to see from our second camera the massive array of fire trucks behind me. hundreds of them here, hundreds more on the fire lines, 8500 firefighters in total from ten states. this morning, an out-of-control wildfire making history in southern california. >> we're facing a new reality in the state. >> reporter: the thomas fire is now the fifth largest to ever burn in the state. now surging from ventura to santa barbara county. >> it's really terrifying. >> reporter: the wildfire charring another 50,000 acres on sunday alone. leaping over painstakingly cut fire lines. watch this time-lapsed video showing a plume of smoke rising like a mushroom cloud over ventura county and santa barbara in just 30 minutes breaking out exactly a week ago engulfs tens of thousands of acres this a matter of hours. >> look at how big that did and how dangerous it is. >> reporter: over the past 24 hours the fire consuming an area about the size of was

move along this ridge all day long. now, the good news for firefighters is that the wind here has subsided but there is so much dry brush out there that fire keeps moving relentlessly. over 700 structures destroyed. some residents returning home this morning to homes reduced to a ashes. >> oh, my god. oh, my god. >> reporter: tens of thousands of residents still evacuated. authorizes evacuating 5,000 more people overnight. >> the fire burned down the entire backyard. so i'm ready to go. >> reporter: among them is actor rob lowe who lives in santa barbra streisa barbara. >> praying for the people in my area hope everybody is getting out safe like we are. >> reporter: oprah winfrey taking to twitter with a heartfelt message writing peace be still is my prayer tonight for all the fires raining through my community and beyond. containment had reached 15% but

fire lines causing containment to drop to 10%. now, one reason this fire has been so stubborn and relentless is because these areas have not burned in nearly 100 years. now there have been hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. power is out for 85,000 people in santa barbara county and more fallout. many schools are closed until the new year. guys. >> boy, it is going in so many different directions. >> it is. >> we'll move on to politics and that alabama senate race getting so much national attention. ahead of tomorrow's vote polls show a tight race between roy moore and doug jones and president trump weighing in for more. a host of national democrats for jones. our chief national correspondent tom llamas here with more. >> reporter: just when we thought it couldn't get any stranger it's taken another bizarre turn. in the weekend before voters head to the polls one candidate was all over alabama campaigning while it's unclear if the other may have left the state.

this morning in alabama a tale of two very different campaigns. roy moore disappearing from the trail, no public appearances with voters since last tuesday. but democrat doug jones tearing through the state campaigning all weekend. >> we're running a campaign that's going after votes across this state. they're not. they're in hiding and they've got a segment of the population and it's the only population they care about. >> reporter: moore still battling allegations of sexual misconduct including sexual assault on teenage girls appeared on local tv in a prerecorded interview that aired on sunday. >> these allegations are completely false. i did not date underage women. i did not molest anyone. >> reporter: moore's sabbatical from campaigning comes as president trump gave him a major push. first at a rally in nearby pensacola, florida. >> so, get out and vote for roy moore. do it. do

>> reporter: the president also recording this robo call obtained by abc news. >> hi, this is president donald trump and i need alabama to go vote for roy moore. it is so important. we're already making america great again. >> reporter: moore's name may be on the ballot but even his own campaign says a vote for moore is really a vote for trump. >> this is donald trump on trial in alabama. if the people of alabama vote for this liberal democrat, doug jones, then they're voting against the president who they put in office at the highest level. >> reporter: still, some republicans find moore toxic including the state's senior senator. >> i didn't vote for roy moore. i wouldn't vote for roy moore. i think that the republican party can do better. >> reporter: a democrat hasn't won a senate seat in alabama for 5 years and beating moore won't be easy. his core supporters along with staunch conservatives plan on voting for him

allegations. >> it's my belief that god put in that seat is according to god's will. >> reporter: in another sign moore is aligning himself with the president as much as he can tonight moore campaign campaigns with steve bannon. doug jones has three events throughout montgomery and birmingham leading into tomorrow's election. >> such a turnaround for the president and all his supporters. as you were alluding to moore out of state over the weekend? >> you know, george, it's strange and it's really unclear at this point. there are reports out there he may have been nearly a thousand miles away in philadelphia. we don't know for sure because the campaign won't comment. he did not attend his regular church service. reports say he planned on going to the army/navy football game in philadelphia. moore's a graduate of west point. the campaign tells me he definitely did not attend the game but when i asked if he traveled orb got caught up in the weather going to philadelphia i was told no comment by two campaign sources. >> interesting campaign strategy there. okay, thanks very much. the roy moore race and the me

on more than a dozen women who accused president trump of sexual misconduct. several expected to tell their stories on national television today and yesterday the president's u.n. ambassador nikki haley supported their right to be heard. >> women who accuse anyone should be heard. they should be heard and they should be dealt with and i think we heard from that prior to the election and i think any woman who has felt violated or felt mistreated in any way, they have every right to speak up. >> let's bring in cecilia vega for more on this and, cecilia, nikki haley not taking the white house line and it's not the first time. >> reporter: yeah, exactly. this certainly seems to be a pretty big departure from the white house line that they are liars. a few days ago in the briefing room sarah sanders said this was settled essentially during the campaign, voters spoke when they elected donald trump as the president of the united states. but, look, haley has publicly as you said parted ways with this president in the past. most notably over charlottesville, also over

election meddling. this issue right now is front and center for this white house. it's not just haley, today there are now three democratic senators who are suggesting president trump might want to resign as a result of these accusations, not to mention this conversation happening on a national level. these calls certainly growing louder. >> you have a new poll out showing 70% of the public believes these claims should be investigated. president trump should be investigated right there. is the white house feeling this pressure or just holding firm? >> reporter: you know, george, they're holding firm. not just that number there was another one that jumped out. 73% of americans in that poll say it's hypocritical for this president to abe accusing men -- criticizing men accused of sexual misconduct, george, so this isn't going away for this administration. >> okay, cecilia vega, thanks very much. let's bring in matthew dowd for more on this right now. you saw in tom's piece nationalizing strategy for the republicans right here making it about president trump, roy moore disappearing. is it going to work? >> well, the democrats did the

want to try to make it as local as possible. the republicans want to to make it national. the only strategy at this point in time for roy moore to win. he's slightly favored, george, in this race. but i think it's still a chance that the democrat can win in a deeply red state like alabama. but it's the only strategy he has which is stay out of the limelight and don't make any more errors. >> you've seen president trump coming out full-throated support and some of the senators softening their opposition to him but the big question if he wins, what do they do? does he become subject of an ethics investigation or creating a problem for republicans even with a victory? >> well, george, i think this is a no-win situation for the republicans. if they lose a race in alabama it's a huge problem because obviously they've lost a race in a deep red state but a win actually is a big loss. to me it's akin to going into the playoffs, a football team going into the playoffs which is 2018, the elections and getting most of your players penal

offensive drive being being taken out of the game for good. the founding ceo of the concussion legacy foundation tweeting disgusted that the houston texans allowed tom savage to return to the game after two plays after showing these horrifying concussion signs. is that a seizure after a head impact? bill o'brien saying an unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant cleared him to return to the game. >> the testing that they do, they try to make the best decision and weren't satisfied with the results of the second test so they decided to, you know, pull him then that's when he went to the looker room. >> reporter: the nfl says its chief medical officer initiated a review to understand what took place following the play. and the texans went on to lose that game against the 49ers but just one look at twitter last night showed the focus was very much on savage himself. so many hoping he's okay. >> yeah, i mean but when you shake like that, first of all, it's scary but, you know, as a player, why would he go back into the

arrest that, yes, he has more victims. but he says authorities did nothing about it. it was the case that riveted the nation. kala brown discovered alive after she was chained up for two months by the ankle and neck and held in a metal shipping contain on this property in rural south carolina. her boyfriend found dead in a 1458 low grave nearby and todd kohlhepp was arrested, later found guilty of killing seven people. this morning kohlhepp is taunting police and the fbi from behind bars telling them there are even more victims. in an eight-page letter to "the spartanburg herald-journal" he said there is more than seven. i tried to tell investigators and i did tell fbi but it was blown off. kohlhepp saying his killing spree may have crossed state lines and even borders writing at this point i really don't see reason to give numbers or locations. >> we told him before he left to go to whatever prison he's at that we'd be

him about any past crimes that he could tell us in the future. he said at the court hearing he had none. >> reporter: after being released brown told dr. phil her captor bragged about murdering hi staggering amount of people. >> he would brag about how many people he's killed. how good he was at it. >> how many people did he tell you he killed? >> he said he was near the three-digit mark so almost a hundred. >> reporter: something he told daniel gross, a reporter he's been exchanging letters with since his sentencing. >> he went on to describe that, yes, there is more than seven and didn't go into a lot more detail other than that. >> now, the fbi south carolina office is declining to comment on kohlhepp's claims but the spartanburg sheriff we spoke to said his department is willing to help the agency and law enforcement officials within any jurisdiction if it means getting more justice for any of his other potential victims out there. >> okay there, amy. joining us is lenny depaul, the

retired commander of the u.s. martha shall service. what does your gut tell us. >> this guy has psychiatric problems and has for a long time. at the age of 14 he kid new hampshired a woman. he rapes her then he walks her home. pulls a gun, threatens her if she says anything he's going to kill her and the family. fast forward 2003 to 2016 he pleads guilty to the seven homicides and other cries. he's specific about these, you know, these cases right down to the names, details. he gets life in prison. there's no death penalty in south carolina so he's going to sit in prison for the rest of his life and writes an eight-page letter and says, yeah, there's many others and i have a pilot license, i've been around the world but i won't give you names or specifics. is he sending them on a fishing expedition. >> they have to look into it. how do they go about it. >> they will. they won't leave any stones unturned and look in areas he's been in the past decade. unsolved homicides they'll look at it. any of his dna or

all across new york, all across new jersey. they come to port authority. as you can imagine, so many people are here. police right now are trying to divert crowds from getting near port authority. trying to contain this. right now they say one person is in custody. only a few injuries but police do have video, they say, and are confident that this is contained right now, george. >> this is such a major hub, the largest bus terminal in the united states, busiest by volume. it's going to tie up traffic here in the new york/new jersey area for days and, of course, gio, this area always on such high alert. >> reporter: always on such high alert because we're so close to times square, george. you know that. we're just blocks away from times square and when you look at port authority. i'm looking at it right now. it's just this massive structure that just goes on for blocks and blocks so right now we have ambulances on the scene. so many ambulances, so many officers that just immediately dispatched here. clearly trying to get a hold -- a handle of this situation.

people sort of confused that are here trying to catch whatever train or bus they need to to get over to as they commute to work. >> okay, gio, thanks very much. >> port authority just a short distance from here and hearing the emergency personnel making their way that way. pierre thomas is in washington and what are you learning, pierre? >> reporter: well, we're working with our federal sources. they been alerted by nypd that this is ongoing. obviously there's great concern because mass transit has been something that law enforcement has long been concerned about. apparently based on gio's reporting that this is relatively contained but i can tell you this will send shock wave as cross washington because law enforcement as george said has already been on high alert looking for the potential of any kind of attack over the holiday season. >> serves 225,000 people every single day, 85 million people a year. port authority, major hub here in new york city for the entire region. the good news

are hearing from police that they believe the situation is contained. we have the former police commissioner right now, ray kelly, on the phone as well. ray, as we've talked about so many times, so much concern about times square and the port authority. >> absolutely, transportation hubs are always, you have to be concerned about. as you said very volume of people go into the port authority every day. the location where buses come in and people are on the subway and thank god it sounds like it's been eliminated. we know there was an explosion of some sort of device exploded and there are injuries. somebody, who they're talking to, not certain if that person is under arrest or not. but right now the word is that it's limited in nature. >> but the reason there's always so much concern here, ray, as we've seen attacks like this in the past where in the panic after the initial explosion, there are often follow-on attacks. >> well, we always have to watch out for additional attacks,

particularly attacks that are aimed at first responders and that's something i know this police department does, you have to be worried about secondary attacks because anything like this is going to attract a lot of first responders as you can seen 0 television, lots of police officers, lots of firefighters there, so, yes, you have to be very careful examining the scene to make certain there is no other device or no other plan to attack first responders. >> yeah, that is a live look at the scene right now. people walking away from the port authority and, gio, you know, you can't know for sure but right now it appears the evacuation is going relatively calmly. >> reporter: that's right, george. we just learned from the nypd that the a, c and e lines are being evacuated. some of the biggest most important lines in new york city, the express line that take you up and down the west side, also take you to the east side of new york city so as you can imagine so many people get on those trains every single day.

filming. margot robbie and my friend steven rogers who wrote it met with her extensively but i saw her on the red carpet and almost started crying seeing her. she was crying. she was so overwhelmed and when i saw her i was speechless. i just wanted to hug her because she came up to me and said what a great job i did portraying her mother and i just felt -- made me really sad. >> you talk about that empathy. people forget what a villain she was. >> that's how she was portrayed, though. i think she was portrayed as one thing. it was the advent of the 24-hour news cycle and they put it out there that she was evil and nancy was the princess. >> it's like a story you can't make up. >> yeah but when you see it there is a lot more nuance to it and what she -- her life, her upbringing, you don't -- the movie doesn't completely exonerate her but makes you question what exactly her hand in all of that was and she had a lot of questionable characters in her life that you just have to see it.

authority, that is a live look right now at the scene. the largest, the busiest bus terminal in the united states, according to police sources one man set off the explosion, he is now in custody badly injured. another person in the terminal also injured. the terminal has been closed right now but we want to go right to abc's gio benitez who is on the scene. gio. >> reporter: hey, george, i want you to look at this. you have all of these officers here. you have all of these ambulances and fire truck, the bomb squad is here on the scene. no doubt so many people were here so if only another person was injured and the suspect that is truly a miracle, george. because we're talking about so many people coming through this terminal not just for the buses but also for the subway system, we know that they were evacua evacuating the major subway lines here in new york city. now, the working theory right now, the suspicion is that this

detonated earlier than intended because it was underground going through this passageway where not too many people were and so that's the good news here is that this could have been so much worse had it detonated where it was supposed to, but right now that is just a suspicion that is just something they're working on, george, trying to confirm. no doubt so many people in this area right now police say that this seems to be contained. >> the information is just coming in. the suspect, what we know about the suspect, the suspect from bangladesh been in this country about seven years, was living in brooklyn. apparently wearing the pipe bomb on his person when it went off as gio seemed to indicate a little prematurely. a lot more to be learned right now and want to go to our senior justice correspondent pierre thomas for more on that. anyone claiming responsibility right now? any other information coming in to federal officials? >> reporter: no one has claimed responsibility, george. but i can tell you that attorney general homeland security officials a t

country have been briefed. they're awaiting additional information. george, there has been great concern can the upcoming holiday season that you could see an event like this. two officials that i spoke to are just so thankful, george, that so far it appears to be contained with limited injuries, george, but this has major implications for the upcoming holiday season, clearly someone was trying to hurt or kill as many people as they could. >> everyone will be on high alert. i want to bring in brad garrett for more on this. well, what may have been the saving grace here, brad, is that it was a relatively crude weapon. >> right, this is going to be amateur hour, george. he probably learned online how to build a pipe bomb. the tricky part obviously is the timer. that obviously didn't work out well for him. and it's interesting that he had it on his person. >> okay. well, that's what we have right now. an explosion at the port authority here in new york city at the height of rush hour. you can hear the emergency vehicles outside. we'll stay on this story all morning long here on "gma" and
