so close to the flames. but everyone just doing whatever they can to help. >> such a dangerous situation right now. >> you can see so many people aare trying to escape and their cars are surrounded by flames on one of the busiest highways in the country. that right there is the 405 right in the middle of los angeles. our team is spread out across the fire zone. abc's matt gutman starts us off in bel air. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, michael. we're just off that 405 freeway you mentioned. this area hasn't burned in over half a century which is why it came in here so hot. i want to give you a sense of how hot it was. this is a roof tile completely pulverized by that heechlt all you can see what's left of this palatial home is those chimneys. all eyes 60 miles north on the thomas fire burning out of control for a third straight day. this morning, the massive thomas fire is

county and shows no signs of slowing. it's fueled by winds up to 80 miles an hour and it has already devoured more than 90,000 acres around ventura county. >> i never seen a fire like that before. >> reporter: those flames leaping over the pacific coast highway tearing through neighborhoods in ojai. >> it's dangerous out there. >> reporter: thousands of new mandatory evacuations ordered, residents taken out of this nursing home one by one. this as wildfires rage all across southern california. >> look at this. >> reporter: the hillsides around los angeles' 405 freeway exploding with fire casting that eerie orange glow as motorists skirted through ha hellscape. >> attempting to prevent the fire from jumping west of the 405. >> reporter: the 405 is one of the busiest interstates in the country and its nine-mile closure caused a traffic nightmare. the fire throwing a cloud of smoke over the getty

its priceless art. it didn't spare homes in bel air, one of the most exclusive neighbors in america. right behind me they're blasting away at this fire with whatever they can. trying to save these homes. this is obviously not easy. help came from the air. swarms of choppers. the helicopter overhead now. it's dropping water right now so might get wet. . in areas that haven't burned in generations we found ron at the husk of his neighbor's palatial home. >> it's still burning. hasn't been a fire here sin since '61 when we had the bel air fire. >> reporter: at least seven firefighters injured in southern california. this one overcome by smoke and heat. >> are you just hot? >> yeah, i was just hot. >> reporter: over 150,000 people evacuated. but this woman and her family stayed behind. there you go. with some help fighting to protect their neighbor's homes. >> it was like a war zon

backyard. fires were coming all over. >> reporter: back in ventura county, some residents going home to survey the damage. >> it's devastating. sorry. grateful we have our home but very sad for my neighbors and the way my neighbors look and it's just horrible. >> reporter: this fire in bel air was known as the skirball fire. it wasn't a huge fire but it flared up right in the geographical heart of los angeles right next to the 405 right under the getty. want to give you a sense of how many this affects. the l.a. school district has closed 265 schools this morning. that affects over 100,000 students. guys. >> it does give you an idea, matt. as matt was reporting the biggest blaze burning is that thomas fire in ventura county and our marcus moore is there. marcus, you're already sighing so much destruction. >> reporter: we are, robin, this morning and you know that 90,000 acres that burned as matt mentioned is

number and 150 structures have burned. many of them are like the homes here in the nob hill estates. it's differ to tell but there are three homes in a row that have burned down and you see this one, that wall still there and look at that charred wreath on that front wall and there's twisted metal in front of the house and really devastation all around here and as you work your way towards the garage, look at that suv. it is charred and there's also a car next to it underneath debris that's fallen down burned up as well along with the jeep parked in the driveway. breathtaking to see this and what's astonishing is the fact that, yes, there are a number of homes in this neighborhood that have burned but also others that are still standing like this one next door. difficult to see the roof of it, it's fine, the house is still there and the woman who lives here says that there were embers like this. it's charred right now but these were on fire falling out of the sky and landing all around this neighborhood. he

of the house sweeping these embers away as they were coming down and believes that's one of the reasons why her home is still here. but as we have seen up and down these hills of ventura county there are so many that are gone. >> we do see that. i know it's early but are people able to get back and to check on their homes? >> reporter: they are. we saw that yesterday and today we expect to see that again, people just beginning the process to sift through the rubble and they have, robin, been able to find some items. we met a family yesterday that actually found a rosary and it gave them some bit of solace and hope as they move forward here because there is so much left to clean up. >> yeah, all right, marcus, thank you. another major fire burning in the east. rob marciano is there in sylmar, california. the winds kicking up making it so hard to fight these fires. >> very much, george. here in east l.a. county the fire for now at least is in the higher terrain thankfully but clearly it's already been

already burned down several homes. these cars incinerated when fire came through. you see the glass blown out, the rubber melted. this metal, look how much it melted from the heat of the fire that came through here. the people we talked to last night that live in this area, i mean, they're scared and frustrated. they're worried about what's to come today in the form of more wind. they have since evacuated one again, 150,000 impacted by evacuation orders. with this fire alone which is only 5% contained and winds that are surely going to pick up the hope is they don't blow for as long or be as strong as what beer's forecasting. >> that is tough. you see the hulks of cars right there. >> ginger, tell us how bad those santa ana winds will be. >> we've already seen 60 to 85-mile-per-hour gusts overnight. i just want to remind everyone, you see rob standing there or marcus standing there and it doesn't look windy. that's the epitome of a gus

can you have it look calm and all of a sudden have a very strong wind come through. this is what it looks like from the cockpit of the skirball fire and want to thank all the firefighters too. they deserve such huge props. you need thousands of people to fight fires like this. how large an area that is covering. air quality an issue. the great basin high will keep in place. through the weekend this ringel not breaking down and see gusts anywhere from 20 to 40. i was looking through saturday, even sunday, very gusty winds to come, unfortunately. >> we will continue to continue to cover the fires. now to capitol hill where senator al franken is expected to make that announcement about his future as calls grow for him to resign from members of his own party over accusations of sexual misconduct. dozens of democratic senators now say he should step aside. our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce has the very latest from washington. good morning, mary.

the chorus calling for franken to go is deafening. it started yesterday when yet another accuser came forward. shortly after a handful of democratic women said enough is enough. a coordinated push that forced open the floodgates and now at least 39 senators say franken should resign and later today franken will announce his response. facing an avalanche of calls for him to go. >> we need to draw a line in the sand and say none of it is okay. >> reporter: this morning multiple democratic sources tell abc news that senator al franken is expected to announce his resignation. the second high-profile lawmaker forced out over allegations of sexual misconduct. >> proudbably in the best intert of a lot of people for him to resign. >> today's revelations just further add to a fact pattern here that's just unacceptable. >> reporter: the allegations against franken have been piling up. two more accusers came out wednesdabr

eight. one reportedly says franken tried to forcibly kiss her and that he told her it's my right as an entertainer. franken called that allegation categorically not true and preposterous. >> i am embarrassed. i feel ashamed. >> reporter: franken has apologized to other accusers and tried to turn the page calling for an ethics investigation. and for weeks that seemed to be enough for democrats. >> i know there are no magic words that i can say to regain your trust. >> reporter: but on capitol hill, that trust from his colleagues appears to be gone. now, behind the scenes i'm told democraticed leader chuck schumer has been urging franken to resign making the case on the phone and in person over the last 4 hours for him to step aside. george, franken is expected to make that announcement later today on the senate floor. >> he had been such a close ally of al franken, chuck schumer so that was a big loss. new fallout from president trump's poff to recognize

jerusalem as israel's capital and ultimately move the u.s. embassy there. the president called the dramatic break a step toward peace but it is drawing a fierce reaction in the area and condemnation from a chorus of world leaders. martha raddatz has all the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, george. outside of israeli support there has been condemnation of president trump's move across the globe. from the arab world to european leaders who have called it regrettable, unhelpful and palestinian leader mahmoud abbas said the announcement could lead to wars that never end and shows that the u.s. can no longer be an honest broker in the peace process and on the west bank you see there there have been protests this morning with israeli police firing teargas into a crowd but so far the protests have been relatively small. secretary of state rex tillerson in vienna this morning is calling the president's move just a recognition of reality since israel has most of its government offices in

will the protest escalate? and at the heart there are competing claims over the status of jerusalem and what it means for the peace pro set. >> reporter: it's been asupered if a two-state solution was agreed east jerusalem would be the palestinian capital and west would be for the israelis but president trump's announcement changes that putting the u.s. clearly on the side of the israelis claiming it all, george. >> martha raddatz, thanks very much. george, there are also new developments in the russia investigation. we're learning more about what the president's son don junior did and didn't answer when he was grilled for hours by the house intelligence committee over that meeting with the russian lawyer in trump tower. our senior justice correspondent pierre thomas has more from washington. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: robin, good morning. it was a high stakes eight-hour marathon session behind closed doors. much of it focusing on that controversial 2016 meeting at trump tower between senior trump campaign officials and the

russians. democrats on the committee wanting to know whether donald trump jr. asked for and received dirt on hillary clinton during that meeting and who if anyone did he report to about the meeting. they also wanted to know what he discussed with his father, the president, when the story about the meeting broke and donald trump jr. released the initial misleading statement when the russian contact was about adoption. >> he acknowledged discussing that matter with his father but refused to answer questions about that discussion. >> reporter: would not answer any questions. >> not on this topic. when we asked him about his discussions with his father after the e-mails became public he and his attorney invoked attorney/client privilege which we do not applies here. >> reporter: but republicans had a far more generous view of the grilling. >> he's answered everything, answered everything honestly, totally, unequivocally. >> any evidence of collusion. >> absolutely no. >> reporter: at one point

trump's lawyers wanted to know how much longer. the sources said congressman adam schiff said hillary clinton sat for 11 hours on questioning. trump junior shot back. that's different. four americans were killed. >> there's new details you're saying about who don junior spoke with in trump tower. >> reporter: while sources say don junior would not discuss his conversations with his father about the statement concerning the trump tower meeting he did acknowledge discussing the matter with hope hicks, the current director of communications. she may soon be interviewed. >> lots of developments on the russia investigation including this new evidence from capitol hill that michael flynn when first national security adviser was determined to get rid of russian sanctions. >> reporter: a key democrat on the house oversight committee released an account from a whistle-blower who claims that a flynn business partner got a text message from flynn stating a project about nuclear reactors was good to go. the reason according to

flynn believes sanctions on russia would be ripped up. >> more on this now from jon karl, also in washington. jon, as mueller's investigation intensifies, as the congressional investigations intensify you're seeing more questions from the president's team and his allies about that mueller investigation. >> reporter: an all-out effort by people close to the president to try to discredit the special counsel's investigation, sean hannity. the fox news host and occasional adviser to the president said this week that mueller is a disgrace to the american justice system. george, a lot of this is zeroing in on the member of mueller's team that we learned over the weekend was fired over the summer, peter strzok for sending text messages to another member of mueller's team showing that he clearly favored hillary clinton in the presidential election. he is, one official called, the forrest gump of all this and worked on

e-mail investigation and was until he was fired a member of the mueller team. >> meantime, on another matter we're still facing this government shutdown tomorrow but it looks like they'll be able to kick the can down the road a couple weeks. >> reporter: it does, the congressional leaders, democrat, republican, will be at the white house and, george, i expect we'll see an extension of government funding just until december 22nd so the shutdown showdown is simply deferred. >> jon karl, thanks very much. >> once again, once again deferred. >> keep pushing it off. it's not going to go away, though, that's the key. you know, as we told you earlier southern california is in crisis mode facing those wildfires. but in all of this there is a moment of home, don and julie meyers from ventura, when they went back home to see if they could salvage anything, and you won't believe what they found. they found julie's wedding ring. don got down on one knee and proposed for a second time solidifying himself as the most romantic guy out there. and, guys, give a big thank you

home of the two suspects here. what's so fascinating is this video. they have put out denying it. they're basically going after the media, they're going after the police and admitting they've committed crimes in the past but they're saying again and again and again, we didn't do this. we weren't responsible. >> how does that video affect the investigation? >> well, look, it certainly is going to be evidence. anything you say will be used against you. that will be used against them. i think that video while they're trying to say this proves we didn't do it. this proves we've been trying to be helpful to the police is part of the reason they have gone after them and i don't think they helped themselves at all when at the end they flip off the police. >> we know you primarily work with children. but when it comes to, callahan, online safety, staying safe being online. the ruleses are pretty similar here. >> they are.

number one rule is you don't meet somebody out in the real world that you've only met online. yet for some reason we think that once we become adults we're immune to that and we're not. you know, these cases are rare. these social media and dating sites don't want this happening to their users but we need to stay hyper vigilant when using these. >> callahan, what about the companies behind these apps and these websites. what are they doing to try to make sure the people who are using them stay safe? >> well, the major ones are really trying to do all the right thing, again, they don't want this happening to their users and do reach out to us at the national center. we're on the trust and safety council of many of these sites and help them create and craft policy to make sure users are safe on these platforms but, again, like i said these are rare cases but do happen. >> the suspect here is admitting she was on a date with her but saying it wasn't me. she's saying this has nothing to do with the date at you. i dropped her off at a friend's house and that's the last i saw of her. this is watching the

4-year-old online, gave out the address of his school and warned the royal family will not be left alone. our chief attorney correspondent terry moran is at kensington palace with details. terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. the british royal family are among the highest profile terror targets in the world, the u.s. president and pope also. in this country which has seen five terror attacks in 2017 the threat is very real even for the little ones. this morning british authorities charged this man with two terrorism offenses after prosecutors say he threatened prince george allegedly posting a picture of the 4-year-old royal with details about the prince's preschool on social media. along with an ominous message that prosecutors say was meant to help others plan terror attacks. >> he's been arrested and to have the evidence kind of against that it must have been kind of quite credible. >> reporter: british media reported the picture husnain rashid posted showed the young

silhouettes of isis fighters and texts saying the royal family would not be left alone. it's not their first scare. this incident comes months after a security breach on prince george's first day of preschool back in september. authorities say this royal super fan, louise gentry gained unauthorized access to his school not once, but twice in 4 hours. authorities characterized the the woman as mentally ill after detaining her near the school. in 2003 a comedian dressed in traditional arab garb skirted security at windsor castle crashing prince william's 21st birthday party and got all the way to the prince even kissing hill on both cheeks. last year a man was arrested seven minutes after scaling the wall of buckingham palace but back in the early '80s a 33-year-old michael fagen was able to scale that same wall before climbing up a drainpipe and breaking into the palace. then wandering into the queen's bedroom and waking her. she woke up and

we move on to capitol hill and that announce many coming from democratic senator al franken as calls grow for him to resign in the wake of those sexual misconduct accusations. let's go back to mary bruce in washington. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. there is now a tidal wave of calls for franken to go. this all started yesterday when yet another accuser came forward shortly after, a handful of democratic women came out and said enough is enough launching a coordinated push and now at least 39 senators are calling on franken to resign. the accusations against the minnesota senator have been piling up. eight women now accused franken of sexual misconduct and groping. now, the senator denies some of those allegations but has apologized for others and tried to make amends but clearly it has not been enough for his colleagues here on the hill. franken is now expected to make an announcement later today on the senate floor and multiple democratic sources tell us he is expected to resign. george. >> we will be watching. okay, mary, thanks very much. >> we certainly

look -- up to 20 to 21% associated risk of breast cancer. the hard numbers i want people to know about results in 13 more cases of breast cancer for every 100,000 women but the real number i want to stick out in people's minds, robin, because so many young women and teenagers take the pill and are using the iud, this only increases the risk in that age group of 2 extra cases for 100 women under the age of 35 because breast cancer is uncommon in that age. >> key to put that up but, okay, still people are going to be -- women will be concerned about this because it is a method that women use. >> you have to remember the benefits we talk about risks and benefits. take a look at the list. there are a plethora of benefits to hormonal contrainvestigation ranging from a very effective way of preventing pregnancy. known to low her the risk of ovarian and uterine

manage endometriosis and treat acne and help women with their periods. >> you are board certified, ob/gyn. what's your advice. >> i think this is a significant important study. i think it has to be interpreted in the proper context. i think women need to remember the bisque, benefits and options and i think what's important about this study is the risk is different based on the woman's age and the duration of use so a woman in their 40s who faces a higher risk of breast cancer may want to consider other methods and if you're going to discontinue hormonal contraception because of this, i would recommend you stop drinking alcohol as well because that increases your risk. it has to be a conversation and, robin, my 18-year-old daughter is on the pill. i'm not going to recommend that she stop. >> okay. you heard it here. it is important stuff and people should talk to their doctor. their children and talk to their doctors. >> it is a dialogue. >> to your "gma" moment, shall we,

[ cheers and applause ] >> well, this book is basically my experiences in life and to my recollection of how my life went and how it's been so far and i got some of my goals in there and just what i been through. i grew up in foster care and moved around a lot. been through some tumultuous situations and i've always try to find a bright side of anything dark going on. anything hard to deal with, i always try to find what's the funny in this. what is the fun in it. why am i going through it. some things you can't find nothing funny about it -- but it's happening to you for a reason and probably to help other, that's how i feel. so share the story, share the experience and maybe it'll help somebody else in their journey. [ laughter ] obviously they into me. i'm going to start taking what they say and use it for me so i started calling myself a unicorn and used to only say it in my head then i'm going to take all the stuff the mean bullies and make money off of it. >> you're doing it. and we have here you're going to mix the cinnamon which is my -- >> oh, is that your secret ingredient. >> the secret ingredient. >> i love cinnamon. >> mix that together when the dough is ready, sift the flour, put in the eggs, all your wet ingredients go with your dry ingredients then you have this dough. beautiful dough. filled with cinnamon and sugar and love. chill it for a couple of hours. you're going to roll it into balls like so. half the size of a golf ball. toss it in this sugar. >> more sugar. >> more sugar. [ applause ] >> yeah. >> going to put it on this baking sheet and pop it into the oven. nice and flat like this then i top it with my other seek ingredient. the marshmallows and can use a torch or pop them in the oven and let that marshmallow get all melty. >> okay. >> yes. >> look good too. okay, panel of kid testers, give it a try. give her cookie a dry.
