away. slager's murder trial ended in a hung jury but he pleaded guilty to civil rights charges. toll booths on san francisco's bay bridge may not be ready for this morning's commute following a deadly crash there. four booths were damaged or destroyed after a truck slammed into the plaza early yesterday morning. killing a toll booth attendant, the driver faces manslaughter an other charges. time now for a look at your weather on this monday morning. southern california can expect to see powerful santa ana winds over the next several days leading to serious concerns about fire
