heavy snow and ice. blasting cities from coast to coast this morning. as a pair of winter storms walloped the country. millions facing treacherous driving conditions this christmas eve. >> the roads are starting to get slick. so i gotta be careful. they're starting to freeze over. >> reporter: snow slamming colorado overnight. parts of i-70 forced to shut down for a time. shelters opening to stranden drivers. winter weather alerts issued across the country. 22 states from washington to maine in or expecting hazardous weather. in pennsylvania, slick conditions causing multiple accidents. drivers sliding off the road. cars stalling due to the freezing weather. the traffic slow. >> the ice. that's what makes me nervous. >> reporter: travelers in ohio warned of black ice. overnight, caring swerving on the roads. snow squalls causing low visibility. >> they're coming down a lot heavier than it was earlier. >> reporter: in wyoming, whiteout conditions on the roadways there. this suv practically disappearing in the blizzard.

icy conditions also causing drivers to put on their hazards has they slip and slide across the roadways. after dealing with tough driving conditions, many might get that white christmas after all. with system number yun now moving east of the east coast. cold air is in place for system number two. a white christmas developing here today. enough snow to cover the roadways, if not the sidewalks, too, and the grassy areas. midnight mass maybe an issue from pittsburgh up through cleveland and buffalo. snow there. a coastal low develops tonight through tomorrow morning. this will keep it more of a rain, snow, sleet mix. along the i-95 corridor. places inland. north and west of i-95. a fairly significant snowfall. interior new england. could see in some cases, eight, ten inches. maybe a foot of snow. it looks like it will stick around. look at the cold air diving down. e arct as for a wind chill in

>> the most sacred duty of government is to protect the lives of its citizens. and that includes securing our borders and enforcing our immigration laws. >> reporter: "the new york times" reports trump stormed into the oval office in june, enraged by numbers of immigrants showing how many had received visas to enter the united states since he took office "the time" says one source in the room and another that was briefed later said that 15,000 immigrants from haiti all have aids. last year, candidate trump pledged support to haitian-americans. >> i want to be the greatest champion. i will be your champion, whether you vote for me or not. >> reporter: trump also reportedly said once 40,000 nigerian immigrants had seen the u.s., they would never go back to their huts in afri xap trump widely criticized for comments about other immigrants in the past. >> they're bringing drugs. they're bringing crime. they're rapists.

we're going to get the bad ones out. we're throwing them out of the country. >> reporter: tempers flared. in the meeting of top officials, including secretary of state rex tillerson and john kelly. several people said they did not recall the president using those words. and did not think he had. white house press secretary sarah sanders strongly denied that trump made the remarks. saying in a statement it's both sad and telling "the new york times" would print the lies of their anonymous sources. trump silent on the report. he fired up twitter to attack fbi direeputy director andrew mccabe, who is reportedly requiring in march. saying he's rushing to get full benefits. trump has accused mccabe of bias after his wife's campaign received money from a hillary clinton ally. mccabe consulted at the time with the bureau officials about the contributions. some gop lawmakers also alleging

anti-trump bias. mccabe spent hours on the hill being grilled by congressional committees. for more on the political news, let's bring in chief white house correspondent jonathan karl, in washington, where he'll host "this week." jon, great to see you. >> good to see you. merry christmas, dan. >> yes, merry early christmas. let's talk about the attacks on mccabe. do you see them as a way of discrediting law enforcement officials before any charges are or are not brought by robert mueller? the president said he has no plans to fire mueller. there's this rising anti-mueller chorus on the right. >> there sure is. i don't think this is part of a larger strategy. the president's own legal team has tried to discourage him from making these kind of attacks on the fbi and on the special counsel. i think the president is simply angry about all of this. he -- he in his view, the entire ve

is a witch hunt. if he wanted to run from his gut, he probably would fire the special counsel. but he's been advised against it strongly not just by his legal team but by virtually every republican leader in congress. >> let's talk about the story in "the new york times." about the president's alleged derogatory comments about immigrants. somewhat the likely effect of this? does it rile up those that are already against him? while supporters just dismisit as more fake news? >> the white house is adamantly denying it. you heard what kenneth reported. others in the meeting, including secretary tillerson, chief of staff john kelly, h.r. mcmaster, the national security adviser. all deny that the president used these words. one thing for sure, mary. is that the sentiment here, that there are too many immigrants coming into the country from countries like afghanistan and nigeria.

lifted parts of trumps a travel ban. ordering the administration to look at immigration. the american civil liberties union and jewish service says the current ban prevents people from reuniting with family already legally living in the u.s. in pennsylvania, the fbi and local authorities are trying to figure out why a native of egypt went on a shooting spree, targeting police officers in and around harrisburg friday. they're calling it a terror take. el-mofti was fatally shot by police. four teens in ohio could face homicide charges after throwing a sandbag off of an overpass. that driver struck died saturday from injuries. the four boys just 13 and 14 years old will face a judge next week. in los angeles, the bomb squad responded to a suspicious package addressed to treasury

the package was in a neighbor's driveway with a label on it saying it was from the american people. after a two-hour investigation, it was determined that the package was filled with manure. in miami, panic at mall as holiday shoppers run for cover after some people thought they heard gunshots. the aventura mall was placed on lockdown. then it was evacuated. this morning, police say there is no evidence that shots were fired. they don't know what actually caused that panic. the mall set to reopen this morning for holiday shopping. finally, michael sidemon, a senior from new york's success academy high school. had his heart set on attending tufts university. in medford, massachusetts. watch as he finds out he got accepted. hits hard and fast. will keep you in the bathroom for 12 to 24 hours. it can be difficult to tell the difference between the common cold and the flu. so take a look at these symptoms. with the flu in general, we tend to see high temperatures, severe headaches. body aches. coughs. we tend to think of those as symptoms that go full body and below the neck. the common cold, generally no temperature. sore throat. congestion, coughing, sneezing. symptoms above the neck. >> let's drill down on the flu for a second. what do we know about how bad this flu season is and how effective the vaccine may be? >> it's not looking good. the cdc puts out cases every week. we report them with about a one to two-week delay. as you saw on the map, 12 states in the country reporting widespread flu activity. we expect that. we did not expect the flu vaccine that looks like it is only 10% effective. it is well matched. but something probably hap

in the manufacturing process that's just not making it effective. i want to emphasize to people, 10% is not good. but it's better than 0%. >> what are the best ways to protect ourselves? >> hand hygiene. we say it all the time. it's so important. wash your hands. if you can still get a flu vaccine, get one. they're still available. if you get sick, even though it is so hard during the holiday season, please stay home. it's not only better for you. but bett eter for the people ard you. and do what we do in the hospital at the nurse's station. clean those surfaces with disinfectant wipes. you want to touch all the hot spots. the phones. the doorknobs. the handles. keep everything nice and clean. >> dr. ashton. always weighing in with useful advice. we appreciate it. merry christmas to you, dr. ashton. >> you, too, guys. as we have mentioned, this is a busy weekend in the weather department for a whole lot of reasons. let's get it back to

but of course, all the kids here want to know when we can expect him to arrive in the states. what exactly is santa's path or track? >> we can confirm norad radars and satellites have confirmed that santa and his reindeer and sleigh left the north pole. they're currently making their journey westward. they start at the international dateline. and, they work their way slowly around the world. i know that the number one question that kids have is, when is santa going to be at my house? and the best answer for that is, that we know santa arrives sometime between 9:00 p.m. and midnight. and so, if he has -- gotten to their town, and it's between 9:00 p.m. and midnight and they're not asleep yet, he'll move on to another house. but, as long as they're asleep, then santa will go ahead and deliver his presents. santa will deliver his presents. >> thank you so much, captain scott miller.

which happens to be the royal look at their traditions. what is on tap for today and tomorrow? what has she got ahead of her? >> reporter: well, good morning to you guys. i can tell you that the christmas celebrations with the royal in-laws are now in full swing. prince harry and meghan markle leaving their home and heading to the queen's sprawling sandringham estate. and in keeping with tradition, they'll open presents tonight on christmas eve. >> congratulations. >> reporter: prince harry and his bride-to-be meghan markle putting on a dazzling display. releasing their official engagement photos just in time for the holidays. if you can't get enough of this glamorous couple, fear not. we're about to see them again. >> it's a big deal that the queen has agreed for meghan markle to be the first royal fiance to be at a christmas lunch table. it didn't happen for camilla. it didn't happen for diana.
