flames have come to one of the nation's busiest highways, the 405 described by some as driving through hell. >> certainly looks that way. officials have identified five major active fires, including the thomas fire. that one has grown to 90,000 acres. and the newest fire burning is notice wealthy residential area of bel-air. matt gutman has the latest. >> reporter: that major new wildfire crowding the famed hollywood hills with fire. >> really frightening. >> reporter: some of the most expensive properties in america. the flames engulfing interstate 405. one of america's busiest freeways. making for a hellish commute and threatening the getty center and its priceless artwork. hundreds of firefighters on the ground and swarms of aircraft fighting the blazes from the air. flames churning into neighborhoods.

engulfed, and the smoke coming out is noxious, like breathing in tear gas. the helicopter overhead now. dropping water right now. i might get wet! they're dumping everything they have on this fire. you can see from the helicopters. you can see that home over there, right behind me, they're blasting away at this fire with whatever they can trying to save these homes. some firefighters overcome by the heat and that smoke. many residents racing to pack up and get out. a nursing home also evacuated. patients parked in their wheelchairs outside. but this woman and her family stayed behind with a little help now fighting to protect their neighbors' homes. >> it was like a war zone in our back yard. fires were coming all over. >> reporter: this fire one of four major blades

california. the creek fire left at least seven firefighters injured. this horse rescued from a ranch your nearly two dozen others didn't survive. the flames marching all the way to the pacific ocean. our marcus moore is there. >> the thomas fire destroyed 150 structures here in ventura county. and already some people have begun the process of sifting through the rubble as the flames threaten 12,000 other structures. >> reporter: some able to survey the damage. >> it's devastating. sorry. grateful we have our home, but very sad for my neighbors and the way my neighbors look. and it's just horrible. >> reporter: they're predicting gale-force winds. the concern from officials is that the ferocity of winds will pick up. the flames you see on the hillside here and push them up

these very exclusive neighborhoods that haven't burned yet. matt gutman, abc news. >> just yichb credible scenes. and we just got new video from the ventura county fire department. and you can see the fire line along the mountain ridge. and then that bright flash, an explosion there. >> wow. you can see it down there on the lower hand part of the screen. >> and you can see how much smoke is in the air. this is a huge source of concern right now as well. hundreds of schools are closed this morning. a lot of concerns about the toxicity of the air. now we're seeing the fires continue to grow. an explosion of some sort and many homes in danger with all this. >> air quality is definitely bad in the area. we're continuing to watch that. and the situation is being fueled by as we call them the santa ana winds. and the fires will only get worse today because the winds are expected to gust up to 80 miles pe

>> abc's rob marciano has more from sylmar, downtown los angeles on what fire crews are facing today. >> reporter: this portion saw some of the highest wind gusts when the fire burned dozens of homes. still thousands of people evacuated. and we have round two now of the santa ana winds getting into thursday and maybe even friday morning. winds could gust 30 to 40 miles per hour in the city, that means 60, 70, maybe 80-mile-per-hour wind gusts in the canyon areas. that makes it impossible to fight fires. this particular fire burning over 11,000 acres, injuring seven firefighters, and they are tired as well and trying to be ready for this next round as it comes in, not just with high winds but single-digit humidities that will last right through the weekend. but the next 24 hours will be critical. rob marciano, sylmar,

congress appears to be on track to avert a government shutdown. money runs out tomorrow at midnight, but the house is set to vote today on a bill to keep agencies running through december 22nd. and president trump will meet with congressional leaders today. the president warned on wednesday that a shutdown could happen. but the white house said the president was anticipating productive talks. also happening today, a big announcement from senator al franken after losing support from many fellow democrats. franken is widely expected to row si resign. but his office insists he has not made a final decision yet. dozens of democrats, including senate minority leader, chuck schumer, are calling for him to step down as two more accusers come forward. >> you're saying he should resign. >> and i get no pride or pleasure in saying

>> i think today's allegations just further add to a fact pattern here that's just unacceptable. >> one of the new accusers said franken tried to forcibly kiss her in 2006 and another woman claims he groped her at a party eight years ago. that brings his total number of accusers to at least eight. the international community is blasting president trump's decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel. eight countries, including the uk and france are calling for an emergency meeting at the u.n. to discuss the issue. abc's serena marshal has more. >> reporter: he said this was simply a recognition of reality. >> today we finally acknowledged the obvious. that jerusalem is israel's capital. >> reporter: in 1 t995, a resolution had been passed to do just that, but it had been waived by all previous presidents, due to fears it would spark violence in the region and make peace talks al
