people without a home days before christmas because of the raging flames that ripped through section of prince george's county apartment. alison: this all unfolded at the carriage hills apartment this morning. we have team coverage for you today. we start with brad bell. brad: yeah, so the fire was back in the carriage hills apartment back in there. the management asked us to stay off the property so we can't show you the building. they have already started to rebuild. this was a bad fire. you will see the video. firefighters say a fire can double in seis if it is uncheck -- double in size if it's unchecked every minute. this had a head start. >> for the residents of the carriage hills apartments it was a terrifying morning. >> my gosh. it was like crazy flames. banging on the door saying it's a fire, telling folks to get out. >> the garden apartment style building was engulfed. >> video and the still photos tell the story. >> the fire was advanced on thece

firefighters went to the offensive fire tack and the rescue. >> the rescues included pulling two people to safety by ladder from balconies. favor victims treated for smoke inhalation. 30 people displaced heading to the holiday. >> that building was very pretty. they had the lights all around it. you know, so i'm sure everybody is devastated. i hope christmas comes for them. >> many people are stoic now. but it will hit them. >> the red cross says replacing the lost gifts for displaced children will be a priority. >> we are going to provide assistance today to meet those immediate things folks have clothes, food, replacement of medical items. we will also have conversations with them about where they plan to go. >> the red cross is working with the families tonight. there were a number of children displaced. local churches have been gathering goods, clothing, that sort of

the management company looking for the vacancies within the complex to put families up tonight so they can try to rebuild the lives. for some of them salvage christmas. in hill crest heights, brad bell, abc7 news. larry: make the call. urging you not to delay picking up the phone when the flames start. >> it's important learning how quickly the flames spread in that fire. horace holmes continues the team coverage from the "live desk." horace: with this blaze the fire officials say they believe the fire burning for some time before the first call for help was made. >> according to officials when the firefighters arrived on the scene of the two-story garden apartment, this is what they saw. the blaze roaring and spreading through the building. "7 on your side" obtained the recordings of the first call from dispatchers rushing to the scene. this call went out at just about 7:00 this morning. >> apartment fire.

>> two-story garden style apartment. got fires shown from first division i to division ii. >> veteran firefighter alan doubleday in charge of the zane told abc7 news the fact that this fire was nearly out of control when the crews arrive makes him believe the blaze had been burning for some time before residents called nine fine for help. >> only a mile away. they arrived on the scene and the fire on two floors and part of the roof. we want to encourage the sits and the residents to see something, say something. don't assume someone else calls 911. it had been burning for a while. >> that is an important warning from the assistant chief. the first 911 calls reporting the fire came in before 7:00 a.m. there is no way that the fire department can know exactly when the fire started. >> the scene of th

derailment in washington state is almost back to normal. the train cared what been removed. the authorities say three people died and dozens of others were hurt when the train went right off the overpass. the ntsb is looks first and foremost how the speed was a factor in this. >> looking at the speed but they are not saying its a primary cause. horrible day in weather for the investigation. there are two cranes. putting the rail cars on to flatbed trucks. they want to recreate this scene at an air force base nearby. >> more than a dozen train

amtrak this time in texas. semi-truck and a train crashed in san marcos with 150 passengers on board. thankfully no one was hurt in this one. the semi didn't make it over the tracks in time. you can count on us to keep you updated with the new information on the deadly derailment. for minute-by-minute update, download the smart phone app. larry: royal caribbean that the cruise ship passengers were on a bus that flipped and crashed in mexico. at least 11 people died in the crash. we don't know the northboundalties but we -- nationalities but we know some americans were injured. the passengers were on board. and americans on a bus behind them when the crash says the weather was clear. it was heading. >> we have an update by a suitland boy shot in the chest

trantham. he refused a field sobriety test after admitting to having a come of beers and it went dowel hill from there. the allegations are pretty remarkable. stephen: paul trantham is a well known community activist and familiar face. elected neighborhood commissioner. last night, prince george's police say he was highly combative and smelled of alcohol. with the black and the white officers peppered them with racial slurs. >> they pulled him over and he refused the breathalyzer but he says the police behaved badly. not him. >> the police department is getting red

larry: people are calling ride share instel on ambulances. >> are they seeing this trend as well? >> they are. a few years ago the ambulances were so tied up they had to bring in the reinforcement using ambulances. now it appears that lyft and uber may bring relief. >> probably three, three times a week. >> twice a week. >> any more than that is a fascinating trend. >> instead of calling 911, sick people are tapping the uber and lyft app instead. >> one time a female said the ambulance took too long to come and she had to get to the hospital. she called uber. >> cold. i had a young lady yesterday that had hip replacement.
