and the drama kicks into high gear with the return of "the bachelor." season 22 is already shaping up to be unlike any of its predecessors. we'll have a complete wrap up with our senior national bachelor analyst. it is tuesday, january 2nd. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> oh, we forgot the chief senior bachelor global contributor. we're going to start things off with breaking news. passengers were stuck in long lines as customs computers were down for hours. >> this happens as travelers return from the busy holiday weekend. you see some of images we're getting in there. some of the lines were more than four hours long. imagine facing that after coming off the long flight. now travelers complained that they missed connections and were given little information.

a customs agency says the disruption did not affect the standards for security screening, and it does not believe the outage was malicious in any way. the system is back on line and all airports probably have quite a bit of a backup in the system. >> we love the computers when they make things faster, and they can break down, and when they do, this is what happened. >> in addition to that, a lot of people had to worry about weather issues, including temperatures. today from the rockies to the east coast, those temperatures are going to say below freezing again. >> chicago set a record again for new year's day, and the freezin' for a reason plunge was canceled. too much ice. couldn't get to the water. >> that's the reason behind the race. >> hey, don't talk to me, i wasn't ever planning on doing it. yesterday's high temperature, 1 degree above zero. today it will be a balmy 14. >> ah, nice.

couldn't stop the annual mummers parade in philadelphia, a famed parade there, but the crowds were an a little less than previous years. >> understandable. and in western michigan it was too cold for even soap bubbles. they froze to this wand. >> oh. >> somebody tried to blow a bubble and it's frozen solid on top of the bubble wand. >> okay. kind of neat, though. >> let's get the forecast from accuweather's paul williams. paul, what have you got for us? >> good morning, diane, kendis. we are looking for the cold wave to persist. frigid air throughout the northeast. arctic air overtaking the ohio valley region, reaching into the deep south. unseasonably cold weather in jacksonville, houston and jackson, mississippi. look for the coldest air to affect des moines to chicago. an arctic high pressure system in place, but then take a peek at this. no kidding, a blizzard possibly threatening the east coast.

diane, kendis? >> we'll keep an eye on that blizzard. it could be what's called by meteorologists as a bomb. to washington or south of there where investigators from the u.s. are pitching in to help determine the cause of a crash in costa rica that left ten americans dead. officials say, there were some gusty winds in the area when the plane took off. adrian bankert has more. >> reporter: a ntsb team on its way to join authorities to determine why this routine flight crashed. killing ten americans and two crew on board. that plane smashing into pieces in mountainous terrain as it was taking off for the capital of san jose. on new year's eve. an american tourist saw it all from a nearby restaurant. >> oh, my god. >> a really hard left hand

and it was totally sideways and then nosedived straight into the ground. >> reporter: the plane, operated by nature air, the largest carrier in costa rica, the airline has a good safety record but had one crash last year killing one passenger. on board this flight, two rican pilots and this family. bruce and irene steinberg on vacation with their three sons from scarsdale, new york. the family shares on facebook we are in utter shock and disbelief right now. outside their home, their babysitter inconsolable. also killed, mitchell and leslie weiss from tampa along with their teenaged daughter and son. >> you never want it to happen to somebody that you know. and they were a good, good family. >> reporter: coe costa rican authorities say they were good pilots but the winds were so strong. earlier in the day, the seam -- same plane had a delayed landing due to winds. adrian
