good morning, america. holiday travel frenzy. tens of millions of americans racing home for christmas. lines already growing at airports across the country. chaos in dallas when a terminal is forced to evacuate and traffic backing up as that major storm moves in with snow and rain. 22 states now facing alerts from oregon to maine. president trump heading to mar-a-lago for the holidays as congress celebrates avoiding a shutdown overnight. but still questions this morning, will president trump deliver on his big christmas promise and sign that tax bill before the holiday?

well is under way. a live look at chicago's o'hare airport. look at all those people. one of the busiest in the country today and just the scene moments ago in dallas after that evacuation. everyone piling back into the airport and, amy, the worst thing you can hear at the airport you have to be rescreened. >> oh, gosh. millions more, of course, not just hitting the airways but roadways driving for the holiday. this is a live look at our traffic cam in new york city. aaa says more than 97 million people are hitting the road over the next week. >> you'll be doing that, driving and flying. >> driving today and flying this weekend. >> 2.7 million expected to fly and david kerley is at dulles airport outside washington, d.c. starting us off on the tarmac. it looks like they're putting you to work this morning. >> reporter: actually, some of the cargo is coming off this plane just came in from sao paulo.

the terminal. completely evacuated and folks going back n hour and a half delay in love field. southwest, big airport and could ripple through the rest of the season on these very busy days. a look at flight aware that shows you what the situation is in the air right now. doesn't look that busy because it's just getting going. look at yesterday to give you an example. yesterday and today the two busy days of folks getting where they want to for the holidays. now, so far cancellations not a problem. the weather still a threat but it hasn't been an issue. now, here for united at dulles airport, today is their busiest day here, not only loading cargo but aircraft coming in and between today and new year's, they will have nearly 5 million people they will transport through these jetways onto the aircraft getting home for the holiday. so far, tom, things are working all right. >> that sounds great and we will watch that weather. you said yesterday and today are some

what about after christmas, all those travelers returning home? >> reporter: well, here's the problem. as we spread this out over the last couple of days, yesterday and today folks getting to where they want to be for christmas but then as i get out of the way because they're bringing in another cargo deal here, tuesday a lot of folks will want to get home and taking these two days, compacting it tuesday, it will be a busy day trying to get home tuesday. pack some patience traveling that day. >> david kerley on the front lines of the great escape. thank you. weather has such an impact on travel and, ginger, i know, you've been watching the big storm moving across the country. where is it and what's it going to do to everybody hitting the roadways and airwaves? >> you're already seeing light freezing rain in bedford, pennsylvania, and snow in the northeast. denver, colorado, the roads, that's what it looks like less than an inch.

spin-offs. that is sometimes worse. storms possible dallas to memphis this morning. a couple of airports to watch. boston tonight, if you have a flight there i would watch out for that. we stopped it at 7:00 p.m. along the warm front, i-90, 95 could be messy and rain saturday night but if you have a flight yet washington, d.c. to new york and boston, you could see rain and then snow. hey, you want a white christmas? there's a shot of it for some folks. i'll tell you about it coming up. >> very exciting. we move on to washington right now. overnight congress avoiding a government shutdown for the moment but as the president heads to mar-a-lago this morning, the u.s. is facing backlash over his decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel. the u.n. voting to condemn that move despite ambassador nikki haley's threat. our congressional correspondent mary bruce has all the latest from the white house. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, amy. well, in a collective rebuke, the unit

overwhelmingly to condemn the president's decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel. it came even after the president's u.n. ambassador, nikki haley, issued a direct threat suggesting that the u.s. would think twice about funding the u.n. if it went through with this, adding that the u.s. will be, quote, taking name, but the u.n. did it anyway and afterwards the former cia director john brennan called out the president directly tweeting, donald trump expects blind loyalty from everyone, qualities usually found in narcissistic, vengeful autocrats. >> all right, well, we know the president is planning to celebrate the holidays and is heading south? >> reporter: the president will shortly head to palm beach where he will spend the holiday with his family at mar-a-lago. could be one of the longest stretches he is away from washington, not on official business, but, of course, the president is always president, and he is expected to be attended to official business while down there and i'm

guessing you could probably expect a couple tweets, as well. >> probably on tap. mary, thanks. tom. quite a year in washington, let's bring in matthew dowd for a year-end review of the trump presidency breaking down what he promised and if he's delivered. good morning to you. let's start with the president's tax cut plan, a clear victory for the president, also getting rid of the obamacare mandate which penalized people for not getting health insurance but a battle he hasn't won to fully repeal and replace obamacare. >> i think it is a clear legislative victory on the tax cut said and you're right to say on the obamacare side it's not a clear victory but there is a huge difference between a legislative and political victory so put a lot of yards on the field and has a lot of first downs but for political purposes he hasn't accomplished that much. >> his signature issue on the campaign trail was the promise to build a

pay for it. that's still a promise he hasn't fully delivered on. >> i think it'll be one very difficult to deliver on. all the compromises he has to do with congress related to the immigration issues and this one is tied up in it. one, with those compromises and, two, the fact that the budget now, he's got a 1.5, $1.1 trillion deficit that will come from the tax cuts and building that wall will cost billions and having covered the campaign, i think it will difficult for him to do in an election year that's already problematic. >> yeah, he's going to have to find that funding. one of the next big challenges for the president. the midterm elections and new reports about a heated meeting between his staff and corey lewandowski who got into it with bill

should be worried. not a real staff problem but fundamental problem. all presidents in their first midterms with very few exceptions have huge problems with their party. this president has the lowest approval rating and you know from the data, lowest approval rating a president has ended the first year at going into christmas than any president has ever had. that and the fact that his party is disliked much more than the democrats sets up for a huge wave for the democrats and big problem for the republicans in both the house and senate in 2018. >> also shown he's willing to get out and campaign hard for candidates he does like and endorse. matthew dowd for us, thanks so much. >> merry christmas. now to that urgent search for a possible serial shooter suspected in at least ten drive-by shootings in california in the last month. police say it's a top priority to find whoever is responsible and matt gutman is in california with the very latest on

gunman issing itting people when traffic is at its heaviest. >> reporter: that's right, amy. police say this mystery shooter has been stalking passing vehicles during the morning and evening commutes. now, just imagine being in a car like this when it is slammed by gunfire. right now police say that it's just pure luck that nobody has been killed yet. >> someone just shot my boss. >> somebody shot your boss? >> reporter: this morning authorities are desperately searching for a driver they say is terrorizing rural california. ran domly firing guns at passing vehicles. >> we are working very hard to find you. we will hold you responsible. >> reporter: ten cars have been hit in the past month alone around the fresno area. this map shows the density of the attacks, all occurring within this 12-square-mile area. >> if this keeps going it will be a matter of time before we have a murder investigation. >> reporter: it was nearly

earlier this month one man calling 911 after his boss was struck in the chest with shrapnel while she was driveing. >> my boss here got shot through her window in the car. can you send an ambulance? >> did she get hit? >> yes, she's bleeding. >> it is random, again, we only have one person so far that has been injured. >> reporter: police say there are two threads connecting them. mostly happening near morning or evening rush hour and many of the motorists say the shots have been coming from a dark-colored pickup with oversized tires. >> a common thread in all the reports is that the victims say they heard loud bangs as another vehicle passed them going the opposite direction than the roadway. >> reporter: now the concern from police is not only a motorist might be shot but it might cause that vehicle to lose control. police say they have very little to go on right now.

that dark-colored pickup truck is the vehicle they're looking for. much less the identity of the person or people inside of it. amy. >> wow, so little to go on. so frightening. thank you very much. in california an update for the millions affected by wildfires out there. all significant evacuation orders have now been lifted and the worst appears to be over for the thomas fire which has become the second largest wildfire in state history burning more than 400 square miles and forcing 100,000 people to leave their homes. it's now 65% contained, and most people can return home for the holidays. >> certainly a gift. we are in the final days before christmas and amazon and walmart going head-to-head battling for your dallas for last-minute gifts and our economicing correspondent rebecca jarvis is here with the deadlines you need to know. the deadline is obviously monday. >> we're basically there, amy, yes, good morning. it is that special time of year

war to get our attention and money and nowhere more evident than walmart and amazon. two of the most popular destinations for online shoppers and stepped them right up until the last minute, walmart, you have until december 23rd, 4:00 p.m. to order online and pick it up in store on christmas eve. with amazon if you're a prime customer you can sign up for a trial membership and have till christmas eve at 9:30 a.m. >> that's right, because, you know, i think christmas is on a monday so people think i've got the weekend to get the gift, right? but that's going to be a little tough. shortcuts for going online. >> if you are hitting the stores this weekend, amy, you have to expect malls to be packed. 53% of consumers, about 126 million people plan to shop this

is the last saturday before christmas so it's a good idea going to the mall order online, pick it up in store and last-minute shortcuts, some things that never go out of stock, e-books, order them electronically. specify the date they're delivered by e-mail. memberships and subscriptions, spotify, netflix, all can be purchased online and gift cards, you can send those and there's a list of gift cards up to 20% off. big discounts on those and finally a number of retailers are doing something new. target has a gift now option so you choose a gift on their site, it's delivered by e-mail to the recipient. they can adjust and exchange it before it ships so basically an e-mail christmas morning with the gift but the actual item comes later. >> you just open your e-mail instead of the gift. >> isn't that wonderful? >> so 2017. rebecca, thank you. this morning we're switching gears and celebrating

of 28-year-old erika alvarez accused of murdering her friend and kidnapping her 6-week-old baby and passing the infant off as her own. they say erika alvarez kidnapped the baby hoping to pass it off as her own child after murdering her mother. they tracked her to this apartment complex. alvarez was standing outside with her boyfriend holding the infant in her arms and alvarez is believed to have suffered a recent miscarriage and may have been trying to hide her loss from her boyfriend and family. >> it suggests she was friend with miranda's brother. >> reporter: this morning alvarez is in police custody charged with murdering shamali's mom who was a family friend and kidnapping the 6-week-old child. >> she stated the front door was open and the

already lying dead on the floor and took her daughter, shamali. >> justice. i hope she gets life in prison. >> reporter: and alvarez was expected to go before a judge last night but that didn't happen because she's under medical watch. as this investigation enters a new phase, amy, investigators believe alvarez acted alone without her boyfriend's knowledge. he is not being charged at this point. >> thank you very much. tom. >> amy, thanks. now to a scare for katy perry. an alleged stalker arrested. a judge ruling he is a credible threat ordering him to keep away. abc's linsey davis is here with more. this isn't the first time he's allegedly tried to grab her, right? >> you're right. according to the police report he tried to contact her in canada twice and in multiple cities including atlanta, chicago and orlando and allegedly told authorities i will do whatever it takes to be with katy perry. this morning a man

bars charged with aggravated stalking of katy perry. >> he says he's going to do whatever it takes to be with katy perry. he follows her all around the country. >> reporter: pawel jurski from poland in the u.s. on a tourist visa has aid submitted to following the singer of smash hits like "roar." follows her all around the country from toronto to chicago to michigan to florida, according to a police report obtained by "the miami herald." in miami wednesday night jurski allegedly entered a restricted area of the americanairlines arena attempting to rush toward the stage and according to that report, jurski recently went to a hotel perry was staying in and hid in a stairwell. >> traveling around the country, it's things fans do to go see concerts. that is common that they literally have dead heads that literal travel from place to place -- >> this is not the grateful dead. this is a

[ applause ] before we get started with your dresses and book we wanted to get your take on something that's been in the news. we saw engagement photos released and a lot of people have been commenting on the sheer top that meghan markle chose to wear in some of these photos. people are wondering if it's appropriate for a royal to wear something see-through. what is your fashion take on it? >> yeah, i mean it is sexy but i think how it was styled was quite -- i think so elegant and beautiful and she's young and modern and that's the whole point of their love affair and i think it's very beautiful and she looked amazing. >> not that i have any weight at all in the fashion world but i thought it was beautiful and elegant. >> like even though -- she was hidden in how they posed. if if it was a whole different set it wouldn't have worked but it was quite chic. >> so let's get to your book

now, it's pretty remarkable. we have three of the dresses featured in it right here in our studio and all been just -- >> they're big girls. >> eyeing them morning long. so gorgeous. mrs [ applause ] this is the ombre bouquet and your sister helped inspire this. >> growing up my sister was a ballet dancer. i was too, not as good but, you know, so my sister was a ballet dancer, she was a sugar plum fairy so that inspired this in some way, even though i wasn't even thinking about it when i did it but i think my mom even referenced it and was like this reminds me of my sister shannon which i love. the cover of the book, bright and bold and fabulous. >> that dress is every girl's dream. like that is how i would describe that dress and you mentioned your mom. your mom has been a big inspiration. what is it about her that inspires you in your work? >> i mean i think what's great, growing up m

she loved to get dressed. she wore a dvf wrap dress and quite modern and gets free clothes all the time and cruises around the world. >> every mom's dream. have a fashion designer in the family as well. >> exactly. >> speaking of your mom, she is here in the audience right now. >> she's here. [ applause ] you. >> look so great, mom. >> mom, what do you think of your son? his incredible success and what he does and brings to the world. >> it's amazing. it's just been a wonderful ride and he is still the same, kind generous person as always. as you mentioned i get to go on my celebrity cruises and wear my leslie jones red and i'm enjoying the fruits and benefits of it all. >> listen, she got glam this morning. >> robin roberts' makeup artist. >> that's amazing. we love your son too, as well.

continues to give to the wore. in fact, let's move on to this next dress. this apparently is one that taylor swift fell in love with. >> yeah, so i love this because it was in one of my collections, one of my first collections and not everybody loved it in the beginning but taylor swift loved it and wore it in her wonder struck campaign, her first fragrance and a big moment for her and me and what was great, it became kind of an iconic dress and still sell it today six years later. >> it looks like champagne. >> yeah. >> like fun. >> fantasy. it's supposed to look like a dream and have that cloud-like movement. >> this dress made headlines and your mom referenced. leslie jones red. you made it for leslie jones after she said no one would dress her for the premiere of "ghostbusters." >> i love this because in the book there is a lot of pieces that are big and exuberant and this i think is the

dress but smoke the most volumes. a big night for her. i just wanted to give her a "pretty woman" moment and make her look amazing so that's what we did in a simple beautiful just great silhouette. >> there's nothing simple about leslie jones. >> there is not. >> what is it like working with her? i can't imagine how fun those sessions are. >> she is amazing. she is quite boisterous but it's so ton to dress her because i think she really appreciates it but also loves fashion and has a great beautiful body. very tall and can wear a dress which is fun for a designer. we play dress up. >> she wears it well. speaking of red carpet, award season just around the corner. what are you expecting to see on the red carpet? >> there's a lot happening in hollywood, obviously, as we all know so, you know, golden globes are coming up and a lot of the actresses are wearing black to celebrate solidarity and give the voice to the women on the red carpet which i think is amazing but,

to be a lot of black but i still think they're going to be gorgeous and sexy and powerful and excited to see that. >> i wanted to pick your brain for anyone out there because we mentioned this is your ten-year anniversary. >> yeah. >> of being the designer that you are. christian siriano. [ applause ] do you have advice for all of those young people who are trying to break into a difficult industry to break into. >> don't do it. no, i'm just kidding. no, no, it's great. i think if you wake up every morning and love fashion and love clothes, that's what you should do. you just have to work at it and i think it's not all fun and games and celebrities and -- because actually they're quite annoying. ♪ great holiday treats that will make a perfect and personal gift. alex guarnaschelli author of "the home cook" recently stopped by to share some of her best recipes. alex, this is the best and it's my inspiration because homemade and personal makes it special as we can see down there in it's fun to kind of snack as you go, right? you wrap your gifts and you're eating them. that's a win/win but make something homemade and create that real i made this from the goodness of my heart and i ate half of it. >> that way you know it's good. spea

can smell it already. you started with the dark chocolate. tem purred chocolate. >> chocolate makes people clap. it doesn't get its due during the holidays because we're so busy with candy canes so this is melted chocolate that you spread out on marchment or baking sheet and sprinkle the crushed up candy canes on here and spread them out and let it cool. >> and that mint chocolate flavor is so great. >> and break it up and let this cool -- you can pop it in the fridge and make little pieces or top a cake with it or make a tart or little bars and superfun and package it up in little to go boxes. like i said, make double. >> you're saving because you're doing it yourself. this one looks so good. this is kind of a play on a whoopi pie, such a great

you want to just get to the eating. this is a little bit of almond pastry cream and almond extract and a little almonds. i love all the sound effects. what a great audience. i love a hungry audience and make these little sandwiches and the almonds really add a lot of nice crunchy texture and portable. make a nice tin and eat them behind your desk. >> i already snacked on about half of the topping but let's do the strawberry bars. >> you could use raspberries too and baked this crust 20 minutes and add it in, powdered sugar for cornstarch and sugar with jam so we don't often think of mixing jam with fruit but it's a great way to get that richer fruit taste. >> when it's through it looks like this. >> it looks like this and you pour it in there. >> nice. i love it. >> then the topping. have almos

>> less topping than when we started this segment. do you know any holiday snackers? >> then you bake this one, again. >> bake it, cut it into little bars and package that up so good and popcorn which is super fun to do loose like this or you can break it up and roll it into little popcorn balls. >> hot would go into a ball. >> when it's hot and if it cools and gets hard to work with, pop it in a warm oven for 20 to 30 seconds and can make a popcorn house. don't get me started and top it with these little -- you can go deep. >> mine, i'll get to the popcorn ball. thanks for helping us. great stuff. this is beautiful. thank you. watch "iron chef" wednesday nights on food network and get all the recipes on our website. alex, thank you.
