the beach. hour, the winter storm, bomb cyclone, whatever you want to call it, is still pounding ocean city, maryland. island, all morning long, we have been seeing tremendous breezes, gusts blowing the snow. blizzard conditions right now. in possible to the outside right now without glasses of some sort. the snow plows have made one pass. as you see places like this where it appears to be pavement, people came out and started to drive around the town. coming across snow drifts like this one, this one is about a foot and a half deep or so,

front wheel drive cars can handle. how windy is it? just look at that snow. it is unimpressive storm. the accumulations not be all that great, probably about eight to 10 inches, but the story is the wind, the very bitter cold. is certainly feeling the effects of this winter storm. in ocean city, maryland, brad bell reporting. our coverage continues with john gonzalez live in calvert county. john, nothing like ocean city, thank goodness, but it is still a pretty white scene where you are. john: absolutely, adrianna. we have about four inches of snow on the ground here in calvert county. it is hard to tell if it is still coming down because of the tremendous wind. i want to show you something over here. walk with me here. not only do we have a private contractor here trying to clear the

parking lot -- why he is wearing shorts, i don't know, but he has been trying to get his car out of the parking lot for 10 minutes now. it is not a ton of snow, but it is slick, if it is really compounded with the fact that the wind has been extraordinary out here. the have been hearing that term a lot this morning, the bomb cyclone, well, we have definitely been feeling the effects. take a look at the snow is up with some of the videos, the snow whipping around. we have been hearing it, feeling it all day long. it has really caused quite a problem for some of the folks who have been out, folks trying to get to their destination today. we talked to some of them here in calvert county. >> you can see me right now. i even slid trying to pull in here. we have a truck, but it is not the best. when i say the term "bomb cyclone," what does that mean to you?

[laughter] and back here live, the gentleman with the pickup truck is still stuck. at the moment, he walked into the 7-eleven, maybe to purchase some kitty litter to get some traction under the back tires. a littleent is still bit of a mess under some of these parking lots. the main thoroughfares are pretty clear, for example, route 4 is pretty clear. the secondary roads are still a mess. the big problem, tonight, into the overnight hours and into the morning hours will be the re-freezing. i will send it to suzanne kennedy who is in oxon hill, maryland. suzanne. suzanne: john, we have seen the snow taper off behind me. you can see the roadways are damp but they are drive. if you look at the ground here, you can see not much snow. we were able to drive easily in the dusting

on the ground by the snowfall that came overnight. earlier today, some people that have problems, not just here in prince george's county, but also in charles county. slick road conditions in prince george's county made for a treacherous morning commute. a tractor-trailer jackknifed on route 301 southbound in brandywine, while this toyota slid into another car in clinton, leaving front ands -- ends damage. >> it was better than i thought it would be. suzanne: he got up quickly because of his job. >> i had to take care of my mother and my sisters, go out and clear all some cars. county, in charles crews used a plow, backhoe, and a few shovels to make quick work of this office building parking lot. >> it is windy out here. it is getting cold. shoveling snow and just clearing the parking lot so people can get to work, you know. suzanne: it is

to name a few. take a look outside at reagan national. you can see snow on the ground and snow on the planes. earlier a we showed show the snow team at the airport hard at work ever since early this morning, working in that frigid cold to deice the planes before takeoff. one runway was closed as crews worked to clear the snow away. right now, more than 3100 flights have been canceled today according to fligh flightaware.com. flightaware telling us that ewark is the main with cancellations. others are jfk, laguardia, and norfolk. we found others trying to get out but are delayed because of the storm. care were already in the coming here when we got the notification, delayed, so we are stuck here for six hours waiting

it home today. if you have a flight scheduled, the airlines are being flexible. all the major carriers have issued a travel alert. they are waiting to see if you need to reschedule for today and tomorrow, but it best advice is to call ahead to your airline before you head to the airport. they are expecting cancellations to continue throughout the day. we are live at reagan national, ryan hughes, abc 7 news. adrianna: now to the school closures. most in the d.c. area canceled classes thing or started late, but that's scribbling to find childcare, even though the area butnot have been up at -- that left parents scrambling to find childcare, even though the area may not have been that bad. reporter: some parents frustrated, even a bit angry. at lee highway, traffic moving smoothly now that the roadway is clear. check

coverage continues to john gonzalez in calvert county. ihn: plenty of snow, and would like to say things are calming down here in southern maryland, but quite frankly it is hard to tell because the wind is so brutal. i believe it has stopped snowing, but the snowflakes or snow is still flying around, but the wind is still whipping averaging around. here is what we have at calvert county on the ground -- a good couple of inches. it is the wind that has really made this quite an issue this morning for some folks that are out and about. you know, it is a dry, fluffy snow. this morning, we tried making some snowballs. it is definitely not the kind of snow where you will get some snowballs, but it is making visibility difficult today because of the wind that is blowing around. some of the major thoroughfares look pretty good at this hour. that right there is route 4. you still have some slush
