making news in america this morning, winter weather making travel treacherous and not just on the roads. >> all of a sudden we started sliding then we started spinning and ended up in a snowbank. >> airline passengers get a scare when their flight goes skidding off the taxiway and near the great lakes some areas are expecting up to four feet of snow. president trump takes to twitter over the holiday vowing to get back to work today with taxes behind him, the big issue he's taking on next and the challenges ahead. this morning, the rush to return on this day after christmas, the top tips to save you time, money

and rain and trying to get anywhere for so many it wasn't just messy, it got downright dangerous. whiteout conditions from upstate new york to maine, massachusetts, western pennsylvania and michigan with visibility so poor, authorities warning drivers to slow down or, better yet, stay home. for some easier said than done. especially when you're trying to fly to your destination and the airport tarmac looks like this. in boston the snow temporarily shut down runways at logan international, the slick conditions being blamed for a close call also. >> are you okay? >> everything is fine. we just skidded on the ice. >> reporter: a jetblue flight while landing hitting a patch of ice spinning and skidding off the runway. >> we were straight then all of a sudden it started fishtailing, and, yeah, it started getting rough. >> once i realized we were going

uh-oh. >> reporter: in a brief straight jetblue confirmed it adding no one was hurt. this the scene is portland, oregon, seeing a white christmas for only the sixth time since 1884 and in the midwest, some residents are waking up this morning to windchills as low as 48 degrees below zero. >> it's cold. cold is cold and you got to adjust. >> reporter: well, here in the northeast it won't get that cold but forecasters say temperatures will drop below zero in some areas and bitter cold will be sticking around for days. diane and gio. >> all right, liz, thank you very much. we'll have a closer look at the forecast for today. coming up -- >> bundling up. >> yeah, you are. it's going to be cold. all right, but first we go to president trump. he's ready to get down to business after spending christmas with his family at mar-a-lago. >> the president tweeted last night, tomorrow it's back to work in order to make

faster than anyone anticipated. now, the president is facing a packed agenda when congress returns in january including a string of challenging issues. >> yeah, abc's kenneth moton is traveling with the president. kenneth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. president trump spent his first christmas as president with the first lady and other family members at his mar-a-lago resort. >> my fellow, americans, melbourne and i are delighted to wish america and the entire world a very merry christmas. >> this christmas season we celebrate our blessings as americans and we pray for peace all over the world. >> reporter: the president and mrs. trump recorded a christmas message to the american people. the president tweeted that video out with merry christmas in all caps. the president is preparing to ring in the new year with an ambitious agenda. first legislative victory in the books after signing that tax bill into law before believing washington. now it's on to infrastructure.

border and immigration. the president is looking to work with democrats on infrastructure to fix roads and bridges but democrats have signaled major pushback on the president's immigration policies. and just a reminder the government is only undered till january 19th after congress passed a short-term funding measure before leaving for the holiday break. president trump anxious to get on the same page as gop leaders. the white house says he invited mitch mcconnell and paul ryan to camp david next week to discuss their 2018 legislative agenda. diane and gio. >> kenneth, thanks. as the president gets back to work he is facing new hostility from north korea. kim jong-un's regime released a statement saying it would be a, quote, pipe dream for the u.s. to believe that north korea will give up its nuclear weapons and if the u.s. wishes to live safely it must abandon its hostile policy toward north korea. the country is also demanding the u.s. provide evidence after announcing the north was behind

spring. all right, diane, the british royal navy confirms it escorted a russian warship through the north sea after the vessel passed near british territorial waters. the uk defense ministry says russian naval activity near there had increased and a helicopter was sent to monitor two others. moscow has not yet commented. one of russian president vladimir putin's top critics has been banned from running in next year's presidential election. navalny is not eligible to run. it's widely viewed as being politically motivated to keep him from challenging putin. now, navalny is calling on russians to boycott the election. time now for a look at your weather forecast on this tuesday morning. >>

through wednesday, locally three to five feet off lake erie, ontario affecting i-75, 94, 90 as well as 81. up to two feet of snow in some areas. cold air punches its way through the northern part of the country and light snow in montana. mixture of snow and rain throughout the pacific northwest. wednesday travel, look for widespread thunderstorms making for poor travel on the gulf coast, the northwest and extreme northeast. i'm accuweather meteorologist paul williams. >> coming up, a peek at how they celebrated christmas on the international space station. also, a post-christmas tradition is mr. to get under way. returning those unwanted gifts. some tips on saving time and money if you're heading back to the stores today. a new warning about spending too much time playing video games. so just how serious can the problem be?

♪ why hang a christmas stocking on a mantel when you can just let them float up to the ceiling? that's the strategy the space station crew went with this year. pretty cool. >> yeah, pretty cool. their gifts actually arrived from earth last month. they were given christmas off. that's good. to talk with their families and enjoy christmas dinner. >> and, of course, float around. >> that's right. now, back here on earth retailers are celebrating. sales in stores and online rose at their best pace since 2011. >> but then there is today when everyone goes to return all those unwanted gifts, so how do we best manage that? abc's rebecca jarvis has some tips.

♪ >> reporter: if santa didn't quite deliver on your wish list don't despair, you are not alone. americans return nearly $90 billion worth of gifts over the holiday season. that's almost a quarter of all returns for the year. but beware, not all return policies are created equal. what do people need to look out for? >> what is the length of a policy? some retailers do 15 days. some retailers don't allow you to return at all. others give you 30 or 45 days. look at the condition of the returns you send back. if the box is open some say you can't take it back and lastly see if there's free shipping. >> reporter: with more than one-third of retailers offering return shipping there is also a chance you can skip that trip to the mall. if you have to return in store, check those gift receipts. >> close to 40% of people who are doing their post-holiday returns will do it on the 26th and the 27th.

this i can do! that was louisa von trapp introducing herself in "the sound of music." she was played by heather menzies urich who was 15 when the oscar-winning musical was released back in 1965. now, menzies-urich was diagnosed with brain cancer just four weeks ago. her family said she passed away over the weekend. heather menzies urich was 68 years old. and police officers in california are mourning the loss of one of their own. andrew camilari died after a suspected drunk driver hit his car on the side of the road speeding under the influence of alcohol and possibly marijuana. he's now in serious condition. the officer was 33 and leaves behind a wife and three children. he joined the force just last year.

for bumping a passenger for a congresswoman. jean-marie simon said they gave her seat to sheila jackson and its computer system showed simon had canceled after a weather delay and upgraded the congresswoman automatically and not because she was a lawmaker but simon denies she ever canceled her seat from houston to washington. the airline has reportedly agreed to give her a $500 voucher. the world health organization is about to recognize a new mental health problem. video games. the organization says it will declare that gaming disorder is the inability to control how often and how long someone plays video games. it says it would mean doctors and insurance companies can use gaming disorder as a diagnosis, however, it does not mean all video gaming is bad. in fact, gaming can improve hand/eye coordination and problem solving abilities when done in moderation.

overnight battling intense flames as an antique store erupts into flames. the situation began last night in alexandria on richmond highway around 9-pm. crews say a fire began in the store's second floor causing the floor to collapse intensifying flames. at one point crews had to be pulled out in order for things to calm down. this response lasted into the early morning hours and is expected to continue into the day. no injuries have been reported.

yet to be determined. this antique center is billed as the oldest and largest center in the entire region. it was built in 1948. and also developing this morning --- one man in police custody believed to be behind the hit and run of a horse and buggy in st. mary's county. our cameras were there as authorities arrested the man returning to the scene after fleeing the crash. police say it happened yesterday evening along a stretch of thompson corner road in mechanicsville. the horse was killed --- the person driving, is at the hospital with serious injuries. as for the driver -- no word on what charges he may be facing. right now, police investigating the shooting death on an 18-year old in silver spring. it happenned sunday night on quebec terrece. police have not named a suspect. two loudoun county sheriff's deputies are recovering, after being shot on christmas eve. it happened on hollow mountain place in sterling.

domestic dispute between a man and his 19-year-old daughter. authorities say when the deputies tried to arrest the man, he pulled out a gun and shot them. the deputies are expected to surive. the suspect, 39-year-old douglas johnson, was arrested, and is being held without bond. he's charged with two counts of attempted capital murder. he's expected in court tomorrow. it's xx and we're just getting started. good morning washington. - dry & cold for post-christmas shopping & travel today - cold sticking around for a while - still monitoring snow chances heading into the last weekend of 2017 today: partly to mostly cloudy. highs: 36-41 winds: nw 5-10 mph tonight: mostly cloudy.
