phillips road. prince george's county police say adults were in the home at the time of the shooting. crews battled a massive fire all night in alexandria, and firefighters are still working on hotspots. john gonzalez has more on the scene. john gonzalez: we have been talking to antique dealers, and customers coming by, checking out the damage for themselves. they are devastated to see the staple in the community is now gone. we have parked near the rear of the business to show you the structure is absolutely gutted. firefighters have been here all morning long dealing with some of the hotspots, some of the flareups. fire investigators at this hour are now going through the charred debris and rubble. if you look at some of the video, the flames were intense. fairfax county

dispatch got a call around 9:15 last night. and began an, intensive firefight. then they had to withdraw because the second floor this is the mount vernon antique center. onhas been here for decades route one in alexandria. in a matter of minutes, destroyed. >> part of the neighborhood as far as i can remember. i have been coming here regularly. i know some of the dealers rely on this place to make a living. it will be devastated. when firefighters arrived, no vehicles were parked in the parking lot. it does not appear anyone was inside. according to the store's website, the -- they were open until 5:00 christmas eve and p.m. closed christmas day. fire investigators are going through the rubble, making sure no one was inside, and still trying to determine what caused this. adrianna:

one left a family and chevy chase homeless. the damage is estimated at more than $100,000. sam sweeney explains why montgomery county firefighters are back there an hour ago talking to neighbors. sam: firefighters left the scene here. they worked all night long to get this fire under control at this house in chevy chase. they came back to hand out these papers that are notifying residents in the neighborhood about the smoke alarm law that goes into effect january 1. these new smoke alarms will last for 10 years. some people forget to change their batteries, even during daylight savings time, and that is one of the main causes for fatalities. we talked with one of the cap with montgomery fire to see why this is so important. >> they have a 10-year battery. there is no maintenance. a lot of times people forget to change the batteries.
