tv   New Day Cleveland  FOX  March 18, 2016 10:00am-11:00am EDT

10:00 am
(light piano music) - welcome to new day cleveland, i'm natalie herbick and we are in the beautiful town of gahanna, ohio. if you're not familiar, it's just outside of columbus and it is five minutes away from what has become known as the rodeo drive of the midwest. i'm talkin' about easton town center. but one of the neatest things about this town is that it is ohio's herb capital, can you believe that? and you might be
10:01 am
is that possible?" well, right here is a woman who can explain all of that to us, laurie, so good to meet you. - hi, nice to meet you too. - thanks for having us in town. - hey, we're glad to have ya. - it is beautiful here and i know that on top of all the neat attractions that you have to offer, you're known for your herbs. - we are. - how is that? well, it was 1972, gahanna was really just an up and coming city, it was a lot of farmland, but it was still starting to develop. there was a longtime resident by the name of bunnie geroux, and bunnie was really tired of hearing developers say, "gahanna's just farmland trying to be a city." so she decided gahanna needed to be known for something. we have a beautiful state park, we have a ton of park area, beautiful areas, and she decided it should be the herb capital. so she launched a grassroots effort, went down to the statehouse, and in 1972 gahanna was designated the herb capital of ohio. - and you have really done so much with it, so much, in fact, that it is now, there's a trail, technicially. - well, the gahanna convention and visitor bureau, yes, in conjunction with
10:02 am
created the herbal trail. it was part of the 40th anniversary of the everybody wants to stop in our office and say, "i want to walk the trail," but it's so much more than that, it's really an experience. - what is the trail? - the herbal trail is comprised, right now we have 45 business partners, everything from restaurants to shops to attractions to salons, and it offers, really just a variety of things where herbs are incorporated. so, there's a culinary aspect of it, we have restaurants that offer herb-infused dishes or cocktails. we have shops that sell things with herbs in them, like we have honey grove botanicals, where she sells organic bath supplies and things like that, that incorporate herbs. we have a few salons in town where so they city has really embraced that and created all of these different experiences. - so how does one jump on board and walking trail of this? - well, if you go to our website, visitgahanna.com,
10:03 am
your own itenerary. we even offer a hotel package, the herbal trail experience, and you can stay in one of our gahanna hotels and really craft your own experience. if you're a culinary person and you're a foodie and you like to try out all the really cool places, you can pick the restaurants that offer some kind of herbal offering. if you are an outdoor person, we have wonderful parks where there's herbal gardens and you can visit those. if you are somebody who's into health and wellness, you can spend a day at the salon, get an herbal massage and experience things like that. - well, we are gonna get to all of these different exciting herbal things first, i'm heading right across the street. she already knows where i'm going right now. her eyes lit up, why? because it is probably one of the best bakeries around? - columbus's best bakery every year, yep. - that's where we're headed. (light guitar music) well now i think
10:04 am
raves about this place. we are at koko tea salon and bakery, and i see this young gentlemen already pulling out, what are, all of your cupcakes over there? - [voiceover] yes we do over 120 flavors, and we change them every day. - [natalie] well, this is ava, this is your whole place here, you must be so proud. - [ava] thank you. - [natalie] of what you have accomplished because, i mean, you've been on the food network even. - yeah, we were, but i'm really more proud about we've been voted columbus best bakery in columbus two years in a row, it's the columbest best bakery. and then we've also been best dessert in gahanna, which is our hometown. - [natalie] what else do you make here? - [ava] we do a little bit of everything. if it's sweet and yummy, we do it. we have our bakery case where we do coconut macaroons and raspberry bars and brownies, and then we also can specialize in parisian macaroons, which is kind of the next big thing after cupcakes. - what put ya on the best
10:05 am
is there one particular item? cupcakes, and it was probably our red velvet and we use beet juice to color it, we don't use any dyes. so people started coming in for the cupcakes and then they started trying all of our other goodies. so they tried our macaroons, and that's probably what's kept the momentum going, because they're amazing as well. - [natalie] are these the cake pops? - [ava] yes. about over here? - those are our new twists. we're open for breakfast now, we open at eight in the morning. - [natalie] so that's what the cute little front room is? you can either come in here and get some little snacks and eat or you have breakfast? - [ava] exactly, so we have muffins and scones and danish, we have, like i said, our new little twists, it's all kind of grab-and-go. you know, everybody's so busy now, sometimes you don't have time to sit down. - absolutely, absolutely. and what a great idea, with us coming down from cleveland, we can just pack some of the stuff up to go and take it back with us. - absolutely. - now i know you're a stop on the herbal tea trail? - yes we are.
10:06 am
would have something to do with it, over here? - yes, we have amazing teas as well. they're hand-blended locally and then, also, we use a lot of the teas as infusions in our baked goods. so, one of our most popular baked goods is our truffleberry lavender cupcakes. so we get our berries locally as well, we go out and we actually pick them ourselves, or i make my friends get in the car and drive 'em out there and they can pick 'em. - how did you get involved in all of this? did you learn at a young age? - yeah, actually my nana taught me how to bake. she was an amazing baker, and i was a very picky eater when i was little, and i didn't like your typical buttercreams, i thought they were too sweet, and so she developed this icing for me, and she called it a silk icing, and that's, i think, what really put us on the map. i mean, our icing's amazing, it's really light and moussey and you taste the flavors in it. i think a problem with baked goods sometimes
10:07 am
it's all about the sugar. - i would totally agree with you because i'm more of a salty than sweet because of that. i don't like too much sweetness. - mhm andd so what's really nice about our icing is, it's not a really sweet. it's a little bit of that you put in there, those 120 flavors we do, they really shine through that way. - and it all goes on in this kitchen back here? - tiny, itty bitty yeah, about the size of your closet. - how do you do it all and get it out? because i can't imagine how many people come through that door every day. - well, we're very efficient and we're a very close group here, so we don't mind that we're kind of on top of each other all the time. - it's so sweet, it's so cozy, and you really will find just about everything you have. now, did i miss anything over here? that's all the same, right, that's just tea? - yup. - all right, but what i did miss is what's in my hand. i'll tell you that, and that is the bubble tea. so, i feel like you can't leave without having a delicious bubble tea. - i'm from hawaii originally, and so that's kind of part of our culture there, and so these are authentic hawaiian bubble teas, and they're amazing. - it's a staple,
10:08 am
- thank you, thank you. - delicious, everything in here just looks so scrumptious, and i know that people are gonna be stopping here to come and pick something up to go, if not to sit and relax here, and eat as well. - thank you so much, i appreciate that. - have you heard of a little winery, wyandotte winery? - yes. - i hear it's an amazing, unique experience, and we're gonna head there right now. - all right. (light guitar music) - [voiceover] wyandotte winery was the first winery in central ohio, it's open in 1977. we have a lovely variety of wines. we've got probably a dozen different wines. dry to sweet, red, white and we do some lovely 100% fruit wines. including an apple wine that's made from apples from apple hill orchard, mansfield, ohio. so it's a custom blend of five different apples. it's really interesting. it goes very nicely with baked brie en croute. back in the day when i
10:09 am
with five small children, one of my sisters told me that i was just too smart to be only a stay at home mom. that i needed to do something important. i believed her and so i decided to start a home based business, and i was in westville, ohio and i started a business called gourmet gifts and i made gourmet liquor cakes. like rum pecan, almond amaretto, and chocolate kahlua. i did sell the business so i sold it myself and as soon as we he's like, "do you think you can make wine cakes?" so yes, now i make wine cakes. a wine cake is like a rum cake but instead of rum it's got wine. it's got a glaze on the outside that's made with the wine and of course it's used when you bake the wine too. we bring in grapes or juice from other places. when we bought the place, robin and i bought the place in 2006 and
10:10 am
was no grapes on the property. there never had been. in fact, 30 years ago there was rhubarb on the property, and they made rhubarb blind but no grapes. so i thought, "oh my gosh somebody's gotta plant "some grapes." so of course that went to me. i did a lot of research and i found a brand new french american hybrid from the university of minnesota. the marquette grape, and it's cold hardy to 34 degrees below zero. it'll make a nice dry red wine similar to shiraz and during that polar vortex when many wineries lost all or a great portion of their vines, i didn't lose any. right now my favorite wine is white roses because it's getting to be summer and it's a lovely blend... chardonnay and vidal blanc and gewu rztraminer and riesling. it's just a lovely blend
10:11 am
great white summer wine. tuesday through saturday from one to seven are our regular tasting hours. we have extended hours on friday evening when we live music and do pizza on the patio and you wouldn't believe the people that show up for that. it's really cool. our back patio makes you feel like you're not in columbus anymore. - just one more little reminder, the winery is in the middle of a neighborhood so you might think you're going the wrong way but you're probably not, just follow the signs. okay a couple more things i wanna mention real quick about koko's tea salon and bakery. ava you do have free samples. - everyday. - everyday, is this the red velvet? - that is the red velvet i was telling you about. - this is what she was raving about. and on top of it you have gluten free? - yes everything in the bakery is gluten free. - everything's gluten free. - and then we also have vegan options as well. - sold. more from gahanna after the break.
10:12 am
10:13 am
10:14 am
welcome back to out road trip to gahanna. well, as we mentioned this is the herb capital of ohio, so it's only fitting that we made a stop here at the ohio herb education center. brooke, it's all about teaching people a, where the herbs come from, how to use them. i mean really anything you could ever imagine right? - yeah that's our whole mission is education. we teach people all the great things that you can do about with herbs. so whether that's tea drinking, or medicinal or if it's gardening or a craft. there's all different things
10:15 am
and we try to teach people that. - so when people first walk in, they come into this beautiful little store where they can shop just a little bit. what all do you have in here? - so we try to get as much locally made things as possible. but we have a lot of tea drinking, things that you can do to make tea. so we have glass french presses, we have lovely mugs and things like that. so we have a lot of locally made things. so we have bath salts, we have lotions. we have all different kinds of things. - [natalie] it smells so good over here you just take that in, oh it's incredible. - i'm guessing it's the soaps that i'm smelling. - [brooke] yes, yeah and we try to cater to everybody. we have things for a mom, we have things for dad, we have things for kids, we have for anybody. - baby rum. baby rum, that's it. oh that's interesting. - yeah it's face wash brick for men. we try to carry things again for men so this is one of things. smell that it smells amazing. and that's usually from the bay leaf. - oh that smells great. - you know the thing they usually have in cooking. - yes. - yeah, that bay leaf fresh yeah. - honey, i mean what else. those are the loose leaf herbal teas.
10:16 am
loose leaf herbal teas. we have a great product out of athens, herbal sage. we actually also do our own, package our teas. and we also have infused honey's. and if you've ever had infused honey... if you like the taste of honey-- - [natalie] i love it. - [brooke] just add 100 times when you add herbs. so we have everything from sage, honey to lemon, lemon thyme honey, to bee balm honey. which is nice and spicy. - and i know this is just the beginning. this is the shop, but you mention that you are teaching. this is an education center. - this is true. - you have a back little house where you give some classes too. could we head back there? - yeah lets go on back. - [natalie] i wanna check this out. i just love the building itself, the house itself. this must be one of the oldest ones around. - [brook] it is, this building itself actually used to be a doctors office at one point. it was a butcher shop. and then for years it just kind of sat as a storage area and then we had this idea of wanting to make it into a giant shed, and
10:17 am
a great idea. so they recycled pretty much everything in this building that you can see. so it's really nice. - [natalie] so it's a drying shed now i'm guessing, that's what we have over here. - [brooke] yeah the city has various different gardens around the town and we teach a class called drying days where you can come out and learn how to properly harvest herbs and you can come out back here and learn how to dry them. and drying's like a really hard technique, people don't really think of it as such but again it's really interesting. and you can see everything from, these are chive blossoms. - can you dry just about anything? as far as herbs go. - yeah i tend not to dry so much basil. basil's a little hard. but anything that has flowers like this is chives. this is spearmint, this is fennel, and this is russian sage. so you can try and dry it you just have to make sure the conditions are right and this shed makes the conditions right. - so conditions are obviously everything. i knew the drawing upside part but that's about it. (chuckles)
10:18 am
- these are examples of different classes. we teach people about how to contain their garden with herbs. rosemary here is the official herb of gahanna. it represents friendship and a remembrance. so we hope people come to gahanna and remember their stay here. we did a terrarium class, where you can make little miniature worlds of plants, which is kind of really cool. we do tea classes, where people learn about appreciation for tea. this is a tea ball, which a hand sewn flower and tea leaves that had been hand sewn and then they pop open when they add hot water to them. and you drink it. - so how do people sign up? or if they're coming down to visit you guys, how does it work? - well you can check out our website and we have a list of various classes that we have and then you can either sign up online or you can the city or call the herb center and we can sign you up. we also do private classes, so we have lots of large groups that'll come and we've done private classes for them too. - i think you've sold me and if it's okay with you i'd love to go take a
10:19 am
love to have you. - [natalie] all right i think barb's up there waiting for me. - [brooke] she is, oh okay. - [natalie] yup. - i'd like to introduce you to barb. she is the honey grow botanicals queen basically. i should just call you honey even though your name is barb right. you teach classes here at the ohio herbal education center but i know you do a whole lot more and you have a great line to top it off. what are you all about? i feel like there's so many different areas to your expertise. - right, well we started doing things just buying things at the grocery, buying things as close to nature as possible. we created a product line of natural products. soaps, soy candles, bath and body products, and it was you know started from scratch and so what i'm here today and what i teach at the herb center is how you can go to the grocery store, do it hands on yourself. buy things from the grocery that you'd find there and make it yourself. - interesting, so lets get started here. - so what i'm gonna make
10:20 am
and yogurt facial mask. honest to goodness-- - [natalie] oh i'd wanna eat that. - you honestly can and that's the thing. you want it to be as close to nature as possible. so we're gonna take this oatmeal, put that in and you can do it. the nice part about this is it's a one time thing, you don't have any preservatives. i'm gonna add a little yogurt, just so that it sticks together well. add a little more honey. honey is antibacterial and moisturizing, so are all these other ingredients. - [natalie] okay so antibacterial moisturizing. the yogurt, what does that do? - the same thing, it's a milk base and creates a nice moisturizing and oats is a humectin. - okay. - and so we mix this together. make it nice, like a paste, and then this goes on the face. now if you wanna enhance it, we've got avocado, you can add an oil, you can add water. i've got strawberries if you wanna make a pumpkin
10:21 am
are so great for the skin. - now so you teach classes here. - yes. - you have everything that people can buy online is it? - i do absolutely. there are folks that'll say, no i don't want to make it, i want you to make it. and so we have products, i have an oats, milk and honey facial there. a strawberry and yogurt facial there. just so that it makes it a little bit easier and it's a just add water kind of a thing. whereas you know, folks like me i like to do it homemade and make it myself. you know not that person. - so do you travel for... i mean-- - i absolutely do. - and now we're talking cleveland. do you think maybe you'd even go up there? - i absolutely could. - you could? - yeah absolutely. - so you pack everything up with you and then you teach people how to use everyday things. - how to do it, hint you a recipe and say it's totally hands on don't be afraid, you could do it yourself. - how did you start doing this because i feel like you know you can teach everyone else but for you to have to really start from scratch and on your own. and i did and i started 21 years ago doing this and researching the library and the bookstores and saying
10:22 am
they called it new age. that's not new age, our moms were doing it, out grandma's were doing it. and so that's kind of where it started. it started from scratch, a lot of study and research. - [natalie] you can get any of her products online, you can call her up to make sure that you schedule a little teaching class. or you can come here to the ohio herb education center and buy her products here too. - yeah absolutely. - and they're gonna be somewhere else aren't they? - yes. actually whole foods is gonna be opening here in easton we're going to be going in the whole foods store. - and you'll be hitting all the whole foods near us too. - yeah, we have a-- - very exciting. very, very exciting. really neat stuff i'm really impressed. - thank you. - thanks for the little lesson. - sure thing. - we're just getting started here in gahanna, and we will be back with
10:23 am
10:25 am
we're taking on this road trip trying a new city. how about latin american food here at arepazo. amanda this place is packed. - yeah. - is it always like this? - it is very much packed like this everyday. - well i mean the locations great you're just off the main drag there. - [amanda] right we're just a block off creekside. - okay and the food though itself looks like quite a draw. i'm guessing these are some of the main things that when people come in here they're asking for. - [amanda] yeah absolutely. this is a traditional latin american dish called papillon creojo. it's got shredded beef,
10:26 am
and arepitas. - [natalie] is that what arepitas are? - [amanda] yeah an arepita is like a-- - [natalie] what is that? - [amanda] it's like a corn fritter, deep fried corn meal. so it's really tasty. - yeah they're also hard to get. there we go. - [amanda] yeah they're really tasty. - wow. that looks like a healthy dish. - [amanda] it is a really healthy dish yeah. minus maybe the deep-friedness right there. (laughing) - [natalie] of course that's what i got for. deep fried first before healthy. what about the salad here? - this is a patacon. it's actually a fried plantain on the bottom. so it's a seed plantain. - [natalie] ooo can i cut into that? - [amanda] yeah absolutely. - [natalie] so there's a fried plantain underneath of all this goodness. look at that. - [amanda] it's shredded meat, yeah. lettuce, avocado, banana peppers, cheese. and then we serve it with, this is our cilantro sauce, we're kind of known around town for it. we sell it by the bottle. and that's kind of a mayonnaise cilantro based sauce. - you don't even need
10:27 am
- yeah you definitely don't. - very, very flavorful. wow and what... that is so big i don't even, that could last you for four days. - this is our fish burrito. it's kind of one of our own creations. it's got rice and beans and lettuce, tilapia, enchilada sauce, sour cream and comes with that side of fries. - [natalie] and what do you have on top of it? - [amanda] it's an enchilada sauce and then the sour cream zigzags through there. - wow. okay everything out here is phenomenal. - great. - but if i had to pick one, i'm going with this burrito. - all right. - i've never had a fish burrito. - it's kind of an original but it's very tasty. - obviously latin american food, the menu, what are we gonna find on the menu? - you're gonna find things from all different regions, venezuela, colombia, cuba, we have a great cuban sandwich. you're gonna find all kinds
10:28 am
of lighter fare. you're not gonna find a lot of that heavy, cheesy, saucy things. that you might find at just a plain mexican restaurant. there's a lot of fresh vegetables, and then of course, everything goes great with our cilantro sauce. - and i'm guessing with the recipes, i mean you're getting really authentic food so those chefs are working hard back there. - [amanda] yeah. create some really interesting unique recipes you would find in latin america. - yeah and what's over there? i saw that you have, is that sangria? - yeah we make sangria in house we have both red and white sangria. we serve it by the glass or by the draft. - i love this place. i think i could just stick around here maybe. - yeah. - forget the rest of gahanna, i'm gonna sit here and eat all day long. - stick around for lunch. - lets pack this up, is that okay? - absolutely. we can get you a box. - we're right on the corner of high and town. high and town. - yup. - come check them out, great spot to come, relax. get a little bite to east, get that energy going back up again, so that you can walk around town and explore the rest that
10:29 am
10:30 am
10:31 am
we're here at the most visited and probably famous garden in all of gahanna, and mike, why is that? - well this is one of the first ones that the city of gahanna installed through the efforts of bunny geroux hence the garden is named after
10:32 am
few years ago to her. - we have been hearing about bunny, who is bunny? - she's not a myth she's a real person. bunny is the person who back in the 70's really pushed (mumbles) legislator to make gahanna the herb capital of ohio. she received a grant from the governor's office and was able to establish the ohio herb education center. and so we were able to work with her over the years, and establish gardens through gahanna. - wow. - to be able to continue to just cultivate and try to grow the use of herbs and gahanna was very rich in history when it came to farmland and they even gone around the creeks and so she ran with that and continued to develop it and here we are today. - now we're right by city hall here. has this.. how much has this transformed over time from when she had that vision? - well it's transformed
10:33 am
- okay. - year after year things were changed and walls were added and walkways were added since i've been here. two of these gardens have been added. we're doing some work over in one of the walkways this year. we're gonna extend it out to make accessibility a lot better and see the back side of this garden. we're redoing the medicinal art garden which was here this morning and it's gone now. - so things are always changing? - [mike] always evolving, always changing yes. - [natalie] what all can you see here as far as herbs go? - [mike] well i mean. - [natalie] what are some of the features? - we're still a little early in the year so there you see they're all starting to pop up but you know this was traditionally the medicinal garden with (mumbles) and different plants that were used. you know for medicine purposes. we got some sweet woodruff over here. behind us here we have the culinary herb garden which is where all the traditional herbs that people are more familiar with. your cilantros and your basils, oreganos, lots of mint. so the gardens all kind of have their little theme. that sort of things we're doing this year, is we're gonna put together a master plan 'cause over
10:34 am
and we wanna make sure that we continue to develop and move forward in a structured manner. and so we're gonna try to develop certain areas and change them from use types to more of a micro climate. so we put all the herbs together than want the wet soils and the dry soils. - now, what about, i know obviously as the time of year changes things change but i can only imagine what this looks like once all the flowers bloom. - [mike] yeah this is beautiful here. in a month so so, it's started to green up now. we had a hard winter to we were worried about it a little bit. with a lot of our plants we were kind of worried how they would winter. but it's starting to green up and eventually this'll be just a ceiling of green and the purple wisteria will hang down from it. and it's really beautiful, it's a great place to come out here and walk. it's such a great location too. we have high school kids come over here throughout the fall and the spring and sit and eat their lunch. and enjoy the gardens as well. - [natalie] how beautiful is that. now people probably aren't allowed to pick any of the herbs right? they have to see it here. - no we have programs in the fall where people can come and help us cultivate and
10:35 am
home, cuttings and stuff, and we have programs for that but we ask people not to take them. - well for you now being so closely linked to this and knowing what bunny has done. what does it feel like to know, you know that this city is named this and really has carried on that tradition so well? - [mike] i think it's great, i think it's cool. every city has their little niche and this is what gahanna has and as far as the parks department, we don't look at this garden as anything different than what we do. for us this is just part of our park system and we continue to maintain it to a certain level, and so being a garden, being a formal garden it takes a lot more effort and time and money on our (mumbles) but it's worth it. we had a lot of people come through here last year we had 300 people with tours come through here. the garden to experience it with us and this june we have a group already of 100 plus coming so. - [natalie] i can see why. it is absolutely stunning and i can't even imagine you know just being out here through some of the season and just taking this on. absolutely beautiful. i know this gains a lot of attention as you mentioned
10:36 am
come in here and see it, there is also a home here that has gained international attention for a little bit of a different reason. (light guitar music) - [voiceover] the universal design living laboratory, it's a home that showcases universal design and green building so that people can find all the conveniences in one place. to live in their home for a lifetime. the home has so many features, so much detail. that's what unique when people come here they're gonna see detail. and the detail makes all the difference. as i use a wheelchair for mobility, it was very important and that's the story. the green aspects include the intense effort that went in to making this thing airtight. we have lots of insulation that was built into the home so our energy bills are so small. we also have the passive solar, so our house faces the south.
10:37 am
and the sun is out friend. in the winter heating up the interior of the home, and yet we have six foot over hangs on the entire house to shield the sun from the summer heats. as most of you know, whenever you have parties, where do your guests go? they're here, we can't seem to get them out of the kitchen. and so what we have is marble heights of counter tops in the center island. we have a 40 inch and we have a 30 inch and we have a 35 inch. the 30 inch is just perfect for me for food preparation, and it's a great spot for dining in that you have plenty of knee space underneath. here's a very unique feature of the oven. having a side hinge made all the difference for me. typically an oven has the hinge on the bottom, and that door would be in my way but look at the accessibility so that you have total access to getting food out and putting it back in, with the oven hinged on the side of the door.
10:38 am
are tall as well as people who are seated. one of the features that really gets a lot of attention is the raised dish washer. it's actually 18 inches off the floor, but it makes it so much easier so you don't have to bend down as far, when you're loading and unloading dishes in the dishwasher. the other component in design was i wanted to be able to reach things that are in storage, and our goal was that i would have at least 50% of the storage space reachable from a seated position. we're in the wardrobe, it's the master closet combination laundry room. what it is is an efficient room, it's time efficient. so that you're doing laundry and you're sorting clothes you're packing and unpacking all in one room, instead of moving clothes from one part of the house to another. for accessibility, the clothing rods on the lower level are my height, so those are my clothes and mark being
10:39 am

welcome back to our road trip to gahanna we are taking a timeout, chilling out a little bit and eating some delicious food at 101 beer kitchen. mike, thanks for having us here today. - absolutely. - the food looks fabulous, i'm super excited to eat it. but before we get to the food, i love just the atmosphere in here. - [mike] yeah we tried to create a place that's comfortable for everybody. we have a great kids menu so you can bring kids. great place for mom and dad to get a nice beer and a great, not overly priced meal. - [natalie] what plaza are we in right now? - [mike] this is the stoneridge plaza. - [natalia] stoneridge plaza,
10:43 am
the downtown area. - right, right on the corner of morris and hamilton. - all right and obviously you're known for your beers on top of the food. so we're doing a little pairing today? - yes absolutely. - all right. what'd you have in store for us? - well we do monthly beer dinners. so we take food and beer and pair them. so i did some fun things today. these are our house made pretzels. we are a scratch kitchen, everything is made from scratch. so with the pretzels we garnish them with a little bit of caraway, which is the seed in rye bread. so i wanted to pair a rye beer and this is the two brothers cane and ebel, a nice midwestern beer. - okay. - and i wanted you to be able-- - [natalie] you do that i'm gonna do this. i gotta actually try both right. - yeah exactly. - this might take me a second. what kind of dipping? - that is a beer cheese dip. - oh wow. - ooo look at that. so that is a nice amber rye red they call it. very mild, a little bit
10:44 am
so that's gonna pair very nicely with the pretzels. - i'm gonna taste this. - it's a rough job we have today isn't it? - i tell you my jobs terrible. it's terrible. so is this it's terrible. - right. - it's delicious. (chuckles) it's delicious, okay i'm gonna put that next. - [mike] all right. - [natalie] that is a great pairing. that's good if you're coming in for happy hour or something. - right, yup we do do a nice happy hour from 3 to 7. - or if you want to really delve into a good meal. - yes. - this would probably be the best option. - definitely. this our salmon dish, we take seared faroe island salmon, we serve it with grilled asparagus, a fresh pea sauce, and then there's a grain it's also called farro, spelled a little bit different. with tomato and basil. and what i decided for this one was i wanted to use a nice, sort of a grassy wheat. isn't that good? - mike. oh my god. - [mike] the wheat beer will definitely go well with the green of the peas
10:45 am
in there. - [natalie] that's insane. - [mike] isn't that good? now try that as a pairing with that. - wow. - [mike] great huh? - that's fresh. i think spring, i think summer when i see this pair. - [mike] yup and that's why we did it. the radish to keep it light, and then a nice wheat beer to go with that. - delicious. - it's a great brewery. - all right, this last one. - oh and then lastly. - i think i need to unbutton the button for the next one. - this is one of our signature dishes. shrimp and grits. even people form the south have told us how great our shrimp and grits is. - [natalie] really? - [mike] we do it with andouille sausage, shallots, garlic, lots of fresh herbs and then the cheddar grits underneath. it is really, really good, and wanted to do-- - now go for the whole shrimp right? - [mike] yeah and there's a touch of heat in the andouille and i really like a nice ipa. something with a little bit bigger of a backbone in an ipa, and this is risen by six point. it's pretty hefty with the apv but very, very good.
10:46 am
i pair these two. this has got that richness almost a piney flavor to it. okay and here we go with the drink. that is also really good. - isn't that really good. good hops to that? - yeah really nice hops, a little bit of the piney resiny flavor and i think that's why they named it resin. but the malt backbone again of that ipa helps and the hops help curve the heat of the andouille and just blend in nicely with the creminess of the grits. so this is great. so you have these pairings that people can come and take part in basically. - we do them monthly. we have two locations. one in dublin, this one in gahanna. dublin has been open for a little over two years, and we do them every month there and we're starting over here. very soon with the beer dinners and they can sell out very quickly. - [natalie] so if they can't make it for a pairing i'm sure someone here if they wanna really pair up a good beer with a meal you guys can help them no matter what of day, no matter what's going on. - yeah, our staff is great
10:47 am
they do. they know what beers go with what. so you ask your server or a bartender, or the chef will come out and talk to you if you really want. - [natalie] what, well only because you're the head chef here after all. - that's right. - how many different bottles do you have and you have drafts too. - we have about 80 bottles, or right around there. and then we have 19 taps, well we have 20. one's always for root beer cause we do draft root beer. delicious. and then he 19 road tape and they're really just a great list. we also do sunday brunch, saturday's and sundays. did i say sunday brunch, i meant just brunch saturdays and sundays. - you meant just brunch. okay. and if you don't think that when they put one of these little growlers on your table that you're gonna be drinking more beer. this is how you give your water. - [mike] that's our water server. - [natalie] i love it, and it's delicious water too. can you believe that? on top of everything else. cool place to come and check out. - thank you so much. - will people make this drive down here, i wouldn't pass this up that's for sure. thanks so much for having us here. - appreciate having you. - [natalie] stay tuned for more of our road trip

entertainment epicenter here. - [laurie] it is just gorgeous and it really has become kind of a benchmark for all of the other development that's happening around columbus. - what all is in here? is this about three blocks? - well the creekside district is about three blocks north, about two blocks east. it has restaurants, it has shops, we have an art gallery. of course the herbal education center is here. the beautiful park area, you can come paddle boat in the spring and summer time. - [natalie] it is absolutely gorgeous. so not only can you do shopping and go to these galleries, but you can do some outdoor activities. what is this just a little creek down here. - right. when the weather gets a little bit nicer, today's a gorgeous day so it's hopefully the start of that, but we have paddle boats right down here at the marina and you can actually just take a paddle boat ride all the way down the creek and come back up on the other side of what we're seeing here is a beautiful park area, with big open spaces. a lot of families like to picnic or take their dogs or do
10:52 am
almost transformed this city. - it certainly did, i mean there used to be an old gas station here. - really? - think about that and then you look at this. it's just beautiful. it really has and this is where everybody comes. this is the heart of gahanna right here. - [natalie] so, yes there's so many other things you can do while you're in town. but if you wanted to and you're maybe spending an overnight trip here, you could do an entire day just-- - right here, you don't need to go anywhere else but right here. - just right here. - that's right. - [natalie] what do you i mean you've been here a long time. you've seen this all happen, you've seen it all develop. what do you love about the district here? - [laurie] i love, exactly what you just said. i mean you have everything that you need right here. but look at where you are. you don't feel like you are literally three minutes away from the outer (mumbles) gahanna. you forget where you are. you're in some beautiful, peaceful, relaxation place. where you can just come, sit on a bench, enjoy the sunshine, enjoy some dinner and really it's a great
10:53 am
- and i know you mentioned an art gallery, it's right here. - it is. - i would love to go and check that out. will you point me in the right direction? - you know we just follow this path right down there, it'll lead ya right there. - sounds good. (delightful music) - [voiceover] the lew griffin gallery, we opened in june of last year. and he renovated this beautiful space in downtown gahanna and we're really happy to be part of the gahanna community. wanting to bring in some entertainment and fun to the downtown. i hire the artist in, i hand pick each one. each one has a unique, we want to have a different flare here at the gallery. we just don't want it to be every same old gallery. we handle nothing but originals, fine art. but yet reasonably priced. so that everybody can afford it. and a lot of the artists here are all locals too.
10:54 am
i've been painting for over 40 years and also teach here at the gallery you've got pinot and paint. all you need to do is call me, and we book you a class. they're very personal because it's your own group. friends and family. and you can bring your own beverage, your own snacks and at the end of three hours, you have a finished painting. we have 13 artists at the time and one of them is myself. we have from photography, oil paintings, acrylics, sculptures, stone sculptures from africa. but they're all really unique one of a kind different styles and i think it would be worth a trip down here to check everybody's work out. we have a rotating feature artist. the second friday of every month. so we have a nice artist reception a lot of the local artists that are already exhibiting, they attend the event, and as well as with the featured artists
10:55 am
looking right now at a glass blower bringing in a really good glass blower. so that's an adventure. (delightful music) lew, when he opened this building he really wanted to bring something downtown to gahanna. for like a recreation, a place to come up with something to do downtown in gahanna. and to support the community, and also support the artist. but one great thing about this gallery is that is a non-profit gallery so. after if there's any profits left over, lew is donating them to the children's hospital and also to the homeless and the food banks. we're open during the week and we're open, wednesday, thursday and friday one to seven, and we're open friday and saturdays one to nine. and you can book a class
10:56 am
any one of those evenings. just give me a call. but the best thing is to just come down and walk around, and if you need a new piece for your house, this is the place to come. - just a little reminder for you, the gallery is open wednesday, thursday, friday and saturday by appointment and that art rotates regularly. that about does it for our trip to gahanna. it is so beautiful here isn't it? what i love about being right downtown here is you see the old town, you see what it used to be and then right across the street, the modernization of things and what this city is also turning into. not too big, not too small so just the right size. you're not gonna feel overwhelmed when you come here. and it is again just two hours away from home. i'm natalie herbick and i'll see you on the next new day cleveland.
