this morning on "world news now," fires burning out of control, right now in southern california. homes destroyed. thousands of people evacuated. schools and even a nfl team impacted by all of this. how long will the high winds last? today president trump will announce a controversial shift in u.s. policy. he'll recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel and announce a plan to move the u.s. embassy there. that's a dramatic shift that some say could put the peace process in jeopardy, but the white house disagrees. and the alert for holiday shoppers. >> online sales

>> it's one of half a dozen fires burning right now. tens of thousands have been ordered to evacuate. >> now dozens of buildings have been destroyed, including a large apartment complex in ventura. the exact number of homes and businesses lost isn't known because firefighters can't get into some areas to check. and it is still burning far out of control right now, nearing the beach. abc's donya baucus with more. >> reporter: fires are raging in california. the thomas fire in ventura county northwest of los angeles expanding to over 70 square miles in a matter of hours. >> they're attacking it the best they can, that's all we can do. the wind is moving in every direction. >> reporter: these fenced-in horses rescued just in the nick of time. >> i just don't want to let her go. i don't know where to take them, where it's safe. >> reporr:

lost everything. >> it's just devastating. >> this was going to be my dying-in house. the only thing is the house died before i did. >> reporter: this apartment complex destroyed. the vista del mar hospital razed to the ground. all patients and staff making it out in time. >> don't know what we're going to do without it, because i know a lot of people who got help from this place. >> reporter: the thomas fire is just one of many infernos the creek fire at the northern edge of los angeles forcing more evacuations. >> i cannot emphasize the need to evacuate. if not for yourself, but for the safety of our first responders. >> reporter: and in santa clarita, the rye fire forcing the highway to shutdown. firefighters have not been able to examine the scope of the damage done here. they are calling this firefight an uphill battle because of the santa ana winds expected to last throughout the week. diane and kendis?

there in ventura for a moment. there's a seaside town home to 100,000 people. >> kabc chopper pilot was above ventura, showing us how close the flames are to the ocean and to more homes. >> reporter: we are back over the thomas fire, you can see highway 33 come into frame. we're going to fade into satellite. and ojai is up in that area. there is a lot of activity up highway 33. fire on the east side and west side. we're seeing a lot of strike team activity in this area. we believe there are some homes in there. we're going to fade-in to sky dot satellite. you can see all those homes. the fire up on that steep hillside gives you an idea of how steep that terrain is that the fire is on. you can see all the fire here on the north side of the 101 and west side of 33. it is making its

forest. a little bit further to the north and to the west. now there are hotspots all along the fire line, all the way back to highway 150. so there are hotspots all the way around. the bulk of the main fire, the head fire at the left flank, if you will, the south flank continuing to burn here on highway 101. >> what a fascinating look at where the fire's burning, and the update to j.t.'s report there, the fire has now jumped the 101 freeway and has reached the pacific ocean. all the smoke from the fires is making the air quality in that area much more unhealthy. >> you can even see the smoke from space. check out that image. and the l.a. rams are cutting today's practice short because of the air quality. let's check in with paul williams for the forecast in southern california. >> what we have here still a big-time problem with the fire threat throughout southern california bringing windy conditions.

a closed-door interview with the house intelligence committee. lawmakers are expected to question him about a 2016 meeting with a russian lawyer and other officials. nbc news is reporting that the russian attorney told the senate judiciary committee that don jr. asked her if she had evidence of illegal donations to the clinton foundation. she reportedly said he lost interest after she had no information. the white house is not confirming or denying whether president trump plans to pardon michael flynn now that flynn has pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi. cecelia vega asked the president directly. >> reporter: with mike flynn's plea bargain creating new problems for the white house, the president was tight lipped on whether he would pardon his former national security adviser. any plans to pardon general flynn? >> thank you very much. >> any plans to pardon general flynn, mr. president? his reaction is decidedly mixed, from uncertainty -- >> we'll see what happens.

months of his investigation, $6.7 million. cecelia vega, abc new, the white house. thank you, and former white house strategist, steve bannon has hit the campaign trail for alabama senate candidate roy moore. bannon bashed members of congress who haven't supported moore, calling them cowards. jones said moore should go to jail, not the u.s. senate. and terry crews is making new claims in a lawsuit stemming from an alleged groping incident. he accused talent agent adam venit of repeatedly groping him. the new lawsuit claims venit and other executives have since tried to silence hem and hurt his career. the suit also alleges that the agency condoned the allegedly predatory behavior by failing to punish him for it.

updating our top story, at least three major fires are burning across southern california. the largest is the thomas fire in ventura county. it has now jumped the 101 freeway which had been keeping the fire away from some homes near the beach. tuning now to a warning from ups. some deliveries are delayed. it is struggling to handle an overwhelming increase in shipments from online orders. so ups is adding up to two additional days for package delivery time and is scheduling many of its drivers for 70-hour workweeks. >> wow, lots of overtime there. hopefully they're staying safe. and we're getting new details about another close call between two airliners. this time at jfk. >> a passenger airline was lined up on the wrong runway with another plane sitting in its path. here's david kerley. >> reporter: the appen

call at jfk when the pilots of a mexican jetliner lined up to land on the wrong runway. a delta jet was ready to take off. the pilot of that commuter jet sees a bigger plane coming right at him. 880, an a-320, was cleared to land. but they lined up to 13 right, which is about 10,000 feet to the south. that's where the delta jet was getting ready to roll for takeoff. that is the mexican jetliner going around. it's unclear how close it actually came to the delta jet at the end of that same runway, david kerley, washington. >> frightening moments there in the sky and on the ground. when we come back, a big
