why the rumor mill seems to get it wrong -- way wrong. >> reporter: treacherous conditions ahead of a major storm. a whiteout in western new york causing havoc on the roads. >> miles of traffic. miles. >> reporter: a stretch of interstate 90 near buffalo shut down after this massive chain reaction crash involving more than 20 vehicles. at least one killed and another person seriously injured. >> you couldn't see a gosh darn thing in front of you. everything was blurry, it was a complete whiteout. >> reporter: in maine, the fuel in these school buses gelled, causing them to be undrivable. crews spending the day draining the gas tanks. in indiana, a man chipping away at a car, after it got stuck in the street. >> trying to break it loose. not workin' very well. >> reporter: the mighty mississippi in st. louis turned to ice. also outside this hotel, this fountain turned to ice.

and the overnight lows will stay or feel like the teens in the deep south. for the northeast, the cold eases slightly for us, as we watch out for heavier squalls on wednesday. but then everybody will be clogged by this nor'easter. we'll see 12-24 inches of snow throughout portions of the northeast and three to six near virginia beach. erielle, kendis? now to words reminiscent of the cold war days. president trump sounding off against north korean leader, kim jong un, about america's superior arsenal, the president tweeted, i, too, have a nuclear button, but it is a much bigger and more powerful button than his, and it works. that came after kim jong un taunted the u.s. about the nuclear button on his own desk. the north opened a l

korea. seoul offered to hold talks with the north after kim said his country might take part in the winter olympics. and president trump is threatening to cut off aid to palestine. he tweeted that the u.s. pays hundreds of millions a year and get no appreciation or respect. they have expressed outrage over the proclamation of jerusalem being the capital of israel. and president trump is taking aim at his own justice department implying that it's quote, part of a deep state. calling for the prosecution of a top hillary clinton aide and a former fbi director. cecelia vega has more. >> reporter: president trump kicked off 2018 with a tweet storm, attacking his own justice department as a deep state secretly working to undermine his presidency. he also lashed out at huma abedin, suggesting she should be punished for her handling of certain government e-mails.

deep state justice department must finally act. also on comey and others. does this administration believe that the deep state is a real thing? that there is this shadow government out there actively plotting to sabotage him? >> look, the president finds some of those actions very disturbing, and he thinks that we need to make sure, if there is an issue that it's looked at. >> reporter: and he has been publicly encouraging the justice department to investigate the clintons and some of his other political enemies. the department's inspector general now investigating the fbi's handling of the hillary clinton e-mail probe. he says he's uninvolved with that investigation but says i have absolute right to do what i want to do with the justice department. cecelia vega, the white house. the clinton camp pointed out that the e-mail was investigated with to wrongdoing found. they say the president tweets about the clintons or associates every time he needs a distraction.
