kimberly: right now, our first dose of winter weather. we are tracking the conditions and what to watch out for tonight. plus -- >> he helped someone in need and now he has joined the ranks of fallen heroes. kimberly: a double tragedy on i 270, two off-duty officers killed and how they are being remembered tonight. >> now abc 7 news at 6:00, on your side. kimberly: good evening. i'm kimberly suiters. the first snow of the season, including that rare snowstorm to the south. we have live team coverage tracking it from the d.c. metro to

first we get to meteorologist brian van de graaff. what are we in for tonight? brian: the snow is moving out, but not before putting down a couple inches. maryland, 1.7 inches, frostburg at three, centreville a little over two as well as annapolis. southwest d.c. just under an inch, and singer's county over 2.5 inches of snow. -- and southern maryland over 2.5 inches of snow. the last of the snow bands are lifting to the north. the broken edge of snow through the southwestern portions of the area, fauquier county, culpeper, stafford, fredericksburg. the big picture shows the bulk of the system is north and east. this is a wide system, all the way from the carolinas to virginia. for the overnight, dropping back in temperature and the skies clear. anything that looks

as if it were ice and we are dropping back. i'm concerned especially with the sidewalks and side streets late tonight and early tomorrow morning. be careful tomorrow morning. through the day tomorrow, the wind will howl, with sunshine and the pavement will dry. but definitely be weather aware tonight. kimberly: the first snowfall of the season causing troubles for some. ager road's right now seem to be ok. tom roussey is live in mobile track seven and upper marlboro with how the roads are. are you seeing any ice? we're going to do a live test right now. we are in the villages of marlborough, and we wanted to show the secondary roads and neighborhood streets. we are about to slam on the brakes.

we brought storm trak 7 to leonardtown, maryland, where it has been snowing off and on earlier this morning. i wanted to look at what we are seeing. if you pan down, the roadways have really been wet throughout the morning and over here it is really sticking in the grass. if i step down, you can see how deep we are talking about. right over here, this really is a winter wonderland. look how pretty that is. we found a bunch of kids taking advantage of the snow, having a snowball fight, and we have seen several snowmen and peoples front yards. a really fun first snowfall of the season. in the district, the d.c. snow team plans to keep full deployment until midnight tonight. vdot

sending out a news release about the snowfall, urging drivers if you are out on the roads today or tonight, really be patient and stay cautious. we are in leonardtown, maryland. amy aubert, abc 7 news. what we are experiencing is a little more than a dusting, not much compared to what million saw across the south. talking about record amounts of snow, power outages, and flight delays. ryan clark takes a closer look. brian: kids across the start ours -- across the south are frolicking in the snow. while the children are having fun, some drivers faced potential nightmares. >> some folks in southwest louisiana are not used to driving on ice. brian: officials telling drivers to stay off the roads. treacherous conditions in alabama made worse by down power lines, causing traffic to be diverted. parts of alabama got as much as 10 inches of snow.

other. q mccray has how it unfolded. >> he stopped to help and now he has joined the ranks of maryland's followed heroes. q: state police announce the death of sander cohen, a deputy chief with the state fire marshal's office and a rockville volunteer fire friday. the police believe in accurate suv driven by fbi agent carlos wolff hit a barrier and wound up disabled in the left lane of i 270 friday night. sander cohen stopped to help. >> i'm positive he did not give it a second thought. >> he was in his personal vehicle and put his emergency flashers on. q: the two men got out on the left lane and what to the shoulder, where they were hit a honda accord avoiding their cars. >> he swerved onto the shoulder, stroke both men, and propel their bodies over the jersey wall into the northbound lanes of i 270. q:

kimberly: take a look at this building. this is the grand opening of the west end library and it is not your average library. it is a 325,000 square foot facility in foggy bottom featuring retail, apartments, and lots of books. this looks like fun, right? it's a lot more fun when some alleles pays for it. one of the men here is accused of using somebody else's credit card for the exciting adventure. the police say the couple used a stolen credit card to pay for their skydiving day. officers are trying to track them down and are getting help since they agree to be photographed and videotaped. still ahead, we continue to track the conditions outside. what we need to watch out for.

beautiful snow. josh knight got his new puppy into the snow. everybody was checking out the snow today. a live look at the national harbor, reagan national to the northwest, 32 degrees. most of the day we were around freezing. the solar radiation, even though it was cloudy, 34 degrees or so throughout the day. now it is dark, the sun is gone. the temperatures are dropping back, 31 culpeper, 28 winchester. i think we will drop back because the models indicate the skies will clear, meaning temperatures will drop into the 20's overnight. the road temperature will drop as well. i'm concerned about the side streets, sidewalks, areas that are less treated and traveled. the low pressure is lifting to the north and east. the back edge of the precipitation coming out of the virginia tidewater across the

midwest is kicking the system out. this is more mountain snow showers that anything. that kicks this system out and that brings clearing skies later tonight. , culpeper madison, and to the west, seeing snow. futurecast says by about 9:00, 10:00, good to go. my bedtime, the snow was basically gone except the western slopes of the mountains. we stay in the 20's, right around freezing, so definitely could be slick spots in the morning and it will be called. overnight 21 to 31, gradual clearing, slick spots with the re-freeze likely. the biggest concern tomorrow morning, sunday services early, the temperatures will be below freezing. the sidewalks will be slick. sunrises at 7:16. through the afternoon we make a run at 40. it will be breezy. the combination of the sunshine and brees should -- and the
