new fire breaking out in san diego county. where at least 20 structures are now destroyed. in malibu, firefighters pouncing on fires there. the thomas fire raging across ventura county, barrelling into the town of la conchita. firefighters battling a blizzard of embers and ash. you can see inside this ridge, the fire engulfing both sides of the canyon. we watched the fire line leap across this mountain. they are dropping as much water as they possibly k the idea is to stop the fire from getting to this charred part of the mountain to the avocado fields and homes below. and we found anthony and rene sprinting back to their home. it was a scramble repeated thousands of times in california this week, rene ripping photos off the walls of her

with the flames. rob marciano is following the progress. >> reporter: here, the creek fire, they've got a bit of a handle on this one, with 20% containment and no additional growth. even evacuation orders being lifted. but for some of those people coming back to what has been burned is going to be heartbreaking. over a dozen homes destroyed in this area alone. tens of thousands of people have been under evacuation orders. meanwhile, this long duration, historically strong, santa athat wind event continues. red flag warnings have been extended now through sunday. new overnight we've learned the names of the victims in the deadly shooting in new mexico. they've identified casey marquez and francisco fernandez. both were killed inside aztec high school. police officers had to sho

stairs and found the suspected shooter dead. schools throughout aztec will be closed today. the white house is defending donald trump jr.'s failure to answer questions about his conversations with his father. >> reporter: the white house is facing questions about why donald trump jr. is refusing to tell congress what he told his father after news broke about his controversial meeting in trump tower with a russian lawyer. trump jr. spent about eight hours before the house intelligence committee, answering questions about his june 2016 meeting. he had been told the russian lawyer had dirt on hillary clinton as part of russia and its government support for mr. trump. trump jr. acknowledged discussing the matter with the president when the news broke over the summer, but he refused to describe that discussion, citing attorney/client privilege, because he said lawyers for him and his father

were also on the phone. the top democrat on the committee says that's bogus. >> in my view, there's no attorney/client privilege that protects a discussion between father and son. >> reporter: we put that to the white house press secretary. >> we believe that his lawyer had a legitimate reason and basis for not answering those questions, but that's something i would direct you to his attorneys to address more fully. >> can you explain how it can be attorney/client privilege when neither donald trump jr. or the president are attorneys? >> again, that's something would you have to talk to don jr.'s attorneys about. >> reporter: don jr. hasn't shared anything since the testimony but shared a picture of the helicopter he took on his ride to new york, writing "time to roll". the top democrat on the intelligence committee is threatening to subpoena trump jr. saying this is a

meeting and that donald trump jr. must answer questions about what he and his father discussed. jonathan karl, abc news, the white house. meanwhile, a short-term funding bill is headed to the president's desk in an effort to stave off a government shutdown before tonight's deadline. but it only extends the deadline two weeks. setting the stage for a budget battle just before christmas. the president met with top republicans and democrats. both say it was a productive meeting but they made no agreements. congressman john lewis is refusing to attend tomorrow's opening of the mississippi civil rights museum after president trump accepted an invitation to the event from the governor. lewis, a civil rights icon says the president's policies are an insult to the people portrayed in the museum. the white house called his decision unfortunate. and former arizona sheriff joe arpaio tells abc news he is strongly considering a run for senate. he plans to make his intentions known shortly after the new year. he was pardoned in august by the president for a contempt of court conviction. he hasn't spoken to the president about that possible senate run.

former usa gymnastic doctors has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for possessing child pornography. that's the first of three sentences for nasser. he will learn his punishment in state court next month for pleading guilty to molesting gymnasts. while claiming to treat their injuries. he will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars. former south carolina police officer michael slager has been sentenced for the shooting death of walter scott in north charleston. in court, messages of forgiveness between the families of the two men. >> reporter: the former police officer in this alarming cell phone video is headed to federal prison for 20 years. one of the longest sentences ever handed down to an officer in a racially-charged shooting. families on both sides broke into tears a the judge sent
