when investigators are saying about the blaze tonight. and the deep freeze not letting up. how some local new year's events are planning to keep you safe and warm as you ring in 2018. now abc 7 news at 11:00, on your side. >> we begin with below freezing temperatures across the country. ,fter a snowy start to the day we are talking temperatures into the teens, and it might feel even colder than that. let's get to meteorologist alex liggitt. it is the wind, right? alex: yeah. we do have some gusty winds right now, up to 20 miles per hour. here is the latest look at reagan national airport, 24 18,ees, northwest winds at making it feel like 10 degrees. other local temperatures, 19 gaithersburg, 23 joint base andrews, 19 winchester, 17 hagerstown. the windchill is the main

forecast at your fingertips. the bitter cold is not going to keep some people from celebrating outdoors tomorrow night. amy aubert continuing our live team coverage from falls church, where they are planning for the frigid temperatures. i that you wish they were warming you right now -- i bet you wish they were warming you right now. amy: absolutely, that's what i wanted to show you. this outdoor chimney is one of six warming stations across the area. i wish we could like it right now. it is one of six throughout the area to bring some warm on a chilly night. twinkling lights line the streets of the city of falls church, just one night before their new year's eve celebration. >> it is a lot of preparation, but once you have it down, you know the routine. amy: keith has worked with watch night since it started 20 years ago. >> the downtown falls church turns into a mini times square. amy: he says they will have live music, a

the arctic blast killing at least one person. , pennsylvania are still digging out after close to six feet of snow fell this week. in michigan, take a look at this pileup involving more than 40 vehicles. no one was seriously injured. the extreme cold causing some places to even cancel their new year's celebrations. not new york. times square preparing to host one million people for when the ball drops. officials are warning revelers, who will be standing outside for hours, to dress appropriately. the nypd fire department bracing for the possibility of medical emergencies. alongside them, a major show of force from law enforcement and unprecedented security efforts taking shape tonight. officers screening hotel and restaurant guests near times square for explosives and weapons. a reminder, metro is open until 2:00 a.m. sunday night for new year's eve, but trains and buses will be running on a sunday schedule.

schedule on new year's day. metro rail will be open monday from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. happening now, crews battling a house fire in montgomery county, flames breaking out in potomac. so intense, walls have collapsed. 75 firefighters are on scene. no injuries were reported. right now, is sterling man is facing charges in connection to terrorism. the fbi raided his home yesterday, leaving with boxes of evidence and him in handcuffs. we got a hold of court documents laying out the accusations. our reporter is live in a neighborhood with reaction from those who saw it all unfold. i imagine they are pretty upset. reporter: i have the court documents in my hand. we are standing in front of the door that was busted into by fbi agents on friday.

allegations with neighbors in the area. although all were curious about the accusations, not everyone wanted to talk to us on camera. those who did were shocked. >> i think it is really scary that we don't know who our neighbors are. >> it is so weird being so close to our home. reporter: jaws dropped when we showed people the long list of accusations surrounding their neighbor, sean duncan. >> i never realized it was this large. reporter: according to court documents, duncan is an american from pittsburgh turned isis sympathizer. our camera was rolling friday night when fbi agents raided his rented sterling townhome. they carried out several boxes of evidence. neighbors watched from a distance. >> i thought it was some type of drug bust. reporter: we know duncan tried to miss -- try to escape through a back door and destroy a thumb drive to obstruct the investigation. some of the evidence in the court documents come from a detained

attack locations in the united states. reporter: duncan's phone history showed he researched how to conduct attacks on u.s. soil and read articles like "how to build a bomb in the kitchen." duncan and his wife planned a secret trip to bangladesh, but were detained while connecting in turkey. >> it is scary, to know that someone lives a football field away for me who could have possibly been building bombs. called two potential relatives of duncan in pennsylvania today. we still waiting to get a phone call back. for these court documents, they don't talk about what happened to duncan's wife on friday, but they do talk about their newborn , who passed away earlier this year. it talks about duncans islamic state twitter account and a whole lot more. if you want to go over these docunt

you will find all the information you need. in sterling, q mccray, abc 7 news. kimberly: i love :00, a homicide investigation and prince george's county. police say a man was shot several times and died at the hospital. this happened in district heights. we are told the suspect was arrested at the scene. today, hundreds gathered for a memorial service for this rest and couple, killed days before christmas. police say scott and buckley fricker were shot to death by their daughter's 17-year-old boyfriend. investigators believe they wanted their daughter to break up with him because of his alleged neo-nazi views. he shot himself and is still incredible condition. the residents of a gaithersburg condo complex are boarded up. a tarp is over what used to be the roof. flames broke out at potomac oak condos this morning when many people were sleeping.

this massive fire is undetermined. fortunately, no one was seriously injured. , a nearbyghes reports elementary school has been turned into a makeshift shelter. >> i can't believe everything is gone. reporter: two days before ringing in the new year, dozens of people are forced to start over. >> i am broken. reporter: towering flames ripped through the roof at the potomac oaks condos, forcing families into the bitter cold. eileen lives on the bottom floor and smelled the smoke. >> it was not hot, but the hallway was filled with smoke. >> we had to get out of the building. we were hearing people yelling. reporter: police and firefighters went door-to-door getting people out. >> the ceiling collapsed in the bathroom, water everywhere. reporter: with snow on the ground, 100 firefighters battled against freezing equipment. they knocked down the

those are the ones that can give the most trouble. alex: i love it because bill calls them the hose tips. the outside spigot, hose bibs. it is really funny. definitely one of those reminders, because you are going to have all kinds of problems the next several days with these temperatures. we are looking at some temperatures in the 20's, some dipping into the teens. 19 gaithersburg, 18 martinsburg, 22 chantilly, 20 manassas. you get the picture, it is really cold. i want to show you a wide look. the majority of the northeast, midwest, single digits from pittsburgh, columbus, indy, chicago. really cold air there, and cold here, too. we are in the 20's, getting a little better air because of the appalachians. we did not have the real arctic air just yet.

overnight. if you spots may get close to single digits. i also want to show this wider view of all the advisories and warnings for the majority of the middle of the country. these are windchill warnings, this darker blue. the lighter blue, wind-chill advisory's as far south as memphis. this area the deep south, hard freeze watch for portions of alabama, mississippi, louisiana, even texas. this is a wide expanse of really deep cold air. we do have our own wind-chill advisory's for the appalachians. they could have wind chills as low as 10 below zero. this is a look at what it will feel like tonight around 11:00, anywhere from single-digit to teens. by early tomorrow morning, we are going -- there are going to be spots that will be below zero. gaithersburg, hagerstown, winchester. not going to get much better tomorrow afternoon.

feel like. around 10 degrees in the d.c. metro, only getting up to around 13 as far as what it will feel like through tomorrow. by tomorrow afternoon/evening, still around 10. back into the single-digit by the time the ball has dropped and we are assuring in 2018. looking ahead, we continue to have deep cold. this is a look at new year's eve as far as servicer temperatures. tomorrow, highs in the mid 20's. with a little breeze, it will feel colder, back around the teens closer to the time the ball drops. i think we will be in the upper teens locally inside the d.c. metro. outside, more likely lower teens. next three days as a whole, 25 tomorrow, lower 20's on monday, still in the 20's on tuesday. i think we will have one day getting into the 30's by wednesday. also watching the potential for a coastal storm. don't have any precipitation
