a frozen pipe bursting at jfk airport. three inches of water on the ground taking out a terminal that services delta and 30 international airlines. >> it was just a mad house. there was like pushing of people out and nobody was moving. everyone is like confused. >> reporter: the electricity shut off. flights delayed and passengers stranded as baggage piled up nearly as far as the eye could see. >> luggage everywhere. people everywhere. there's no space to walk. >> reporter: this new emergency coming as the airport struggles to get up to speed after shutting down during last week's massive snowstorm. the ripple effect nearly immediate with these long lines forming at miami's airport. in the southeast and parts of the midwest preparations overnight for freezing rain, fears of icy roads have closed schools from atlanta to the carolinas to new jersey. farther north

mt. washington was the second coldest place on earth at minus 90. so cold these bubbles froze and a world away a different extreme. down under in sydney where it's summer they're sweltering. the temperatures hitting 117 degrees. the hottest day in nearly 80 years. sounds like we should be making a trip to sydney at this point but back to jfk airport, that terminal is back open this morning and finally a warm-up is on the way. the forecast in just a few minutes. we turn to washington now. former white house chief strategist steve bannon is trying to make amends backing away from his comments in that bombshell book. meanwhile, one trump adviser got so heated while defending the president on cnn, he had to be escorted away by security. abc's lana zak has more on all of this. good morning, lana. >> reporter: good morning to you, maggie and kendis. president trump is pushing back against allegations that many

questioned his mental fitness writing on twitter, quote, throughout my life my two greatest assets have been my mental stability and being like really smart. president trump on twitter is calling himself a genius and a very stable genius at that after allegations in the new book "fire and fury" question his mental fitness. the president's cia director asked to respond on "face the face". >> the president said he is a stable genius. is he? >> i'm with the president nearly every day. we engage in complex conversations about some of the most weighty marys facing the world. >> reporter: author michael wolff claims members of his inner circle have brought up the 25th amendment, the mechanism to remove a president from office. here he is on "meet the press." >> so the 25th amendment is a concept that is alive every day in the white house. >> reporter: current presidential adviser stephen miller fought against that claim leading to a heated exchange with jake tapper. >> i'm trying to get to the issue of the presid

>> i'm getting to the issue of your fitness. >> being cut off and according to a source at cnn escorted out by security. >> wasted enough of my viewers' time. thank you, stephen. as republican lawmakers call for jeff sessions to resign -- >> reporter: over the weekend steve bannon the source of many of the most damaging accusations is trying to repair relationships releasing a statement saying i regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding don junior has diverted attention from the president's historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency. now, bannon is not denying that he called that 2016 meeting at trump tower between the president's son, campaign officials and that russian lawyer, quote, treasonous, but he's trying to clarify that he was directing those comments at then campaign manager paul manafort and not at the president's son. maggie, kendis. >> lana zak, thank you very much. north and south korean diplomats are hours away from their first high life level talks in more than two years taking place at this border

village and come days after president trump said he would be able to be open to talking with kim jong-un. the u.n. ambassador nikki haley clarified that sunday saying before any talks with the u.s. can happen north korea must stop testing missiles and be open to ending its nuclear program. a abc's martha raddatz is in seoul, south korea where she found people are hopeful. >> reporter: and while the topic of tuesday's meetings will be lipped to the north's participation in the upcoming olympic games, many we talked to hope those talks eventually expand. >> today is kim jong-un's birthday. he's believed to be turning 35. some believe the occasion could prompt another missile launch. if that happens south korea is expected to cancel tomorrow's talks. and staying in the region u.s. navy vessels right now helping to search for dozens of people missing after two ships collided off the coast of china. one of the ships was an oil tanker from iran which burst into flames as you can see there. 32 crew membe

the extent of the environmental damage remains unclear. all of the chinese crew members on the other ship have been rescued. the largest auto-related recall in u.s. history has now grown even larger. takata has added more than 3 million air bag inflators to its order bringing that recall up to 72 million. 14 automakers are affected by the new recall. the devices can send shrapnel flying when the air bags are deployed. at least 20 people have been killed. our website has full detail. >> a look now at your monday weather. good morning, well for the northeast we're still expecting wintry conditions but at least warmer this time around. look for snow in burlington, buffalo, a good chunk of the ohio valley region and staying a bit icy down towards the d.c. region. keep in mind we're looking for the snow to cover the northeast and then icy mix throughout the ohio valley region and

orbit. spacex guided the first stage rocket booster back to earth. it'll be reused. it hopes to set a record this year for number of launches. a search is under way for a missing sports reporter that covers texas a&m football. courtney roland was last seen after a football camp in houston saturday around midnight. she texted her roommate saying she was worried she was being followed a by man in a truck. roland's mother also says she received a cryptic text from her daughter's phone but there has been no sign of her. senator rand paul says his recovery from an alleged attack in november has been a living hell. paul claims he was attacked by his neighbor. he talked about his current condition and long recovery which he describes as a tough go. >> you know, a little better each day. it was sort of i guess a living hell for the first four or five weeks, you know, difficulty, couldn't get out of bed without

he reportedly said, she would absolutely do it. passengers on a cruise to the bahamas are describing a vacation nightmare. after the captain decided to sail through last week's winter storm. many of the 4,000 passengers say they thought they were going to die. the norwegian cruise liner hit 30-foot waves on the way back to new york. water was pouring down the stairs and anything left unsecured went flying. >> i just sat there holding my children like i can't believe i brought my kids here. and thinking that i don't think we're going to make it back. >> reporter: the ordeal lasted two days. norwegian has apologized but yet has not offered any refunds or credits. more concerns about the flu virus. nearly every state is reporting widespread flu activity. see the map there. california has been hit hardest with at least 27 people under the age of 65 dying this season compared to just four last season. now, doctors say it's not too late to get your flu

of idlib. this was the scene overnight-- as witnesses ran into the blast zone, looking for survivors. the explosion damaged buildings and overturned several cars. at least 100 people are reported wounded, some with critical injuries. now - a seven on your side consumer alert - more than 3-million takata air bag inflators are being added to the already massive recall. we've been reporting on these faulty airbags - which can explode and send shrapnel flying. at least 20 people have been killed worldwide - and more than 180 injured. so far - 19 automakers have recalled up to - 69 million inflators in 42 million vehicles. the latest recall covers certain 2009, 2010 and 2013 cars.
