record-setting low temperatures and dangerous winds. the high temperature in chicago on new year's day, just 1. in new york city 9 degrees at midnight for the ball drop. hundreds of manatees popping up in the wears new blue springs state park in florida trying to escape the cold. >> the water temperatures drops below 68 degrees they'll search for a warmer water. >> reporter: the cold temperatures relentless from frozen fountains to several spinouts on icy roads. watch as this emergency personnel worker almost gets hit by a car as he slips on the ice. >> afraid to stop somebody and afraid to keep going. >> reporter: so many people layering up to battle the cold temperatures that are feeling more like below zero from the midwest to the northeast. >> cold has affected a lot of things. >> reporter: this family stocking up on water. the water pipes in their home frozen. >>

the way to tampa. ken, diane. >> breaking overnight a computer outage caused long lines at airports across the country. the customs computer system went down leading to lines up to four hours long. the government says national security was not compromised and it does not think this was a malicious attack. but passengers weren't happy. >> i missed my connecting flight but then it was delayed and i'm going to miss it again because i don't know where to go and nobody seems to be able to help me. >> customs and border protections says it's back up running and all airports are online. south korea is offering to hold talks with rival north korea about possible participation in the winter olympics. kim jong-un mentioned that he might be open to sending a delegation to the games held in south korea next month and said it would be a good opportunity to show off his country's status. >> in iran a

anti-government clashes. overnight rioters reportedly tried to storm a police station to steal weapons and the demonstrations are entering a sixth day and started thursday over rising price, high unemployment and corruption. at least 20 people have been killed so far. several others have been wounded and hundreds have been arrested. the president is hoping to get back to business after wrapping up an 11-day stay at his resort in florida. he returned to the white house last night facing an ambitious to do list. he's preparing to roll out his infrastructure plan and work out deals on immigration and government funding even after north korean leader kim jong-un warned that the nuclear button was on his desk and the entire u.s. was within striking distance. the president remained optimistic. >> so we're going to have a great 2018. it's going to be something very, very special. it's all kicking in. we had some pretty good enemies out there but step by step they're being defeated.

coast guard crews rushed to save an 89-year-old man from sinking car in florida. the crew saw the car as it plunged into the waters at a marina in panama city and broke a car window and pulled the man to safety. police say the victim had a medical issue that caused the car to roll off the pier and into the water. he is expected to be okay. a team from the ntsb is now joining the investigation into the crash that killed ten americans in costa reek kachlt they're looking at strong winds as a likely

ruling out possible mechanical problems. the small plane went down killing two american families, a tour guide from wisconsin and two local pilots. the families were bruce and irene steinburg of new york and their three sons from florida, mitchell and leslie weiss also died in that crash. both doctors traveling with their two children. and a southwest airlines flight was forced to return to seattle after experiencing a problem with the nose gear. the plane was headed to baltimore on monday when the mechanical issues cropped up. the pilot had to circle over washington state to burn fuel before landing safely at sea-tac airport. today the suspect in a deadly prank makes his first court appearance. tyler barris faces a judge in los angeles accused of calling in a fake hostage situation to police in wichita, kansas. officers shot and killed an innocent man while responding to that bogus call. barris was convicted of making a false bomb threat in l.a. in 2015. a major fireworks blast in houston was caught on camera. it happened

supposed to be a party to celebrate the new year. well, that changed when one firework landed on the trunk of a car and set off 600 more. >> wow. >> no one was injured. california's first marijuana stores are open for business. it's the largest state now and the latest state for that matter to legalize the purpose of marijuana for recreational use. 90 retailers have the aren'ts but to stores in los angeles or san francisco. those cities haven't worked out their local licensing regulations yet. >> the new year also brought about some bigger paychecks for low wage workers in more than three dozen states and cities. the pay increases range from 35 cents in michigan to $1 in maine. other states will have smaller automatic increases that adjust the minimum wage to keep pace with inflation. the federal minimum wage is still $7.25 an hour. when we come back the superstar singer who says she might look different after keeping a serious injury a secret. also ahead, banning

and support of the community and of the nation. never in my world would i have imagined this. >> the gunman died sunday as well. he was an iraq war veteran and graduated law school at the university of wyoming. the school warned students when he posted facebook rants. police in texas are looking for a man who may be connected to the disappearance of two girls. they were discovered missing when police went to their home north of austin on a welfare check. instead the cops found a dead woman. the girls are age 7 and 14. the 44-year-old man lived with them and is described as a person of interest. there is now an amber alert for the girls. gretchen carlson who was miss america back in 1989 is the new leader of the pageant. carlson takes over as chairwoman following the former ceo's resignation. last month e-mails surfaced which included controversial comments about past contestants' looks and

carlson left fox after suing its former chairman for sexual harassment. overnight she tweeted she was honored to take on her new role. hundreds of women in hollywood are backing a new initiative to fight sexual harassment called time's up. the goal to fight abuse and promote workplace equality. top actresses behind time's up include reese witherspoon and nicole kidman as well as jennifer lawrence. the initiative includes a multimillion dollar legal defense fund to help women who do not hold positions of power. country singer carrie underwood is revealing she suffered more than a broken wrist when she fell in november. in a post to her fan club she announced she also needed more than 40 stitches on her face. underwood said she's'sing but might look a bit different the next time fans see her. she added she's grateful it wasn't much worse. nhl players won't be at the olympics for the first time since 1984. that means there is a chance for

reporting that nationwide protests in that country again turned deadly overnight. in the last 12 hours-- at least 9 more people were killed during demonstrations in the street. that raises the death toll to at least 20 people over the last 6 days. state tv is reporting that 6 people were killed today during a riot at a police station. police say the rioters were attempting to steal guns.

the investigation into a deadly plane crash in costa rica. the n-t-s-b, now assisting investigators looking into what caused that plane to crash with ten americans onboard. the steinberg family -- has ties to our area. the mother -- irene -- included on her facebook page -- that she is originally from potomac, maryland. and one of her three sons was a student at johns hopkins university. all five members of the steinberg family died along with another family from florida. the plane was headed for the country's capital -- but crashed into a mountainous wooded area about 10 minutes after taking off. investigators are still working on finding out the cause -- but we do know there were heavy winds in the area at the time. right now... police in spotsylvania county, trying to track down three thieves who broke into a gun shop, and stole a bunch of guns! take a look at this surveillance footage of one of the men. it was taken right after breaking into "high velocity arms" in fredericksburg around 3 a-m saturday. the men smashed out a door - smashed open cabinets - and made off with the guns. in the day ahead--
